Reds 2019

Eadie has to be (by a fair margin) the best young specialist winger in QLD 1st grade. I think he is 19? The kid scored 12 tries in 11 games for UQ. He has played rep for QLD and Australia and every possible junior level (from a quick search). I reckon he is worth a punt on developing further, the others mentioned have already been a part of professional environment at some stage of their career.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind seeing Jock Campbell get a crack at an outside back spot either. Has been strong this NRC.

I understand your point, but are we signing him because he is young? or because he is the best genuine winger?

I personally think these players in premier rugby are much better players and more experienced (But perhaps don't have age on their side for some of them):
Jock Campbell (UQ)
Veresa Mataitini (Norths)
Emori Waqavulagi (Souths)
Alex Gibbon (Brothers)
Joey Fittock (Bond)

I just can't help but feel Will Eadie is JJ Taulagi all over again. Hope I am proved wrong

No arguments here on that list. All quality. Although I believe Waqavulagi has international caps for Fiji or Sri Lanka (?) 7's so would have to be the international signing.

I hope they aren't signing Eadie based on age. Jock Campbell is 23, and Mataitini is 20, Fittock is 22. Surely they aren't too old for a crack.

All I can think of is that Thorn coached Eadie in QLD U20's and wants to explore that further. His speed and finishing factor would be huge I'd say, they are harder to coach. But with the right coaching defence can be cleaned up pretty well.

Lets all just hope QC (Quade Cooper) s in Rebels gear next year which alleviate some of the "$ on the sideline" conversation.

Out of curiosity - who are the Rebels paying? Is it a case of Rebels paying Reds who he is contracted to and then the Reds give him a slice of that to convince him to go?
QC (Quade Cooper) must pocket some (more) coin - otherwise whats in it for him?
I assume he would stand to make a lot more money if he makes it back into the Wallabies.

I was never a massive fan of JJ because he was a horrible defender

But the kid (if we can still call him that) has come of age playing abroad and most recently being one of the best talents on the Mitre 10 Cup premiership contenders Hawkes Bay magpies.

there is no way Matalini is 20. Add 10 to that I reckon.

Campbell has really impressed in the NRC and I think is worthy of a shot before Eadie (assuming we can keep Eadie on an Academy contract or some sorts).

You're probably right he's closer to 30, Reg. I was just going off his profile on rugby.com.au that says he was born in 1998. When I posted I didn't read further but I now see it says he played REDS A in 2013, which would mean if I was right he would have been 15... My bad.

I agree with the points made about Jock. I'd like to see him have a crack too.

Talking about this hulking 108kg flanker...Pretty sure Schatz, Quirk, Browning and most recently Hewat were the same as teenagers and didn't work great for them at the Reds in the end.

Assume you are referring to Wilson? I’m more worried that ASY (Angus Scott-Young) goes down that route. They’re ain’t a lot to his game other than being a hard worker. Wilson has some real skill about him and I hope he recaptured his offload game as I think it could be a real point of difference.

So Rebels pay Reds a release fee and QC (Quade Cooper) Match payments.

I imagine the release fee is around $5k - given the other offers going around.

BB why do you assume there is a release fee paid by the Rebels to the Reds? If there is one, the Rebels would probably just discount the proportion of Quade's fee they are willing to pay to compensate, and the Reds would then have to make up the difference to Quade. Net effect - nil.

Assuming Quade's contract is currently for $800,000 per year. The Rebels have offered to pay him some proportion, say $400,000 for 2019 and the Reds will fork out the balance, in this example the other $400,000. At least, that's the way I understand the arrangements.

Rumours were $600k/year plus appearances for the Wallabies which at the moment are nil. Then take the RA/ARU top up contribution. Maybe $200k? Rebels simply place a value on their 10 keeping in mind the salary cap. The Reds are not going to be saving big money here (though clearly every dollar helps) and the Rebels pick up a good deal. Reds need to clear Hunt and Slipper as well.

I'd imagine that Quade's negotiations are more around what happens after 2019, which you can imagine might be more involved and slow the deal down.

To fill some dead posting time, I wonder how long Pocock has got left in the national setup?

Not that it's relevant to Gill, who won't be at the Reds anyway. However Pocock's head is getting ripped off every test and the guy will be 35 y.o. by France 2023. You'd have to think he'd be gone before that milestone - with a player like Naisarani, or similar, a chance.

Hooper will be there, though. Six million reasons to guarantee it.

Not the smartest. Yeah. The duration moreso than the headline amount in itself.

But that was one for another day.

Release fee probably wrong EPL type jargon. However would Quade play for the same money that he is guaranteed to get playing for Souths? The only driver is a shot at Wallabies, which maybe he thinks is a realistic chance.

I can't see Quade (and Khoder) shifting south without pocketing more coin.
