I'd guess that Horwitz may just have too much on his plate and made himself unavailable. He's got all the school captaincy commitments plus he'd have his HSC coming up. I'm assuming that being school captain he's reasonably academic and does place some importance on that side of things. I may well be wrong of course, just a theory as he's been a favourite of the selectors up until this point.

One never knows, 2 years ago another lad turned down the tour for a similar reason - but it begs the question - who is the back for flyhalf McIntyre?

Im not so keen on Kellaways hairdo but i am keen on his football.

Last I heard about Jones it sounded quite serious: an ankle (see syndesmosis comments in Nat Champ thread!!) - its been 3 or 4 weeks since i heard that so maybe another 3 or 4 weeks isnt long enough

I don't know that Jones' injury was a syndesmosis and anyway, he recovered:

He isnt injured
Kings played against an english touring school today
Jones scored a hattrick
And awarded man of the match!!
At least he will have another chance next year.

Were you talking about Kellaway's red hair colouring?

I wasn't trying to imply that they 'buy' a premiership, I apologise if you feel that I did. Rather, I was suggesting that they adopting the approach that Newington, Scots and Riverview take where they have the Master In Charge who's sole responsibility is rugby. It has come to my attention that at these schools, their MIC focuses on rugby, and on the odd occasion, teaches a class. I believe this makes it more semi-professional as there is less chance of disorganisation and everything runs smoother as the MIC has one thing to worry about, rather than rugby as well as organising classes etc. Joeys will never join the arms race, and yes, all of us will be long gone before any other school has amassed 54 premierships, including 24 championships, but if Joeys want to make it 55 premierships, a new approach needs to be taken.
Joeys have had Directors of Rugby for some years. They have also on previous occasions held the role jointly amongst several people ('age group' grouping). This was aslo present during and leading into various windows of success.

Jones did play very well. Work efficiently with the TKS backs in toe...

Hear TAS are backing up after playing Shore last week and travelling down to play TKS, how have they been travelling this season?

I thought jones had played on with this injury - someone said he limped around against shore and my sources suggested it was an ongoing issue such that he might miss this weeks (SGS) game because of the inevitability of the result.

I was - I've never been sure how one spells ranga - is that the correct spelling? I guess since as i undestand it it comes from urangutan it probably is.

big call to miss a tour like that: you're school captain for 365 days and you can do the HSC again (plus you get extra marks anyway - although he's probably banked them by playing for oz schools earlier this year) but a tour like this is once in a lifetime!
One thing Mr Deans is spot on about when you're talking about this level: you never know when your last game will be so you have to enjoy it.

As I said, I don't know why he isn't touring, maybe he just wasn't selected. But please, re-sitting the HSC? At least there's no doubting your enthusiasm for schoolboy rugby.

Gentlemen, does anyone have the current tables and results for the 3rd XV competition?? please post.

it is interesting that the 1st XV for Newington has a somewhat even spread of year 11's and year 12's in their team, yet next year come the 150th year they will have to have a dominant year 12 team as their 16s or the future year 11s seem understrength and lack the ability and skill of other future year 11 GPS school year groups at the moment.

Could this a somewhat indicator that this year's Newington 1st XV would be their 'dream team'.

also why are there more Trial Games than GPS games?????

Finally, i think that the schools like Shore and Newington have had some luck as there players may have not been selected in representative teams but yet are performing the best during the GPS competition. For for thought gentlemen.

I am very surprised Jack Johnson from Waverley has missed out on the tour squad, unless he is injured he is a standout player

In other news,

Nick Clancy to return to the Shore 1st XV this weekend and so Steane Davies has moved back to inside centre. Such a move will no doubt increase the overall penetration of the backline but it'll be interesting to see how the cohesion copes with only two afternoon trainings this week to due to the onset of the Shore trial exams.

Very strongly concur. Jack Johnson was a solid, ball playing number 7. I do not know what the queensland 7 is like, but for a forward Johnson had very good skill.

The non-selection of a CAS student in the Australian Schoolboys is probably best discussed on the "selectors bias etc" thread, or the "2012 Australian Schoolboys" thread.

Hardly seems relevant here in the GPS thread, unless he is year 11 and on the radar screen for a transfer to ..... [fill in the blanks] .... in 2013.

Two things, Why bring up a Waverley player in this thread?
And, if you read the rugby articles in Sundays papers, you would have noticed comparisons re Hooper, Pocock and Gill. I think that it will give you an insight to todays No7's about needing more than one dimension to their game (eg. Fetching). There are innumerable great fetchers out there, Johnson included, that are just that and need expand to a link/ running, 3rd to the ball game. He will develop this

Wreckless out of interest how many of New's firsts are in years 10 or 11 this year?

I understood that they were planning for a premiership in 2013 being their Sesquicentenary year but it seems that it might be arriving a year earlier!!

Quoting GPSrow :

From what I know the bulk of the backline in the 1sts are year 11 including the "master blasters" Milne & Tepai! The engine room has quite a few year 12 boys. They seem to be well covered with year 11 boys from the 2nds in the forwards with Tim Lee, Stuart Mill, Tom Meaney, Anthony Vasilis, George Prassas etc. all playing good rugby.
