If only we had a high profile player who the crowds love to watch and would probably draw more punters to home games and sell jerseys, hats, memberships et al waiting in the wings wanting to play. That would boost revenue wouldn't it?

It's just this silly recurring dream I have

Talk about deifying. Quade Cooper is the answer to all our ailing? I guess those NRC games were pulling 30,000 crowds.

Don't recall the crowds being particularly big when he played his last season for the Reds.

Reg - my statement was about boosting revenue, not the answer to "all our ailing" so please stick to the issue at hand and not try and spin the discussion off into an orbit that is of your choosing.

As for the NRC, I doubt even Jesus Christ playing 10 could draw a crowd to watch it.

What I do know is however is that club rugby received a sizable boost in crowds when Cooper was playing. Additionally, there was increased coverage in the media which helped drive further interest.

As for crowds when QC (Quade Cooper) last played Super rugby, no they were terrible, and have been getting worse since so not sure what conclusion you can draw from that.

I believe more people would be inclined to watch the Reds play if Cooper was playing, hence an increase in revenue as I stated.

Liam Gill is an excellent footballer, a fine man and credit to his family, school, club and country. He was lied to about the coaching structure at the Reds with The QRU re appointing Richard Graham, the Aru favoured top up contracts to Hooper and Pocock over him. Rightly or wrongly ( I’m on the side of wrong) those decisions were made by others and he left and went to France.

FYI this is not speculation, this is a good summary of the events that finished with Gilly signing in France. I can't remember who was doing administration and contracting back then. If it was Cordingley then (is here still doing this now?) from what I've heard that could be a fair barrier to repatriating Liam.

The situation as it stands is that his options for an Aus return in 2019 are the Force (on Twiggy's dime) or the Reds (if they can magically free up some money or he takes a whopping pay cut). If the numbers don't add up then that's fine, but it makes little sense for Thorn to flat out not want him. Gill's playing ability and love for QLD (and leadership qualities) are as good as anyone we could possibly look at. To not even try repatriate him would be another fine example of Thorn's inconsistently applied puritanism allowed to run wild by an unfathomably weak and incompetent QRU management.

So how many spots are left for a couple of experienced players??

do the Reds not want any experienced players, can the genuinely not afford any, or is it a case that they can't attract any due to coach/management?

either way this team is looking waaayyyy too underdone... remember this is a organisation desperate to get some bums on seats, and only wins are going to get that.

I was going to do some analysis of average number of Super Rugby caps outside of Higs and CFS, but the Reds cant even be bothered posting squad details these days.

Remember that time when he fed the masses with some left over fish and bread?

Fact is Reds have stuff all money. Fact is they also have 4 exceptional 7 options coming through. These are considerations for a Head Coach when building his program.

None of those young boys (Wright, Kibble, McReight, Wallis being the ones I can think of) are as good as Gilly was at that age and obviously none have proved they have the ability to step up to Super Rugby or beyond. Money may be a valid reason but preferring to bank on any (or ALL) of those fellas over Liam would (in isolation) be an extremely poor one.

Great to see the Reds Kindergarten having all places filled.

Yeah those are such ridiculous signings. Great young players but they should be so firmly parked in the re-launched academy.

Addit; I didn't actually see in the release specific mention of if the contracts are full squad spots or something else. Hopefully it's the latter.

Lets all just hope QC (Quade Cooper) s in Rebels gear next year which alleviate some of the "$ on the sideline" conversation.

Out of curiosity - who are the Rebels paying? Is it a case of Rebels paying Reds who he is contracted to and then the Reds give him a slice of that to convince him to go?
QC (Quade Cooper) must pocket some (more) coin - otherwise whats in it for him?

pretty sure its a case of QC (Quade Cooper)'s wage being match - Rebels foot some of the bill and Reds top it up so that QC (Quade Cooper) isnt out of pocket.

Harry Wilson I understand, he is a great talent that will benefit from training in a full time environment. Probably not ready for super rugby til 2020, but im happy with that signing.

Efi Ma'afu has been apart of every pathway program since 16, so its not surprising the reds have signed him (Seems to be the way it goes these days). However, his set piece is not up to scratch and I've been told he couldn't even crack his club starting side at the end of this season (To be fair he did come back from 20's but still).

Will Eadie is the one that baffles me. How does he get signed by the reds when he can't even get an NRC game? Are they justifying it because of his speed? (he is exceptionally quick) because his defence is a massive worry. I can't help but feel there are better and more experienced wingers in premier rugby. Are we signing him so know one else does? I really hope this is solely an academy contract

Yep, the Reds will essentially be paying for Quade to play at the Rebels if he signs there...........

Just like Slipper is being partly paid by the Reds to play at the Brumbies over the next two years.

Match payments. Drive up his next contract value. Put a case up for Wallaby selection

So Rebels pay Reds a release fee and QC (Quade Cooper) Match payments.

I imagine the release fee is around $5k - given the other offers going around.

Talking about this hulking 108kg flanker.....Pretty sure Schatz, Quirk, Browning and most recently Hewat were the same as teenagers and didn't work great for them at the Reds in the end.

The wingers that Brisbane City have selected the past few weeks have probably been picked because they are more experienced and developed but the won't be apart of the Reds next year for whatever reason - Ngamanu to Souths Logan League, Con Foley playing in the USA, and Jaye Thompson going back to NZ (So I've have heard).

Eadie has to be (by a fair margin) the best young specialist winger in QLD 1st grade. I think he is 19? The kid scored 12 tries in 11 games for UQ. He has played rep for QLD and Australia and every possible junior level (from a quick search). I reckon he is worth a punt on developing further, the others mentioned have already been a part of professional environment at some stage of their career.

*edit. Hopefully Peter Ryan can have a positive impact on his defence (and the rest of the Reds for that matter!!!)

Having said that, I wouldn't mind seeing Jock Campbell get a crack at an outside back spot either. Has been strong this NRC.
