Reds v Wales, Suncorp Stadium - 19/7

I liked that halfback - my kids called him Temu Tate because of the hair resemblance.
They went to the same school so Werchon really is a mini Tate.

He just needs to sort out the dummy spit when calls go against us. There were a few times where he kicked the ball away or threw it on the ground where I thought he risked getting pinged further

Nothing worse than any other frustrated halfback in my eyes.

Be interesting to see whether he's the preferred #21 next year - I reckon he's done enough to leap Kalani.

We have a pretty busy offseason, let's see how they go. It was fabulous last night but just 1 game.
It was a good atmosphere at the stadium and agree that JOC (James O'Connor) (James O'Connor) looked good, his passing and running (not to mention the goal kicking) was very good. I liked that halfback - my kids called him Temu Tate because of the hair resemblance.

Love it :D

Very impressed with Brial. Plays similar to Cale but with the extra 5kg or so that many think Charlie is missing.

JOC (James O'Connor) had an excellent game. Added variety to the Reds play from the No 10 spot and didn't throw a long, forward pass to his outside backs all game. Also, I reckon he scored a legitimate try. Lost control on the way to the ground but forced it with his body simultaneously with it hitting the ground. A try every time in my book. But really the result and scoreline was secondary to the opportunity this game provided to the players.

I should've noted that I thought his showings throughout the season were, for the most part, a step-up too - particularly in comparison to Kalani's second half of the season.

You can't use the ground to regain possession, like a cricket catch.

So he lost possession and it hit the ground before he caught it. Definition of a knock-on
Knock-on: When a player loses possession of the ball and it goes forward, or when a player hits the ball forward with the hand or arm, or when the ball hits the hand or arm and goes forward, and the ball touches the ground or another player before the original player can catch it

My point is that I thought he forced it simultaneously with the ball touching the ground. Certainly, if the ball hit the ground beforehand it would be a knock on but I don’t think that was the case.

Thought Uru probably did enough to earn a spot in the Wallabies squad proper. He was immense. Particularly if Wright is out.
The one thing counting against him there is that if Wright is out injured Schmidt may want to bring in another option as backup 7.

I'd have Uru ahead of Gleeson in a heartbeat though. Leota's fitness is probably a factor there too, but with another match against Tonga next week Uru gets another chance to push his credentials.

I’ll add… wearing a number in your back doesn’t mean you played the role.

Which happens regularly in the back-row.

Wilson did you rate Uru's efforts at 7 for the Aussie Barbarians last year?
I thought he played well, but I don't think it was as much as a 7 as it was as a generic backrow, or that he's a realistic option at 7 in test matches. At least i wouldn't be running him (or T.Hooper/Gleeson) there without significant changes to our gameplan.

I do think we're about to see out and out fetcher 7s have a period of prominence again, particularly those who with pace and excellent timing - the banning of the crocodile roll (and the resultant increased focus on the already illegal neck roll) makes it much harder to shift players that win the race to the ball without giving away a penalty. I'd be making sure to run someone who fits that bill (ideally at 7) in every game, at least while there is a season or two adjustment period and easy penalties to be won. That said, I was very much an on ball backrower in my playing days, and I definitely have some bias for the role as a result.

Well have to say fellas, just watched game, pretty entertaining, and good to see. I have to say the young 9 for Reds caught my eye a bit, looked not bad.
But anyway certainly good for the game to see a cracking match in front of a good (I thought) crowd.

I was sitting near the Reds tryline in the 2nd half and Werchon was very active in defence, made some good tackles on big guys

It was a good crowd Dan, and a real buzz going into the ground with a lot of young kids in the crowd. Well played by both teams - no shots at goal for penalties, so lots of ball in hand play. I hadn't been to a Reds game for years (Brad era) and really enjoyed it so family talking about going more often next season.

Interesting to see Channel 9 are broadcasting this game on Friday night, but they’re doing it on delay on the primary channel following the NRL, rather then live on another channel like Gem
I wonder what sort of ratings they were expecting and got here. I doubt it would've been much, starting at 10:40 on a Friday night, but it could be an avenue to getting a bit more FTA exposure each week for super rugby. Having a Friday night game replayed each week on Nine after the NRL could help draw some eyeballs back in over time.

Hey so for people who know wtf is going on in a maul I have a question.

You aren't allowed to change your 'bind' in a maul, I believe. But you are allowed to 'come through the middle' and tackle the ball carrier. How is is this possible without changing your bind?

Must admit I went with not the highest expectations and was very pleasantly surprised.. Great game, great atmosphere, and also great to be allowed on the pitch at the end. Players hung around and were generous with photos and autographs, JTA is a legend!
