precisely, otherwise its conceiveable that a team would actually have to play a finals match with less then 22 players

Every player who has not played 3 games needs a justification for finals - if they are there because of injuries its fine, replacements specialists etc - it just stops you bringing in players when there are fit squad players available. Vickerman situation is different to Ralph as they have fit second rowers available, the Reds dont have outside backs

Meh, considering there isnt actually SANZAR authority who goes around checking on the status of players injuries any team could easily circumnavigate this rule....

Yep, I agree that's what it should be etc. Has anyone been able to find this rule to confirm? Can't see it anywhere

I got a response from Greg Peters at Sanzar on this last night (via twitter).

He said it was 4 matches, "unless there are extenuating circumstances in terms of injuries in the squad which have to be supported by medicals"

So I suppose the Reds would be able to mount a fairly compelling argument for Jono Lance. Tahs might struggle with a Vickerman argument.

Cheers for that. When do tix go on sale?

VRF: This is probably the best guide, that includes both Members and the general public sale dates and how to get tickets. Personally, I had thought that the Rank 1 team had to have its SF on July 1, and Rank 2 team July 2, but maybe not. The final actual date (of these two potential dats) for the Reds' SF is not yet confirmed on the Reds website:

Media Release: St.George Reds Finals Information

The St.George Reds' Super Rugby Semi-Final at Suncorp Stadium has been
confirmed for 7:40pm on Saturday 2 July, with the initial priority
ticket purchase period commencing this Sunday at Ballymore for full
season Members.

The Reds are guaranteed either first or second place on the Super Rugby
ladder and have the opportunity to secure top spot with a victory over
the Chiefs in Hamilton on Saturday.

The Reds currently own first position with 62 competition points and 12
wins, ahead of the Stormers (58 points - 11 wins) and Crusaders (57
points - 10 wins).

With the Crusaders only capable of gaining a maximum five competition
points in their final match - and the first tiebreaker for ladder
position being total wins - they are unable to overtake the Reds.

All 2011 St.George Reds Members are entitled to purchase tickets during
the Member Only priority purchase periods.

Full season St.George Reds Members will receive the first opportunity to
secure their seat from 12:00pm on Sunday 19 June, at the Ballymore
ticket window only.

The opportunity for full season Members to secure their seat during this
period ends at 5:00pm on Tuesday 21 June; to be followed by a priority
ticket purchase period for Forever Red and 3-game Members commencing on
Wednesday 22 June at 9:00am.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday 24 June at
9:00am.

Full details on the priority purchase periods and ticket prices can be
found below and at www.redsrugby.com.au <http://www.redsrugby.com.au/> .

Vickerman is a signed man with the club since last year, making him part of the squad already so it should be fine.

Maybe, but my understanding is that irrespective of squad status, you needed to have played the games to be eligible unless there were other injuries.

Anyway, what will be will be and hopefully this kind of rule does not come back to bite someone and become a big talking point. With smaller squads next year, it might be a bigger issue but I hope not

With Palu and Mowen injured, the Tahs could make a case for Vickerman. Mumm has to play 6 as there are no other options.

That leaves Pat O'Connor & Kane Douglas to cover Super Rugby and Timani who can play anywhere in the back 5.

If you want a 5-2 split on the bench that will be very difficult.

"Reds eye $1million finals windfall":

http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-sport/reds-eye-1-million-finals-windfall-20110616-1g5l7.html

Extract (my highlighting):

Along with increased sponsorship, Queensland's resurgence has provided a significant financial boost after the state body last year received a $3 million loan from the ARU following several years in the doldrums.

Almost $11 million was lost over three years until 2010, but a profit will be made in 2011 as the rebuilding process still has plenty of hard yards to go.

The QRU will start making part repayments in the coming months but Carmichael stressed all revenue was being reinvested locally in a healthier code.

"Even with the windfall, the money that's earned won't mean all of a sudden it's a great world," Carmichael said.

"To have a final is fantastic, that's a bonus, but what's more important is that we've reinvigorated rugby in Queensland.

"And apart from finals the good news is we've hit every target we've set ourselves this year.

"No matter what happens on the 2nd of July we can be satisfied we've put our best foot forward and it's given us great hope for the future."

Well done to the 2011 Queensland Reds!

From wooden spooners to minor premiers in 4 seasons. Well done to all involved in turning the place around, particularly over the last 2 years.

Now bring on our first finals series since 2001! Go the Reds!!!!!!

Best to do this here, in a Reds thread.....

Holy fucking shit...We are minor fucking premiers with 2 fucking home finals!

Job not done yet, but what the hell. A few years ago the thought of this would have been laughable. Thanks boys. Go win this thing.

Yee-fucking-haa!
