They have a formal relationship with Nudgee - similar to the Roosters/Scots College one. Identified school age students get brought in to board/play rugby but also be in the league academy.

Most their feeder teams are in regional areas.

I don't think it has as big an impact as you might think. Dolphins have landed in an NRL area that was not well served by the Broncos. It's not really a rugby area either. NRL gets a boost with the history of it and perhaps there is a missed opportunity for rugby.

But no real direct challenge to rugby even at a club level, let alone the Reds.

Agree with all of that, but I do think there is more than some peripheral competition for bums in seats whilst they’re playing half their home games out of Suncorp.

The reality is that going to a game of footy is a proper outing these days, and people want to spend their money on something they’ll enjoy. There is a novelty to the Dolphins at the moment, especially with them winning, having Wayne around etc. I saw a lot of groups of my mates who are rusted on rugby blokes who attended the Fins game and walked out sporting the Fin Head hats and having a great time.

The best thing the Reds could have done on the weekend was chuck 70+ points on and keep themselves relevant. It’ll be interesting to see the crowds between Broncos/Fins/Reds this year.

Yeh, there is a reason the marketing gurus at the Dolphins dropped Redcliffe from their official NRL team name, and why the entire Broncos 2023 campaign is centred around being ‘the heart of Brisbane’.

As far as footy teams based in Brisbane are concerned, there should be some extra alarm bells if these guys start building momentum.

Reds have out paced the Broncos on attendance on occasion, but no it's not a trend. I wouldn't describe the Brisbane rugby scene as anything like the Sydney scene, SRU and Shute Shield are a definite one-off.

In NRL Sydney has a stack of teams, Brisbane has the Broncos so if you are into League you are into the Broncos. And that support is everywhere. Now we have the Dolphins. Are there any rugby schools in Moreton? Not sure, can't think of any. Any Premier grade clubs? No. But they'd go to Norths or GPS I guess.

Yeah, also in those days Reds crowd used to be bigger. Not only Reds, rugby crowd used to be bigger. It's like the Storm/Rebels discussion in Melbourne. Most of Storm fans are casuals getting on the bandwagon but you need that kind of people. I bet many Leaguies supported Reds in 2011 season when Reds crowds were HUGE

No, there really isn't a Sydney parallel for this, it's a very different setup.

I mean, a new NRL club in Greater Western Sydney do not affect Waratahs crowds directly cause that people don't follow rugby. Most of them are immigrants from countries without rugby tradition.

It was said, but not by me. Either way it's a stretch to call it similar, aside from the fact that it's an oversimplified hypothetical. I'm really not sure what point you're trying to make here.

It sold out at 7000. Pretty sure getting 30 000 to suncorp explains that.

Nearly half the home games played at Suncorp, and a few at Sunny Coast stadium as well.

People who dismiss them as an eventual competitor in our grassroots channels are naive.

For those of us over mid 40s how much of an impact have the Broncos had on Rugby in the state?

I was 8 when they launched in 88 so both were always a part of my childhood (always preferred rugby though & only watch origin now).

Sure I've seen a steady decline in rugby over the last 20 years but I wonder if that's just sport in general that's on the decline - rugby had a smaller following to start with so we've noticed it more .....

I think it's the tradition of rugby that's breaking it. We see more schools popping up as the population grows but I don't know of many more rugby schools.

My theory is this: The immigrants map in Australia has changed. At the verge of 19th century most of the immigrants came from Europe, especially England, Wales, UK, countries with rugby tradition so they created British schools with british traditions like rugby and cricket. Nowadays most of the immigrants don't come from UK. Many comes from Asia, Americas and even Africa, so they bring their traditions and rugby is not one of those.

The new rugby supporters come from New Zealand and Pacific Islands. Most of the Kiwis stick to their local Super Rugby franchises and the NRL is attracting many Islanders and some Kiwis.

At the same time AFL, NRL and soccer have grown exponentially
