Well it looks like the Reds favorite Son is being relegated to the pine for the 3rd Bledisloe, Chieka is making a mistake moving Foley to 10 he should be moved to the bench.

Players really play overseas for one of 2 reasons, no more, no less.

1. Money, money and more money.

2. They can't get a run at Super rugby and want to play at a higher level (and get paid as well)

But if they want to return to play Super rugby the onus is on them to be able to manage their foorball to maintain a certain level of performance so maybe contracts in the first year of return should be performance based.

3rd reason is the injury prone players seem to have better rums over there...e.g. MMM.

Yes and no.

There's no value for the team that has signed them to push a player who needs a break and then have them injured for the season.

The Super Rugby team could try offering a different style of contract but it may mean they don't sign the player they want.

It may mean their worth on their return is less and players (themselves) need to take that into account when they sign lucrative overseas deals.

JacPot was pretty ordinary in 2015 at the Tahs, the year-round rugby finally caught up with him.

But it's not year round, a player like Potgeiter is just having his off-season at a different point in the year, there is a 3 week break in the June test window and a 2 month break between the end of Super Rugby and start of the Top League. The amount of rugby is comparable to a Super Rugby player who rolls straight into the SS/QPR and then NRC.

The issue is when you have guys like Foley or Folau, and they are filling those 'breaks' with test matches. That's why I think it's a case by case basis and you can't implement hard and fast rules on the issue.

Potgieter has been doing it for a few years now though and then sustained an injury early in 2016 and couldn't play a Super Rugby game.

Obviously correlation doesn't equal causation but his impact tailed off from an outstanding 2014 and then he got injured.

Perhaps the back to back seasons caught up with him too.

RE: Japan based players getting straight into it. The reality is we aren't going to have our strongest 15 on the paddock every week. So it's good for the likes of Smith, Higgers etc to sit on the pine every now and then to keep on top of their bodies. If they need a week off for the longevity of our/their season, then that's what they need to do. It also provides a good opportunity to create depth in certain positions and faith in players that they can do the job. I don't know, easy being a "couch coach" isn't it

I can kind of understand why given QC (Quade Cooper)'s issues in the past in NZ but he is still a better option and should start.

By the same logic that the NRC was enough to overcome Stile's terrible record at all other levels, how on earth could you appoint Gilmore given what he has done with Country

That said, if it does happen, was kinda telegraphed when the took the HC responsibilities off him.

Building a coaching staff of those who only have success when they have disproportionate talent over opposition and the best-recruited roster since the Tahs in 2014. Champions or bust!

On a different but related topic, not sure if it's been much noticed that the peerless ex-Reds attack coach under RG - Steve Meehan - has been dumped by Toulon as backs coach after one season. Mike Ford took over that role and was soon promoted to HC. Meehan has been transferred to 'video work' for Toulon.

Redshappy, I know you love your conspiracy theory of organisational malaise.

But there's another potential reason.

Super Rugby Assistant Coaches don't get paid a lot. Take a look at Sean Hedger leaving the Rebels to coach Bond Uni.

I doubt you are attracting any overseas based options to come back as an assistant. In fact most made their name as an assistant and that level and moved on for money seemingly.

That basically leaves you up and comers unless you are willing to pay over market rates and I don't think we are at all in a financial position to do so. And then for any interstate up and comers, they need to be willing to relocate to Brisbane for the job.

To me it's a fucking dud team. But I'm not certain the the Reds ignored a bunch of interested parties to pick up local guys. I think it's more likely they were all that were interested.
