I'm a recent convert to the importance of core strength thanks to Bruce and a few other folk.

What are the relevant King of the Gym exercises that measure superiority in that area? Seriously.

Very simple. The bridge (or prone bridge) this is generally considered the best exercise for measuring core strength.

Are bridge and plank the same thing? I assume it would have to be weighted to measure strength - how is this done easily?

It could be if they did it on an exercise ball or something. I saw some footage of the original Rebels training in this way.
there are plenty of exercises they could do, i wouldnt recommed testing your max rep on a swiss ball... 100kg plus 120kg barbell on a inflatable ball is a recipe for disaster.. They are effective for training higher reps at a lower weight though

prone bridge measures only your abdominal endurance, its not necessarily the best way of measuring core strength either..petite women usually win out in this category

Perhaps half or 2/3 of your body weight would be a way to go?

Yes, plank = bridge. I have never seen the exercise be done with weight vests or any additional weight but perhaps it is done. Elite athletes can have holds of over 10 minutes. David Pocock had a prone of well over 10 minutes while still as school I believe. You can of course also measure side bridges for the core plates endurance around your obliques however this can make the entire process quite messy as you have to test both sides. Prone pushups are also a good indicator of core strength, where the athlete lies flat with their arms almost straight above there heads and presses there body up using almost entirely there ab strength. However the Reds strength staff would know all of this, and a lot, lot more - so I am sure that the core strength is being well tracked.

im america at the moment, you see some of the NFL players coming out of highschool with stats like 230kg squats, some of the NFL tightends squat 320kg and still manage 10ft standing jumps and 4.5sec over 40.. crazy standards

Those boys train like Power lifters though.

Cardio is a non-issue in a sport with a work to rest ratio like American Football and thus it makes focusing all of one's energy on weights easier.

I'm not certain but I think the yanks are much less concerned about steroid-induced improvement in their intenal (baseball, american football etc.) sports as distinct from international sports (olympics and the like).

baseball yes, NFL no...Whilst they arent a signatory of WADA they still have quite stringent drug testing standards, a unanimous survey back in 2001 only unearthed only 6% who admitted to steroid use at some point in there career, that was prior to a crackdown on steroid use.

this is a misconception, similar to rugby union the fitness requirements of the Gridion players are dictated by ones position, overall there superior physical performances have more to do with the enviroments they are brought up in, there talent identification programs and development system is in a realm of its own when compared to other parts of the world.

I went toured a college football program, and they have facilities and programs which in Australia, are probably only matched by the AIS... the NFL programs are on another level again

whilst we are digressing, tighends are IMO the players with the more physically gifted the field, in a way they play a similar role to that of a blindside flanker in rugby union, expected to be quick like a wide receiver but big enough to block as well.

Also there is hardly any technique training in NFL if you are a big powerhouse forward. You just hit the gym and learn the coaches game plan. Props and forwards in rugby have to spend alot of time practicing scrummageing, lineout, clearing rucks and counter rucking, tackling as well as hitting the gym and working on fitness. Pocock is the best example, huge freak, fit as a marathon runner, technically superior to anyone else in the world in his position.

Also, I would back Pocock to pretty much humilate anyone in the NFL in any kind of physical contest. My man love for The Cock is quite strong today I must admit.
