My mind keeps going back to the revelation by Cheika around about the time of the test selection that they don't spend much time on scrums at training.
This showed - Paddy Ryan has been a lot more convincing after spending the test window break in camp getting scrum schooled.
I'd be putting it in on the scrums & lineouts this week.

Simmons got penalised for the exact same tackle in the 3rd Test don't know why he seemed dumbfounded by it.

I think JackPot will start and this will immediately improve the lineout (along with a bit of time at training).

Like other posters suggested the reds forwards actually put in a very spirited performance and have one of the best lineouts in the comp. It was promising that the tahs lineout improved alot in the last 30. Hoiles actualy got a steal and chapman for douglas provide more speed of movement. Hooper actually missed a lift in one of the earlier line outs as did big willie.

They will have every reason to be a bit crisper in a fortnight.

On a side note fuck it was dissapointing to see simmons penalised for that tackle on TPN and that second yellow card was a disgrace. I wouldnt have carded kepu eithier fuck me its not soccer

I thought the Simmons penalty was harsh as noted above but didn't see the yellow fully. Was it worse than the hooper one they reviewed? I thought that was a joke. Good hit. Commentators said it was late but anything looks late in slow mo.

beale jumped just before contact and he just did a standard low tackle.

Apparently it was reckless. I think a person with an ounce of common sense would have said jumping into contact was reckless.

And all the stopping to look at replays made that game slower than test cricket for gods sake. Either have some confidence in your ability to officiate or watch the bloody game closer Sir.

I'm actually 'happy' enough with simmons penalty. It was clearly not a tackle. Put it this way, in intent how is it any different than a trip? He simply did not use his foot (as in trip). He just scythed the other blokes legs, did not use his arms (tho that was excused by the commentators).

A few here are justifiably critical of the reds, but am I the only one who was not at all convinced by the tahs? It is a real weird feeling to have when you look at the final score I must admit.

Definately werent as sharp as they have been in attack/ lineout issues but premierships are won on defence and keeping the reds out multiple times from 5m lineouts and the line speed in defence was convincing enough for a game that didnt mean to much aside from getting one up on an old foe

Good win, but in a lot of ways that was one of the worst performances the 'Tahs have put in for quite a while... The set-piece truly was a shambles and we were pretty badly exposed at the breakdown in the first half on a number of occasions.

If it weren't for Qld's in ability to execute basic catch and pass skills, we could have been in a much tighter contest.

That said, when the backline got moving they truly were sublime. The try of the night was definitely the one Beale set-up with his classy cross field kick. I also thought Naiyaravoro played pretty well with his first full half, running hard and helping finish off that try with a great run and offload.

Still, very nervous about our first home semi - going to be a lot tougher.

Congrats to the Tahs.

My view:
1. Qld forwards were dominant at set piece. There could have easily been several scrum penalties in their favour but this ref did not award them.
2. Skelton was shown up a bit. Slipper all over him. It will be interesting in time to see how long a big unit like Skelton keeps playing. Now players are understanding how to shut him down. Belt him and then belt him again and again. Am sure the AB's and saffas will do just that and a lot of his effectiveness will disappear.
3. Kurtley was immense AND without Folau
4. JJ should be playing Premier grade only (if that) - he was a replacement who got replaced !!!!
5. Kerevi must have read his own press from the great game last week. He was woeful last night
6. The forwards did what they were aiming to do. Dominated their opposition.
7. Shame about injuries to Lucas, Taps and Daley. Lucas is a tough little bloke who played last night with 2 cracked ribs (from MMM the week before).

NOTE: Fucking hard to win a game at this level when 15 men play 8. The Reds had 8 piggies doing their job and the other 7 should have stayed in the sheds. Interesting RG said he wanted 6 new backs. Fuck, maybe he is right.

Great crowd that came out to support the boys, particularly gratifying in light of a tough season. Am looking forward to the new roster that will be announced (sometime)

I disagree.

