Rebels 2020

If we were starving for outside backs then yes, fight tooth and nail. But I'm all for the greater good. Love seeing rugby in Melbourne, love seeing the Wallabies thrive.

Maddocks staying in Melbourne and getting fatter on the bench serves neither.
No he signed the contract make him hold up his end off it. There is one thing is he asked for a release at the end of the season but 2 weeks out from the trail games reflects poorly on his character. Make him sit the year out and then let him play overseas we don’t need people like him in Australian rugby, nobody is bigger than the club or the game

Well, we don’t know when he asked for a release..

The writing has been on the wall for a while though given his 7s involvement so he could train in Sydney, so I suspect the request was made much earlier

Think both clubs would of been keen to get it done quickly so most likely the request was made recently

Not sure when the request would have been made but the rumours about Maddocks wanting out have been going around for at least a few months.

I agree with you that he should have stuck to his word and seen out his contract.

They said discussions were going before Christmas, i doubt it was a last minute request. Rather Rebels tried to convince him to stay and/or negotiate a fair swap with the Tahs

That’s it have some integrity, I would be dirty on him if I was a Tahs player imagine doing all of the pre season then having someone come in and take your spot.

Either way it reflects poorly on him. Ask for a transfer in September that’s fine but do it when both sides are already preparing for the season is poor form from him

Yeah it sicks to lose such a young talented player so close to the start of the season but look at it this way, there is now a spot and money to spend throughout the year in the Rebels squad when any injuries hit

“ Maddocks said he had first approached the Rebels about an early release after last year’s Super Rugby season finished, starting to feel homesick.

“Conversations probably started after Super Rugby finished last year but it wasn't really a real possibility until maybe the last couple of months,” he said.”

So I guess it doesn’t reflect poorly on him at all. He made the request at the earliest and best possible moment.

He asked before Christmas it was in the article the Rebels where saying they hoping to have it wrap up well before Christmas but couldnt get a deal done, and then was wondering if it would be done 4 weeks out. Looks like it was. So he probably requested it at the end of the season or at least when he started training 7's

Look I'm not unsympathetic to your position, but I'm for the greater good of rugby in this country and forcing talented young players off to Japan in a fit of pique is about the worst thing we can do at this stage.

and yet we see in professional players released, told they are surplus to requirements and/or sent to club land by their contracted teams all the time

but when a player wants a change he should honour his contract?

it is an employment contract, not a slave contract

The last few years have reinforced that, in Australian provincial rugby, contracts aren't worth the paper they're written on. Especially if the team is feeling financial pressure and doesn't feel like they need the player, and the player feels like they have an opportunity to build something elsewhere.

And this is good! Why would we want to force players and teams to stay together when both agree that moving on is the right option for them both?

how dare those teams expecting their players to play club footy!
