Rebel man
John Thornett (49)
How is it a revolving door though? Maddocks spent three years with the Rebels. He was obviously signed for a fourth year but had asked to leave.
I agree that teams need to understand why a player is leaving and what they could have done better but in Maddocks' case I think it has very little to do with the Rebels and everything to do with him wanting to return to Sydney for the sake of his relationship and family.
I think in general, teams should try and come to an agreement that allows a player who has requested to leave to leave. I think there is little to be gained by forcing a player to hang around because I don't think that player is likely to perform to their ability when a situation like that exists. It works both ways and the Rebels have built some goodwill with RA and the Waratahs and if the situation was repeated in reverse you would hope that it would work in the Rebels favour next time around.
Mate you ask how is it a revolving door how many players have come and gone? Maddoks is just the latest to come to Melbourne and 2/3 years later are gone. You need blokes who are actually willing to commit to the club if you are ever going to have success so of course it’s disappointing seeing another mercenary walk out. I get it as a fan of the Tahs and Eats you will see it in a different light as you will just be happy to have Maddoks home
The family angle is just a cop out look at the Swans in the AFL they have built a very good culture most of their list is from Melbourne yet the players buy in and commit. Also the Swans aren’t afraid to hold a player to their contract, they blocked Papley moving to Carlton for that reason. They also blocked Ryan O’Keefe leaving and he went on to re-sign and win another premiership. Sydney should be the model the Rebels try and replicate they have done the work to build a strong culture stand up to the clubs from the heartland and aren’t afraid to hold a player to a contract as they back the environment they have built to get the best out of that player and they back themselves to be able to work through the issues the player is having so they no longer want to leave. This is a club that before 05 had made 1 GF in 72 years and in the last 15 seasons have only missed the finals once made 5 grand finals and won 2
If a player sooks up because they are held to a contract it hurts them more than anything, it shows mentally they aren’t up to being a professional athlete. Also that goodwill with the Waratahs means so much as of course every other year we will have players lining up to return home to Melbourne.
