You people are having a laugh, I suppose Australia's newest governor general's judgement is questionable and opinion is worthless because he too was a board member during those years..

Eales replaced Cosgrove.
But in any event,if he was still on the Board then yeah,he would also be liable to criticism. What people do,or have done outside of their Board role is irrelevant, when evaluating their performance as a Board member.

Unless you believe losing $26M and 90% of their net assets in two years was such a good result, the outgoing CEO deserved a performance bonus of nearly $1M(which was a quarter of their net worth!)

Your a fool if you think the problems faced by the ARU In 2010-2013 wasn't as a result of the business conditions set in the years prior.

To discredit someone's opinion without knowing their stance or actions taken on a subject is drawing a long bow.

Everyone involved is liable for criticism, that doesn't mean his input and opinion on wider rugby topics is worthless, which is the actual point of this conversation.

Was reading in the Oz today where a reporter was talking to Carmichael and how committed he is to the status quo and believe the Reds need to recruit better. Woody will be there next year, might be they shake up the assistants, they'll definitely recruit some monsters. We have been relying on young kids too much in recent years and the step up is massive for them.

I can't get there tonight, bbq with friends is taking priority. Let's go reds. Turn it round and give us a taste of 2015.

No one has commented on his performance at Thiess,or IQ or wherever else he is a director.
Just the ARU,where he joined in 2010 when they made $7M and were worth $29M.
They have lost $26M and 90% of their net worth in the following 2 years.
God knows what happened in 2013, because that result is yet to be admitted to.
I understand the original criticism, was that Eales and the board were remiss in paying JON $2.3M under these circumstances, which I find to be a reasonable assessment.

For the zillionth time, the ARU board would have paid JON out according to the terms of his contract. They would not have paid him a cent more than he was legally entitled to. Let us give them credit for not being absolute imbeciles.

Whatever blame accrues for the size of his payout should be directed to the board members who were there at the time that he was being recruited.

As for the deterioration of the ARU finances, it is pretty weird to blame the current directors for a situation (a) the seeds for which were sown years earlier, and (b) the causes of which were mostly out of their control. Namely, the very severe business recession, the 2011 RWC and its impact on revenues, and the dire state of the popularity of the game, following on from the dreadful 2007 RWC. The following for the game in Australia has been in decline for years, partly because competiting sports are more popular, and there is not a whole lot that any ARU member can do about that.

100% agree.

It was one of an number of decisions within the control of the ARU board, which ended up costing the code millions.

There must be plenty of raw material in Queensland that could be developed. They have been dominating inter state age group footy for a long time. Work on the organic talent to make it gooder.
We are a pro team, we need to win now, recruiting and developing players is great, but this should not be done in Super rugby to the detriment of the team.

Why only use raw material from QLD? This is part of the problem, we should be casting a net world wide to find talent and winning players.

In Mungo ball I support the rabbitohs and see many parallels to the reds in thinking that football is a just a game, it is a business and it is easy to be left behind reminiscing about former glories and pretending that just because you had home grown talent previously then you will get it again. I have great fears for the Reds in the next 5 years, Brisbane is a congested market and our improvement in crowds will be for nothing if we don't improve and the Broncos start winning.

I hope I am wrong and that my doom predictions are far from the mark but I am getting worried.

this is the darkest days of qld rugby ever..

Not really. Its the same effect as when you walk inside (at work) after being in nice bright sunshine. It looks all dark and dingy, but it isn't really, just no where near as nice as being outside in the sunshine.

I want to collect my thoughts before any major posts, but this is spot on.

In the old "dark days" you would go a reds game and expect them to lose. We were poorly coached, but we simply didn't have the cattle. Now we have the cattle and are playing like this.

I've been to just about every home match since 2006, a quick tally put it at something like 58 of the last 60 home games, so I've seen just about every minute of every game live under 5 head coaches. Tonight was the most pathetic, pitiful and gutless performance I've seen in that time. There was absolutely no intensity or effort in defence and the Rebels basically walked through the team to score on several occasions. The Reds title was built on intensity, passion, commitment and defence. Now it's a shambles.

No body, coaching staff included, could watch the last few Reds games and think these men are the ones for the job. Graham now must surely step into the next echelon and into the conversations for not only the Reds worst coach but also amongst the very worst in professional sport, anywhere at anytime.

Yeah, they could be quite a few places higher but I don't think the Reds really do have "the cattle". Not to be a real contender, anyway.

They'd probably be the weakest pack in Australia, and possibly the comp (they might get a points decision against the Brumbies bench). The Reds in the past played to their strengths but also had a better team—forwards and backs as they were at the time—for the game as it was played at the time.

But they are soft and weak now and it's highlighted even more since the interpretation of the game in the last 24 to 30 months has moved away from their style of play.

Plus a number of them have mentally thrown in the towel (it's time to be harsh - no more cuddles).

By all means sack Graham, but they also need to get rid of several players ASAP.

Even if McKenzie returned tomorrow it wouldn't be enough on its own. They'd still be 5-7 bulls short of a prize-winning herd.

I mentioned this some time ago, but RG now looks exceptionally good for his 1st Super Rugby title - The Wooden Spoon. Reds are at the bottom of the table and I can't see them getting themselves off of there.

I have been calling for RG to not continue past this year, now I want him sacked immediately. get the coach from the local under 9's or the tea lady to coach the Red's, anyone has to be better then RG.

Btw, anyone know the crowd figures from last night?

Why the fuck is this even being discussed on the Reds 2014 thread?

Leave it out, we've got other miseries to discuss!

Not sure if I am representative of a true Reds' supporter - but given I was brought up watching them @ Ballymore running onto the ground at FT trying to get the corner flags before other kids snatched them I would say my roots run pretty deep...

I voiced my dismay last week over the pitiful coaching and culture that has pervaded this 2014 team...

With about 15mins to go writing was on the wall the reds team weren't going to win with the lack of ticker so I actually let the mrs change to johnny depp's very freaky smile on willy wonker rather than sit through the PAIN of another defeat - at what use to be the impenetrable home ground...............

I 100% agree with comments above and anyone that deceives themselves by thinking RG is good for another season is completely and utterly out of their friggin heads...!!!!!!!!!

I can understand a bit of mate bias (cronyism was even called) but RG must go and whoever made the call to keep him there must follow -

Just to be clear - I watch EVERY game of s15 every week and mainly only have foxtel so I can watch the REDS...

ABSOLUTELY FRIGGIN RIDICULOUS -

While Im on it - Good game in Free State I think ruined a little by home town reffing - brumbies very unlucky...
