Just watched the replay of the Woodies winning the Cutler Shield. They will give the comp a shake next year, if they can hang onto their ypoung telant.

Why does Shute shield even have this rule? What Shute shield dynasty was the cause and effect… did Randwick put 50+ on Penrith back in the day so they went looking for ways to introduce a even playing field.

I think the rule needs to be dismantled honestly… what happens when we move to a national club competition and top of the table easts continually lose to a Brothers/UQ or wests from Queensland who currently have no points cap system in place so can field the occasional all star lineup with wallabies and all.

are shute shield fans in favour of a points cap?

Think it would disappear if a national competition was in place. All sides would also lose players when club benefactors start poaching guys nationally.

It was seriously needed following Syd Uni who were putting out multiple Super Rugby players in 2nd grade from 2000-2020. They were the Melbourne Rebels.

Are Manly doing the standard late season fade into irrelevance?

Huge scores, poor defences. Lates season blues? Even though the season seems to shrink into 4 months for non finals teams.

Seems like a trend for Manly the past few years. Out of the gates flying then progressively get overrun and bundled out. Past years I thought yeah other sides pick up players but they have Foketi, Thompson-Stringer come back and Ward who got a run for the Tahs. Depending on the Wallabies they might get Gleeson come finals? Although the piss weak wallabies pack might get him more involved there

Yep like sand thru the hourglass Manly will taper off at the end of the season and quietly exit the finals. As a fan its quite nice knowing that it will happen each season. If manly fans dont get their hopes up there is no risk of disappointment. Then we can focus on uni and easts choking.

The way it has worked out - Easts won all Male Grades plus won 1st and 3rd Colts Grades, while Manly finished 6th in many of theirs.

The stars have aligned for Easts and Manly such that 5 out of the 6 games at Woollahra on Saturday involve those two teams.

Done that

Depends which clubs fans you ask. Obviously the intention is to try and address an uneven playing field. Clearly a few clubs have an ongoing financial & access to best players advantage season after season. The cap is an attempt to make the competition more competitive & less predictable, particularly for the usual clubs which fill the bottom half on the ladder every year. At the start of each year, most followers of the Shute Shield would pretty much select the same clubs to be in the end of season playoffs. Boring. There is evidence that some clubs are struggling now, with difficulty filling the required number of teams, which was supposedly a requirement to participate in the competition.Clearly a requirement which is seemingly & conveniently not being applied. The cap has not been successful in addressing the issue of the inequality between clubs, but to remove it would surely ultimately hasten the demise of some of the lowest placed clubs. Maybe that's what some people want?

heard they are scrapping the whole system for 2025, no player caps at all. open slather in a dog eat dog world, survival of the fittest. which to me means the rich clubs will win.
