Rebels 2020

Yep let him go. He clearly lost this appetite last season and if the carrot of the sevens program isn't enough to whet it, he's not going to be of use at the club. Mat Philip is the bigger fish

The 7's program is based in Sydney and he's from there. Let him go and get something in return.

I might be out of the loop but I swear he signed a contract extension last season? If so, I just don't get it. Why sign the extension when you know you're wanting to leave? Common issue in other sports.

He re-signed in 2018 for 2019 and 2020. It is hard to know what management told him at the time either. Maybe the Rebels didn't think they would be able to re-sign DHP and/or Hodge? Back in 2018 they were trying to re-sign Genia whom he had a great connection with but they didn't. Who knows?

With Hodge's versatility and the new signings (since he re-signed) of Deegan, Kellaway, Magnay and To'omua it makes sense that he would want to play somewhere with more opportunity (which also happens to be his home town).

Rebels should release him. He doesn't want to be there. THey have more depth to cover him than any other team. Its better for Australian rugby that he's playing 15. They've already got 38 players signed as far as I can tell!

It's a dangerous game that you see played out in AFL all the time. Players want to head back home at some point. Clubs in non-traditional areas need to fight to keep guys who are in contract. The Rebels should force him to sit out a year if he doesn't want to play here and they can't get a trade. What stops the next guy walking out once a precedent is set.

If we were starving for outside backs then yes, fight tooth and nail. But I'm all for the greater good. Love seeing rugby in Melbourne, love seeing the Wallabies thrive.

Maddocks staying in Melbourne and getting fatter on the bench serves neither.

Is it in the Rebels best interests to make him sit out a year or is it just cutting off your nose to spite your face?

It's a pretty hefty salary to pay to get nothing out of.

His a professional athlete, in his best interests to play no matter where it is. doubt a trade will be made this close to the season starting and he will be a starting wing when his not on 7's duties.

Trade him for Donaldson. Rebels 5/8 is far from decided. Deegan is relatively untested and To'omua probably won’t play there despite wanting to, better for Australian rugby long term as well

For some context he isn’t kicking and screaming about the situation and is prepared to see out his contract. I am happy to see him move on for the greater good, however the rebels should be compensated in doing so, I’d personally be looking at locks. This has been on the cards for a long time, it’s just that it’s happening 12 months earlier. It’s a pretty good bet that his mate Angus will be joining him once his Roosters contract expires in 18months

Media are reporting that the Rebels want either Cam Clarke or Ben Donaldson as the trade.

Donaldson wouldn't be the worst trade (but I'd rather it was HJ-H or Robertson )

Has Maddocks been doing pre-season or is he still with the 7s? Haven't seen him in any of the Rebels photos.

Really Show? Deegan has a couple of very strong NRC seasons under the belt and in 2019 was the standout Aussie player in the comp. He has his other GRR experiences behind him as well, and overall has been playing at a level or more above U20s for at least 2 years. I'd say, between Deegan and To'omua, the Rebels are the one Aussie team that has its No 10 slot sorted much better than any of the others.

And Donaldson is some way down the pecking order for 10s coming through the systems, being behind Harrison, Lucas and Lolesio and probably Pasitoa and Keunzle as well.

Agree. But I think Donaldson is a good 15 option and where the Rebels would be looking to use him now. Makes more sense as a swap for Maddocks who I beleve is a 15 not a 10

The Tahs are never going to give up a key player to enable the player swap.

I doubt this is going to happen because it is too close to the season starting. Given Clark or Donaldson would have to be keen to make the move (given we don't actually have a transfer system where contracting rights can be sold) and neither would likely have better opportunities in Melbourne, I can't see either being likely to take that option.

The Tahs would know that they are quite likely to be able to sign Maddocks next year then they are not going to bend over backwards trying to work out a deal for 2020 (particularly when Maddocks might be playing 7s for part of the year).

yeah forget about getting props or locks. Tahs don't have depth there. Rebels need a replacement winger for their winger. Someone with a bit of utility value. Cam Clarke most like for like. You'd be thrilled to get Donaldson.
