Agree, I thought we was excellent in all departments v Chiefs.

(Another credit to Link and his team of coaches: of the core Reds' players for 2011, other than Chambers and perhaps S Fainga'a, v 2010 it's hard to think of a Reds player that has not improved their core skills and/or general playing nous in big games. Some more than others, sure, but the overall improvement is consistently there. And the way young players like Taps, Shipps, Gill etc have come in and played a positive role more or less from the get go, often in big games, is impressive.)

Guy Shepardson rings an alarm bell of doing SFA with the opportunities he's been given.

I honestly don't understand how he's dropped so far out of the picture in so few years (wasn't it in 2007/2008 when both he and Holmes were the Wallabies front rowers?)

You'd like to think so but I don't know. Everybody throws out all these claims about the Wob squad this year but the reality is it will be almost exactly the same as last year.

The first 3 years of a WC cycle are for experimenting, the WC year is for getting the machine you've built running smoothly.

If a player like Holmes can back up his 2011 in 2012 more Wallaby honours will come then.

On Greg Holmes: let's hope he scrummages well at THP against the best scrum in the comp. If he does so he could join the triumvirate of Robinson, Kepu and Slipper for the RWC with Baxter as the standby.

The hurdle to that may be the unfounded (IMO) fascination for Alexander, as a scrummager.

I was appalled as others were at the prop dross we had on show this time last year. Some of those fellows who played for the Wobs and the Oz Baas in 2010 will scrum better with age, but Holmes has inherent scrummaging quality.

But I digress from the match thread.

Completely disagree with this. You do not pick a squad on old Data. If you did none of the selectors would have had any need to go to any Super Rugby game. The Core may not change but the fringes could be vastly different.

Experience suggests that one or two of the worthies in Lee's triumvirate above - and another one or two of the wallabies in waiting in the next tier - are likely to be injured at some stage over the next 4 months. Hands may well be forced, and hopefully they are guided by currentish form.

I'm looking forward to the scrum contest this weekend. Even if it really is brutal for the reds, should be great to watch.

lets just see how he handles the scrum on Saturday first, the Crusaders have made mince of every scrum before them this season(including NSW and ACT), and they seemed to have improved further, so if Holmes can contain the damage then he should be given consideration, but lets save that call until Sunday.

Blackadder saying territory is critical. Reds ranked 1st in Super15 comp for greatest average territory, Crusaders ranked 5th.

Crusaders average 9.9 handling errors per game, 6th highest in comp. Reds average 7.5, lowest in the comp.