Great line out. Did we still 4 of there's also? The scrum was strong. The forwards were also strong in tight and also won a fair few pilfers. Forwards put on some big hits. Seemed to have reasonable possession and must have been close of superior in territory.

Backs constantly threw passes behind the man, and I won't excuse a new flyhalf. It's a basic skill. Of we lacked direction or ability to spread the ball wide enough from 10 that would be understandable. In addition there was no cohesion.

Despite the forward set piece dominance and parity around the ground we struggled to compete due to skills (though our forwards skill and passing was good for forwards) and lack of ability to create anything.

It could have been a lot different without the injury toll. Quade hitting the 13 (not sure of the spelling) could have done some damage. And we got towelled up in the set piece. It says something that the Reds sent out Daley who is a poor scrummager yet were still able to pressure the Tahs scrum. Robinson seems to be a spent force in the last few games. Hopefully he is saving a big one for the finals.

I waited until this morning to post and I'm glad I did. My thoughts on last nights game.

Reds:
Set piece and forwards in general were great.
Backs were not. But not that surprising since losing our 10 & 12 very early and the fact that they've been average at best all year. Taps has consistently been one of our top backs and would have had a big role to play last night with so many rooks on the pitch.

Tahs:
Here goes. WTF is the go with hair pulling? Seriously? Not just Kepu put Palu came in late in the same incident and gave Beaus hair a solid yank?
What was the go with Hooper giving Gill a few gut punches after the whistle? He wouldn't care but he's stock ha dropped big time with me. Not the sort of conduct you expect from your wallaby captain. Also that's the sort of stupid shit that should it get cited after the match could see him sitting out for the playoffs. Dickhead move both him and Kepu.
Skelton is great at the rucks but rarely legal. He hits 9/10 rucks with his arm tucked to his side and shoulder first. If someone brings that to a refs attention he will get pinged every time and some of them would be good enough for a YC.
The Simmons 'tackle' was dangerous but I loved the irony that it was on TPN who has built a name on this type of tackle. Was surprised he didn't get YC'd.
The Johson YC was outrageous. That incident was dangerous but it was 100% on Kurtley for jumping into and almost over the tackle. Play on for mine but if they needed to penalise anyone for dangerous play then Kurtley was the man. Hence play on for mine.

Tahs will want to sharpen up in the next fortnight. That was a good lesson for them. Don't get sucked into the crap that the opposition is trying on. If you want to win the championship you must be 100% focused on your own work. Don't get drawn into the shit you can't control. If the do what they did last night in the next two games it will e game over.

Kepu's reaction was poor but a bit understandable after Beau hit him late. The person who tugged in his hair from behind (as well as being gutless) and Palu's later hair pull were shit. If I was a ref I would be warning about yellow cards after the first hair pull.

Hooper's punches looked bad but his back was to the camera so we didn't see any land and he and Gill were pretty chummy after the match. Maybe there was something else going on as a if it was a joke. If it was a set of punches then, yeah, poor form from the Wallaby captain.

That sort of stupid niggle just shits me to tears.

Just to jump on the bandwagon:

I fucking hate players stretching out their arms all the time to intimidate the Ref to award a penalty. Mowen and the Brums do it heaps but Hooper last night as well.

If I was a ref I'd penalise the pricks every time. Twice and get a yellow.

There is a Ref and 2 x assistants. They are supposed to catch the infringements.

Consistency - Sanzar should cite if there was illegal play (on current standards) whether or not dealt with on the night by the Referee. Rub him out.

To me, its past a joke. This is rugby, a little bit of rough stuff, a little bit of retaliation, get square and all that - even a little tug on the hair.

Teaspoon, desertspoon or a bucket of cement should do the trick

I thought those 'punches' were a joke as I'm sure they're mates.

They looked to have a laugh after it actually. Clearly a bit of a gee up.

I imagine the Beau hair pulling was due to their closeness off the pitch. Beau and Cliffy go back to the Rats don't they?

If Kepu doesn't like getting hit he shouldn't hang around the rucks because Beau just came in for a perfectly legal clean out it looked like.
