Rebels 2020

Jai Arrow is moving for his career and more pay, it’s not personal reasons. Completely different scenario
Hang on Arrow is moving because his misses can advance her career by getting to Sydney and one of Maddocks “personal reasons” is to be closer to his girlfriend. Seems like a double standard

You got Money from the Tahs and Cap space.. They didn't get nothing Financial Compensation as the news has stated. Probably for the best as Maddocks was playing rubbish by the end of the year. He wanted to move home probably to be with his missus who's in Sydney, to be closer to the 7's and to be with Family.

Tahs got Maddocks
Rebels got Cash. .

Win Win or the Rebels wouldnt have done it.
Yeah because cap space this late in the piece when you’re not going to be able to recruit anyone to the end of the European season making them ineligible for finals if we are able to make it is such a win. So glad for that cap space, as to the money it will be an insignificant amount

Clubs also hold on to player Jai Arrow being the latest example of that. Also freeing up space is so useful this late in the piece as there is an abundance of players looking to move that we could now sign
There we go. Looking on the bright side. Sign up one of those abundant players. Problem solved.

when a player wants to change - he is disloyal

when a team wants to cut a player/make space in their salary cap/move in another direction - it is business

When teams start being more moral, I will change my mind and consider a player should reciprocate

Are you advocating that players should be able to come and go as they please because some clubs have treated some players poorly?

I really don't see how this has anything at all to do with "loyalty", an overrated concept in a professional environment anyway.

It does have a lot to do with failing to honour the commitments made when signing a contract that plenty of other people would do virtually anything to get.

Don’t play along, they are advocating that they got what they wanted, nothing more.

Nah, Arrow signed because the Rabbitohs offered him $200,000 more a year then the Titans. Arrow didn’t decide to leave his home city for compassionate reasons.

Completely different scenario to Jack Maddocks and nothing to do with double standards.

Hahahahaha, so Arrow is what just meant to let his misses move? Him wanting to be with her isn’t legitimate but Maddoks is. Good one.

The moaning coming out of some of you is a bit rich. Were you all telling Leicester to make To'omua honour his contract last year when they let him go home early to play the last couple of rounds with the Rebels?

With how many blokes were brought over from the Force, you've got ample experienced outside backs. Maddocks leaving free's up a spot for you to give to a local.

Never supported the ARU closing the Force, always was of the belief that we should of stayed at 5 teams. Just because they have been shut down doesn’t mean we have to feel guilty about it. Leicester had to make a decision on To'omua I wouldn’t of held it against them in the slightest if they enforced his contract especially since he was signed up until 2021 from memory

I never said you did. I said you recruited enough outside backs from the Force that losing Maddocks is not the end of the world.

They didn't have to make a decision though. To'omua asked as he wanted to return to Aus to be eligible for the WC. Leicester obliged as there's no point keeping a player who doesn't want to be there.

Mate freeing up cap space is not just about signing new players, it also gives you the ability to upgrade the contracts of existing players so that they are less likely to leave in the future..

They will probably regret just letting him go when they get relegated. He didn’t seem to concerned about playing at the World Cup when he resigned in 2018. Not a fan of it either way really.

Maddocks is our best backline prospect, it’s like the Lions in the AFL until we stop these blokes sooking up and walking out we will be mediocre. Like the Lions there are probably a few key areas we are failing in that is contributing to the players wanting out. But we will never be successful when we put 3-4 years of development into a player for them just to say I am going home despite being contracted. It is one step forward two steps backwards

We need to win to keep players around giving a handful of players an extra 50-100k for one season isn’t going to make them stay. We have lost one of our best backs and are unable to replace him due to how late it has been done and that will hurt us on field. If we don’t win games players will not see a future at the Rebels and will keep leaving

On the back of Jono Lance leaving in pre-season a couple of years ago, it's an interesting development in Melbourne.

Not an ideal situation when players don't want to be a part of the program.

Exactly couple that with Valentni making the move to Canberra. While I think the decision to walk out was poor on Maddoks park it’s a clear sign that what we are doing as a club isn’t working.

You have more than enough depth to replace a winger (remember he was behind DHP). An additional 50-100k to developing players plus an open position will make them likely to stick around though.

It seems like a big step to suggest that Maddocks wanting to return to Sydney before his contract was finished is a sign that players don't want to be at the Rebels or there being a problem with the program.

I also feel like working out a deal to facilitate a player who has requested to leave to do so is far more likely to pay dividends for the Rebels into the future compared with forcing him to stay.

Yeah we will just easily replace our most potent try scorer. Been such a big win for the Rebels a bit of cap space, now all we have to do is put 4 years in developing another prospect

Yeah because being a revolving door will work so well. Not the first bloke to walk out under contract and I think it’s on any club when a player requests to leave to look at what they could have done better.

It’s easy to say as a Tahs fan that it’s best to just let him go, the Rebels don’t have history or access to the same amount of talent that the Tahs do.

How is it a revolving door though? Maddocks spent three years with the Rebels. He was obviously signed for a fourth year but had asked to leave.

I agree that teams need to understand why a player is leaving and what they could have done better but in Maddocks' case I think it has very little to do with the Rebels and everything to do with him wanting to return to Sydney for the sake of his relationship and family.

I think in general, teams should try and come to an agreement that allows a player who has requested to leave to leave. I think there is little to be gained by forcing a player to hang around because I don't think that player is likely to perform to their ability when a situation like that exists. It works both ways and the Rebels have built some goodwill with RA and the Waratahs and if the situation was repeated in reverse you would hope that it would work in the Rebels favour next time around.
