Reds 2023

For those of us over mid 40s how much of an impact have the Broncos had on Rugby in the state?

I can't quantify any of this, so these are my opinions from my own little bubble. I personally don't feel like juniors numbers in my area (Brisbane Northside) are impacted too strongly in terms of getting players into the game of rugby instead of league.

But once the players are maturing and making their own decisions, I know of a number who've made the choice to play league over rugby at a club level.

My kids aren't old enough to be in that position yet, but I have heard there has been a decent swing in the private schools of students wanting to play league, so much that they've actually brought it in as a term sport.

It's interesting because if we talk strictly about the professional teams in Brisbane, arguably the Reds have been more successful recently than the Broncos. Yet that swing has still happened. That comes down to marketing and funding at a professional competition level, where the NRL simply outclasses rugby significantly.

People who dismiss them as an eventual competitor in our grassroots channels are naive.

Outspends

there’s nothing in league that’s more “classy” then rugby

Imagine hearing your local team gets the nod to be in the NRL and you have double your home games an hour away.
That's not too much. Most of Rabbitohs supporters usually travel something like 30 min to Homebush if they live in Redfern. If they live in Maroubra or Little Bay like many of them, they have to drive 40 min and more than an hour by train/bus

When Tahs played in Parramatta I lived in Manly and used to travel more than an hour to attend the games

I'm sure Moreton Bay Council is stoked they pumped millions into the redevelopment of the stadium for a team that wants to distance themselves from Redcliffe, literally and metaphorically, as much as possible.
Is Redcliffe a bad word? Like Blacktown in Sydney. From an outsider perspective

It depends on the quality of public transport.

It takes me around 30 minutes to get to Suncorp by train, to get to Redcliffe Stadium by public transport would be 2 hours 15 minutes.

Crowds could soon return to a newly redeveloped Ballymore, with Brisbane Roar confirming it is considering a switch to the stadium in a return to its namesake city.

But Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said any move to the stadium in the residential suburb would come with major transport challenges.

Brisbane public transport is worse than Sydney?

What role would Thorn take under Eddie? Set piece? Other forwards stuff? Dunno if Brad is the best bloke for any specialist role.

Yeh I am not sure I agree with him being a Wallaby assistant. If that was definitely an option I imagine it would be set piece or breakdown specialist.

The idea I like most would be him keeping on as Director of Pathways or Talent Acquistion type role for RA. He's got a good eye for bringing the right blokes through the systems, blooding them at the right time professionally and turning them into Wallabies. Obviously some question marks about progression down the track but he wouldn't be responsible for the continued development.

With 7000 seats Im not certain they believed the team would play completely there...

The upgrade took it to 9400 seats with 10k capacity.

No doubt there were understandings and agreements to play elsewhere, but I'm not sure playing less than 30% of 'home' games at the actual home ground was expected.

I don't think it has as big an impact as you might think. Dolphins have landed in an NRL area that was not well served by the Broncos. It's not really a rugby area either. NRL gets a boost with the history of it and perhaps there is a missed opportunity for rugby.

But no real direct challenge to rugby even at a club level, let alone the Reds.
Agree.
I have said it for years that club rugby in Brisbane needs to expand its geographic footprint.
If you take out Bond and Sunnybank the rest are in a12 KM radius of the CBD.
Growth areas like Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Morayfield/Caboolture, Beenleigh/Ormeau and Lockyer valley/Toowoomba there are huge populations that could be harnessed.

Sydney Shute Shield has 12 team comp so maybe QRU could look at 10 teams then 12 teams in the future. Some sort of plan should be drawn up like when Sunnybank was moved into the QPR.
