Absolutely, MacPherson, Fewtrell, Ogilvie were awesome all year long. Then Zac Crothers went down, and replacement Aidan King set the single game tackling record with 22 the following week.

One wonders how Churchie would have fared if they could keep Tominiko, Crothers and Jack Edwards on the park for longer. With those guys and Dre Brown in the team Churchie might have been in with a real chance, but I don't see it.

This game is a BBC v NC 2.0 for me. We'll be all pumped to watch a great game but Nudgee will end up too strong.

I hear Ethan Robbins and Cayle Manu were both on the bench last week, so they should be in line to start. Nudgee will officially be back to full strength

Yeah - good call - especially on Drekown Brown . He was the guy that could have made a BIG difference for Churchie this year at 12 . An unfortunate neck injury has finished his contact sporting days , however , has stayed at the school and around the team as their student manager from what I understand . Great stuff.

Younger brother , Andrew , doing very well at Nudgee in the 16A's and who I expect will be well in the mix in Nudgee's 2019 and 2020 teams

I like this team to, King has too many on reputation over performance for mine - I get the Howarth thing but Flook easily got the points in the head to head.

You just can't leave Reesjan out has to be 10 or 12 no ifs or buts.

Yeah its impossible to leave Flook out . He really stood up at Nationals on a heavily flawed QLD 2 team and has carried that form right through the season . There are plenty of guys that would get picked ahead of him on the superficial vote but this guy just makes plays and is a significant part of his team's success

I know ( and understand ) the calls for Roach and fair enough ....BUT ....a case of injury / unavailability in the main , however , consider the impacts that Skerman has had on his BGS Team and Lyndon has had on his TSS team . Big energy players , despite their size , that consistently beat bigger opponents and just will themselves into making plays

Having personally watched just about every game, and discussed at length with two more people who have watched every single game, it will be very tough to knock anybody out of this 23.

There will be opportunities for boys off this bench to force themselves into the starting team, but it's just about set in stone me-thinks. Clear standouts at every position

1. Tyrell Kopua -The Southport School
2. Hudson Mulcahy - Gregory Terrace

I don't follow this as in depth as you all, in terms of all the individual players and names. But I got to the hooker in this team list and thought about the issues I've seen with selection in Australia in general. On this side of the ditch, Aussies seem to put too much emphasis on a players ability to run the ball. There's a few hookers I'd pick over Hudson on performance at the lineout and scrum. Hudson is clearly a good player, his three tries against BSHS are great highlights. But he isn't, in my judgement, the best hooker in the competition.

Churchie vs Nudgee

Ok, so the Vikings are now the gatekeepers to one of the biggest games in decades. Churchie easily put the Farmers out of their misery last Saturday and played simple effective, no non-sense rugby, in fact, a lot like Nudgee. The day wasn’t all rainbows for the Churchie crowd, that ghastly westerly was so drying and weathering it was decidedly dreadful. Thankfully most of the Churchie Dad’s had a Nivea compact in the car for the drive home. This weekend they would be thinking they are a solid chance at ruining the dreams of the blue and white and potentially putting them both into second place for the season. Nudgee knows this game could bring them unstuck and will be more dangerous than a trip to the rectory after 10 pm, as such they will be giving it every respect. Nudgee by 10

Terrace vs Ipswich

So, the boys from the swich gave TSS a little bit of fright and that was exactly what Terrace didn’t want. Terrace is fast becoming the snoozers of this comp, and ironically whilst TSS and Nudgee could be playing for the premiership next Saturday, Terrace and the Farmers could also be playing for the wooden spoon. This is a massive game for the Cardinals and they will be as nervous as a Pakeha at Goodna Railway station on sunset. Ipswich is dangerous and I know the results thus far don’t suggest, however they showed last weekend that they have more than enough skill to put the Cardinals to the sword. Ipswich by 8.

BSHS v BBC

The High School kids got over the BGS boys although it wasn’t without a struggle. They are down a big ranga in the forwards which is like being down two standard white kid for this weekend. BBC was so-so last week, and really didn’t turn up against Nudgee, they are having a few injury issues of their own, however, they won’t have any problems dealing with the street kids. Getting out of the joint intact might be somewhat tougher. BBC by 15

BGS v TGS

The Farmers will turn up and roll out the same thing they have done for the last 7 weeks, and BGS will be right there waiting. Sad waste of a promising season. The bush is devasted by the performance of the farmers this year, so much so Karl Stefanovic and Koshie and looking to ditch the whole drought thing and run a live fund-raising telecast from the school to Save the Farmers Rugby. Maybe get Lee Kernigan involved, they asked Shannon Noll but he was still stung over the whole Duck Creek Races, “private school maggots” fiasco and told them to get stuffed. BGS will have them on toast this weekend they are too well structured and too well drilled. BGS by 20

That's fair enough although I do note the All Blacks use of Dane Coles and Cody Taylor a lot in the 15m channel ( Coles more than Taylor though )

Anyway ......NC's Tevita Katuu set piece has been very strong all year and Zac Crothers is probably the best all rounder in the Group , but again , has had his injury issues this season - and then some TSS folk believe Boyd Radel would be amongst 2 or 3 names in who they think their player's player is. BSHS's Nesta Mahina is strong on the ball and a great carrier as well

They are all quality players worth keeping an eye on as they progress beyond First XV Rugby

If you are happy to pick Tyrell at loosehead where he has been playing for TSS , the lineout percentages of Hudson and Nesta don’t really matter. Can pick them for their work around the field, both offer plenty.

I’d take the highest on that list with the best and most consistent line out throw, because those stats don’t measure a hookers performance. I’d also want to see other stats like percentage of dominant tackles, effective clean outs, metres after contact, error rate. All those stats above are about ball running or tackles, which I guess was my point.

Edit: actually given the TSS lineout percentage, and tackles for Radel, I would pick Radel. You should have plenty of ball runners outside of the hooking position, so if you picked Hudson on that stat you'd be playing him at 6, not 2. I would never measure a hooker on line breaks, tries, tackle busts, etc. It should be lineout, scrum, effective tackles, effective clean-outs, effective ball-carry (i.e. dominant, and ball retained), etc.

The 2nds has also developed into a tight comp. TSS, NC undefeated, Churchie 1 loss, BBC 2 lost. I am tipping Churchie to defeat NC this weekend in a tight one and I think NC will defeat TSS the following weekend. which would lead to a shared title.

So from the consideration of Team of the Year etc - I ran a Top 3 by position based on what I've seen this season , individual impact on team performance and end results

So 45 spots - and no great surprises with TSS at 11 ( 4 x 18 year olds ) NC at 8 ( 2 x 18 year olds ) and ACGS at 7 ( with I think 2 x 18 year olds ) - these 3 x teams making up nearly 60% of the pool

The 18 year old thing is important - but what is probably more important is whether the player who is this age could legitimately be considered "top 3"at his position - otherwise I don't really believe it matters so much as to how many 18 year olds a team has

I think the rule of thumb is if you are trying to win a GPS Premiership ( Coaching aside and just focusing on playing talent ) preferably 9-10 of your starting 15 should be considered "top3" in their position
