Trials are OK but we're in a fairly unique situation: our best talent is far in excess of what a normal 5th Div club could expect to field.

Your suggestion about having localised comps is good; the issue is it would isolate Western Sydney even more in rugby terms. We play two other clubs just up the road from us in Oakhill and Norwest, but the next nearest clubs are Div 3 (Blacktown / UWSH / Hawkesbury Valley) and they're still half an hour away.

I view it from the other way round. Its hard for new clubs to start up as their players have to be prepared to travel anywhere in Sydney in order to play. You have to be prepared to pretty much sacrifce a whole day on most weekends if you play regularly. We had one season where we had Matraville, Liverpool and UWS Hawkesberry in our division and we were a north shore based team (ironically the only semi-local team for us that year was Oakhill). Thats an awful lot of brownie points to be used when people start having families etc.

A regional based competition would also more easily allow the ARU/NSWRU to target spending and promotional activites (e.g. player recuitment) in specific areas rather than the shotgun (or maybe popgun) approach currently used.

I guess what I am saying is that, if you build it - we will come.

Isn't there a minimum number of games a player has to have played for any grade to be eligible to play in the finals of said grade?

Must be registered before the last 4 games of the minor premiership, but besides that no problem. There is a rule about where you played the majority of your last 7 games determines your eligibility as per Grading, but there is nothing about minimum number of games. However you generally need to play at least one game to become eligible for the finals because they check your last 7 games....

Played touch tonight.

Fucking hated it, as I always do. It's rugby designed for the backs not to have those nasty, nasty forwards types smash them and rip the ball off them.

Still, despite being unbelievably unfit due to work, didn't do too badly, and in that one fun moment when it was me and a hard-core retired loosehead, stood him up, offloaded a scoring pass, got smashed right onto my knee - which hurt like fuck, I assure you, because once a prop, always a prop - but it took it, on hard ground. Had to to stretch it out, but it looks like it'll be okay for T78's last season. :praying: :yay :praying:

Ah, the only thing worse than touch is Oztag: it is "semi-contact" and the ball can be grounded etc, kicked (but not above shoulder height) and you "tackle" someone by pulling a velcro strip off the side of their shorts.

It tries to be more like the "real thing" than touch but it ends up like realising the young Thai girl is in fact a young Thai boy, about 5 minutes too late.

Huge thing here, called Tag Rugby. It brings in birds, so it keeps young fellas in the game, so how bad.

But, believe me, there's a lot of short-in, pick-and-go, c'mere-to-me-skinny-boy moments being stored up for the soggy months... >:D O0

Look like this tag rugby never seems to get off in SA. Our kiddies played barefoot contact full field 15 men rugby from age 10. 7-9 year olds 10 half a field. Was very surprise the other day when we played Rondebosch in Slaapstad to see the 10 year old kiddies playing with rugby boots (tokse). Seems their feet get to cold in winter time.

Anyway our schools started for 3rd term next week monday. Our biggest game , interschools of the season is in two weeks time , first week of August. This two weeks the kids from 7 year to 18 year old just do two things. Sing Songs (thats in intervals) and practising their sport (rugby, hockey & netball). This year will be huge for our lot, 150th year.

This past week all we saw is rain but that this two weeks they will have no sympathy for the 7 year olds, come rain, hail, snow they will practise and they will play their matches.

Just heard on the grapevine that a particular cockhead ex-prop from Oakhill (now playing in their backs) got his second red card for the season last weekend and is suspended indefinitely. Time to get the political wheels in motion to get their club arsed from the comp. They really the dirtiest bunch of cocks you ever saw - and despite my misgivings about referees, I have never, will never, call one a Fucking fluffybunny as they have under any circumstances.

Didn't play yesterday (out of town) but we appear to have beaten second-placed Harlequins 41-zip. Yikes! They were right up there and put up a good show last time. Seconds won 24-7 but we're still in danger of losing second spot to the dirty bastards at Oakhill...

Reviewed the card tallies for this year and, rather disturbingly, as of Friday night we had collected a total of 16 yellow (about one-third fighting, one-third pro foul and one-third ref's idiocy), and I hear we copped another 4 on Saturday in Firsts alone. Disturbing stuff given the finals are only a short while away and three yellows in a season automatically gives you a game off...

That record must be one of the worst in subbies. Even worse than Oakhill. Kick them out of the comp.

Let me guess Nick. This game was at home?? Too far for the Harlequins boys to travel

Well, it was only three cards to make a total of 19 :-x

I put down about 6 to refereeing overzealousness - video clearly showed the ref was wrong on half a dozen occasions for those high tackles especially. I put 7 down to professional fouls (obstruction sans violence being the main) and 6 down to stupid acts. So its not all bad :) Funnily enough when we play teams made mostly of white boys, we get cards ala Oakhill. But when we play games against the other bruthas, there are few. Add in the hideous penalty counts against us and you swiftly come to the conclusion that refs are racist, pure and simple 8)

Talked to my contact at Harlequins today - he said they had the numbers but just didn't have the cohesion on the day. They were 8-0 down and hammering us in the 22 then failed to get over. After that it turned to custard.

Maybe your bruthas are racist and only hit white blokes. ;)

I can't decide between:

"Maybe white blokes are the only ones asking for it ;)"
OR
"Maybe white blokes are the only ones who whine to the ref when they get demolished in a perfectly legal tackle ;)"

Early player recruitment for next year.

I play for the Batemans Bay Boars and have only found this site, this season its too late to recruit players but next year is another thing.
We are after some backs and a lock and desperately need a quality goal kicker, please let me know if anyone could be interested and we'll keep in contact.
Its a great spot on the far south coast.
regards steve

I would say the white blokes are the only ones asking for it (especially the ones with their collars up) as in my experience it is the bruthas that complain to the refs the most.

Well, you might have to keep looking boarman. We've just got Nicko (who is Western Sydney's answer to Andrew Sheridan).

I am a former centre. However, in my playing days I was fast enough but too small. Now I'm big enough but too slow. I also break instantly when tackled by Pacific Islanders.

Over rated, fails against the big boys?

Well, on Wednesday I attended the SmartRugby course so I am now, officially at least, able to coach a side above junior level. Lasts two years so I might stick my hand up for the job at the club if we get a Third Grade or the current Seconds coach has had enough.

Today we're playing Notre Dame (third time this year) and the game has been moved from Queens Park to Kyle Bay because of WYD. Club is putting a bus on thank fuck.

You find the course taught you a lot you didn't know ?

Surprised the club doesn't always put on a bus for away games - oil prices will kill subbies !!
