Rebels 2022

mst

Peter Johnson (47)
rebels struggling IMO with a popgun 4-8.

Philip and RHP are not dominant locks in tight, and wallis/wells/wilkins has to be one of the smallest backrow combos in professional rugby.

Yes they are missing Hosea and Leota - but I would be pulling out the stops and giving some big new islander boys a mission and a chance to execute it - go forward!
Best running lock we have in Australia is Phillip. He needs to be partnered with a strong lineout practitioner to make it work. Again, wrong combination so its a wasted option of a mobile carrying lock that many teams would love to have.

Hosea and Phillip is a strong combination. Leota and Kemerny also can provide a target at line out time

The other thing is we don't have a lot of x factor or really don't look like scoring tries. Yet we have turned down a number of penalties to try and score tries. Need to build the score board with some penalty goals.

Agree with mst, Rugbynutter39 and Rebel man promoting Foote from within is not thr greatest idea. Last year, I was hoping we would appoint Coleman but alas.
I think Coleman has shown the value of getting an outsider and fresh thinking. But equally it is about finding those right persons. But regardless the board made the decision to appoint Foote so he needs to be given at least this season to judge his results, and decide whether need to jettison or invest in him. At the same time didn’t they appoint styles as director of rugby to provide guidance to Foote? Or have I got that wrong…

Moving Carter Gordon was an error. Better to keep the playmaking axis from Round 1 and go from there.
To'omua is a handbrake at 10. Plays too deep and casual. Talented, sure, but not a 10.
Long-term decision to have Powell and Tuttle as the 9 options also under question for me.

The other issue in terms of brains trust is playing Uelese injured. He needs probably 6 weeks off as a minimum to get those ribs right.

Bring back a few missing personnel and everything could change, of course. But the Rebels attack has been stagnant for a while now, and the same personnel are still in place.

See this is the thing, we don’t take the points so we put ourselves behind in the game and we put ourselves under pressure both with and with out the ball. This pressure that we put ourselves under contributes to the unforced errors.

From my count we had 8 penalties that we could have gone for goal from, because we knocked back the points on the first two and then missed the fourth we put ourselves so far behind the game that we had to go for tries

Yeah you can see the passion Jordy has out there but he is also injured, for his sake let him get it right then hopefully he can have a strong back end of the season and push for a wallabies cap

I agree to a point but the guy is a walking sick note. He is hardly ever fully fit, when he is fit you can see the positives that he brings but those games are few and far between. I cannot remember the last time I saw him play 50 minutes without being in the hands of the trainers at least once.

We need Leota and Kemeny to add some size and carry to the back row. RHP is a workhorse defensive lock and that is about all he is, if we could get Hosea back that would help a lot but he looks to be out most of the season.

However, all these changes in the pack are for nothing if we can't add a game plan because I just can't see one. We don't play a collision game because we don't have the size to play it. We can't play expansive because we drop the ball more than any team I have ever seen partially because we seem to carry loose into contact and partially because our passing accuracy is woeful.
Our game plan and organization is missing and our skills are just not up to Super Rugby level.
It wouldn't surprise me if the Drua give us a touch up on the weekend.

But I feel part of that is mismanagement, I am not putting that solely on the club. I feel he puts his hand up to try and play through these issues and the club lets him make those calls. For mine I would take the decision out of his hands

Incredible vision.

Very glad I didn't go on Saturday. Not sure what the answer is, tbh. Is it the cattle? The culture? The coaching?

Foote brings a great approach to pastoral care and development of love and respect in the club, but it the team isn't winning it's not going to count for much...

You guys should have kept Harry Goddard, going from strength to strength 1st in Sydney then US MLR, was never given a chance by the coaching staff at the time.

Reading everything and a lot to say

Saturday was the first time I ever left a rugby game before full time, 72nd minute and went to the pub. (Should have gone straight home as it ended up taking 3 hours later on waiting for cancelled trains)

1) Foote, needs to go. 0-7 record, 6 points in 180 minutes of Rugby. Not one fan wanted him as the new coach with how the Rebels had gone backwards with Wessels.

2) Injuries, I don't know how many years in a row we have now started the season with some of our big names sitting in the stands with injuries. Some serious research needs to be done regarding our preseason schedule because we always start on the backfoot.

3) Loss of players, the revolving door of our best players has to stop. Koroibete should never have been let go, Rebels and Wallabies best player over the last 3 seasons and it seemed like they did not even attempt to get him to stay.

4) Score board, take the 3 points on offer. Especially in the first half of the game, chasing the scoreboard because of bad leadership is disgraceful and annoying. We are not a kiwi side, we have a small back row so our maul is never going to overpower a side early in a game by good technique.

5) Captaincy, who is our captain? Michael Wells, when can someone tell him he needs to talk up and have the refs ear for 80 minutes. Have never seen a leader with less impact on the sides performance as Wells. The fact with a fully fit side I would not even have him in my starting 15 makes his selection as captain a massive question mark.

6) Heart, find some. That was F#cking dreadful, how do you expect fans to have passion and get behind you when you can't even get behind your own team mates on the pitch and show some fight

7) Attack, ok we don't have any. Well win it ugly, fans won't care if we are winning with all penalties as long as we win. Sir Alex Ferguson said champion teams don't win pretty, they just find a way to win at all cost.

This week we play Drua, I did not watch the Brumbies this weekend gone. But from watching the Tahs game and the articles afterwards they did not like the niggle. Well this week the Rebels need to give them lots of niggle, it slows them down and stops them taking advantage of quick taps etc. Don't do this and we will be in for a world of pain.

What's Hodge existing discipline record? I can't remember any previous issues.

Three week suspension for his tackle against Fiji in the 2019 RWC.

Given Hodge's form in the first two rounds, losing him for a game might be a good thing for the Rebels.

Yep, forgot about that tackle.

Don't disagree on form comment, just think it's a bit of BS saying its a bad discipline record and suspending a player for a knock down. Seen a lot worse get away scot free and he misses a game for that. Surely this should be a case where the time missed on the field is enough of a penalty.
