More updates from state champs please.

Other than the Parra v Uni game as noted in my earlier post I watched Gordon v Eastwood, ACT v Manly, Hunter v Warringah, Hunter v Randwick and Gordon V West Harbour.

Eastwood despite going down 14-5 should have won given the amount of possession that they had, the penalties they received and the territory in which they had posession. Bottom line is that two Andrew Kellaway touches won it for Gordon.

I was very surprised that Eastwood started without Lucas Bateman at loose head but was introduced to his father after the game and was told that he hadn't trained all week after picking up a hip injury last weekend. He only came on late in the second half when the game was basically lost and copped a pretty ugly eye socket injury. That said the Eastwood pack started off on fire and had Gordon on the backfoot both in the scrums and at the breakdown. They had a couple of early opportunities out wide but were let down by the handling of their outside backs. They basically bombed two tries that would have given them a monumental leg up over what is a very good Gordon side.
Gordon spent most of the first half trying to get out of their own half. Kellaway was playing outside centre and only needed to be given one real opportunity to display his class resulting in a long range try against the run of play which he converted from out wide. Eastwood down 0-7 responded superbly through relentless forward play and got back to 5-7 at the break with a great try to Robert Black. Eastwood again dominated possession and territory in the second half but a bit more Kellaway magic saw Gordon increase their lead to 14-5. The Gordon forwards lifted towards the end of the game ensuring a first game win.

ACT won very comfortably over Manly after Manly scored first. They have a well drilled team but their backs don't seem to have the strike power necessary to take advantage of the opportunities delivered to them from a very good forward pack.

Hunter v Warringah was a very physical game with one yellow and one red card. Warringah started off very well and looked like they were set for a comfortable win but Hunter to their credit fought back well late in the second half to win a very absorbing contest. Hunter also knocked off Randwick in one of the later games.

To the pools it looks like Parra and Gordon will go forward from pool A.

Dark horse is Central Coast who I'm told had two good wins over Wests and Southern Districts matching the two wins by Parra and Gordon. They play Eastwood in their third game tomorrow whilst Gordon play Southern Districts and Parra have a bye. If Central Coast can knock off Eastwood it will come down to for and against to decide the two teams who go forward.

Norths will go forward from pool B with Hunter looking likely to also go forward after their two wins today. Norths play Manly tomorrow morning whilst Hunter play Central West and both should win their games.

Likley last four being Parra, Gordon, Norths and Hunter.

I think that the final will likely be a repeat of last year's final with Parra defending their title against Norths. Alternatively it will be a Parra v Gordon final with the Parra forwards dominating Gordon's pack and starving their backs ( = Kellaway) of quality ball.

Players who stood out:

Forwards: Afele (Parra), McInerney (ACT), Black (Eastwood), Kamp (Gordon), Hefren (Hunter), Taiki (Parra), Taweel (Wests), Welch (Gordon),

Backs: Kellaway (Gordon), Angeloni (Parra), Clark (Parra), Vianellos (Eastwood), Jones (Warringah), Carter (Hunter),

Was Norths watching in between Manly games... They took the wind out of ACTs sails in the first half, going into the break 19 - 0, which ended up the final score. Spent much of the second half defending well. They had lost hooker Donnelly and 8 Cook for the 2nd game due to injury and struggled massively in the first half against Parra B (Penrith Baa baas) going down 12 - 0 at half time. However they got their game back together in the 2nd half to win 18 - 12. Strange performances in that one minute they look dynamite, the next dog shite... On their A game, they look like they could beat anyone. Should clean up the Marlins tomorrow to set up a semi against TBC... Good call on Central Coast by Ding Dong by the way...

Didn't get to make it today but interested about hunter being darkhorses. I understand that their backline is strong, how did they go today and also curious how papworth went possibly the 8? There also hasn't been a hooker to stand out in the gps so far and I know the Gordon 2 is also the joeys a's 2. How did he go?

In the early game Eastwood vs Gordon .. the Woodies had enough ball to win by a thousand but poor choices cost them dearly. Questions were asked why Cotton didnt play fullback. They will rue this game after the last game is played tomorrow. Gordon look a lot sharper this year and took both chances to score and win the game..

You're absolutely right. If Eastwood had knocked off Gordon they would have been in the box seat for a semis spot given that they had a second round bye (= 20-0 win) and then only needed to beat Central Coast to go forward probably as Pool A runners up to Parra. Gotta say I was surprised that Jack Macalman got replaced in the second half as he's a full game player and just plays so relentlessly. I think there may have been a couple of Eastwood selection/ replacement choices that they'd like to make again.

I'm happy to acknowledge Matson's contribution in Parra's win over Uni which was due to a great performance by their forwards. As stated earlier I thought that Clark and Angeloni were the Parra backs who made the most of the opportunitues created by their forwards but thought that Tepai has played better.

Did anyone see the Gordon v West Harbour game,Was it a comfortable win?
I am also interested in the machinations of points differential deciding who goes forward in pool A,
Are Central Coast a chance to beat Eastwood?Does anyone know the differential as it stands with Parra,Gordon and Central Coast ?

What Fascination??

Thanks for the updates all - can someone please explain to me what is the fascination with uni in this age?

MOTH,

I wouldn't call it fascination! In earlier posts a few members of this website suggested that Uni were going to have their back-sides handed to them as they were effectively the Canterbury team and that the same team was struggling in the 16A's comp.

In response I disagreed, and one of the senior members in this web site agreed with me and even went further to suggest that Uni would give Parra a run for their money (and they did)!! Simple!! With that said do you know or have you heard of any of the players in the Canterbury team, or of their team's recent history? I now do, and its quite impressive! They are not a bad team and they proved it today against a power house district team!

With that said you might recall one of your earlier postings where you told me that I shouldn't shed any tears for Uni because Canterbury is the only representative club in their district; I agree and I will never shed tears for the 'Students'. I hated them when I played against them many moons ago, and my position hasn't changed today!! Instead I shed tears for rugby because Uni, the NSWRU, and the ARU for that matter, do SFA for an area which has the potential for a strong juniors base (that being the Canterbury-Bankstown District)!

Regards,
Newbie

Now there's something we can agree on. Other sports flourish, but Rugby...

Still there are promising signs of life at the youngest ages - genuine village teams sprouting in Balmain & Petersham, and a rethink of minis for that area as well. I think one of the problems at the state titles is the emergence of super teams where players play their 4 required games and are never seen again, and the number of "districts" who stubbornly enter 1 club teams that are under baked (ignoring kids from other areas that would be eligible and strengthen their team if picked), or worse still just do nothing.

Makes you wonder if we do see all the talent or whether it reinforces the need for multiple development paths - I'll punt with the latter

Parra are + 32 after their first round bye and win over Uni. Gordon were + 9 after their win over Eastwood however their win over Wests was not by a big margin...maybe just a converted try or thereabouts in it. They subbed a lot of players during the second half when they were comfortably ahead and Wests put some points on. I'm guessing but they may be +16 -20 all up?

I can't help you with CC's current differential.

I think Eastwood will be fired up for a big game after losing to Gordon yesterday and they had a second round bye. Sounds like CC are going ok though so it could be an interesting clash.

Parramatta ramped it up 3 notches today and clinically put away Wests 45-nil and then dissected Norths 27-nil this afternoon.Gordon will need to improve alot on their performance if they want to even get close tomorrow.
