As a spectator at the Sydney high 1st XV vs shore 3rd XV played on the weekend, I would like to comment on the standard of the referee. The reff seemed to 'miss' several knock ons amongst many other things and some have said he prevented shore from a win. The game was very evenly matched and I thought shore deserved a win. I feel for the shore coaches and players who undoubtably would have been dissapointed with the result. In saying that the high team did play well and were also helped along by the referee. High look like a favourite for a 3rd XV premiership in 2012!!

"it is interesting that the 1st XV for Newington has a somewhat even spread of year 11's and year 12's in their team, yet next year come the 150th year they will have to have a dominant year 12 team as their 16s or the future year 11s seem understrength and lack the ability and skill of other future year 11 GPS school year groups at the moment. "

From what I know the bulk of the backline in the 1sts are year 11 including the "master blasters" Milne & Tepai! The engine room has quite a few year 12 boys. They seem to be well covered with year 11 boys from the 2nds in the forwards with Tim Lee, Stuart Mill, Tom Meaney, Anthony Vasilis, George Prassas etc. all playing good rugby.
sorry for not reading the earlier comment from Gristlechewer but thats my point will the 16s for new be able to be up to scratch and provide reinforcements for the squad.

I am very surprised Jack Johnson from Waverley has missed out on the tour squad, unless he is injured he is a standout player
Jack was unlucky but he missed out to two fine Queensland players.

Michael Gunn from Churchie was outstanding playing the 7. position for Oz Schools v. Tonga last month, and Brad Wilkin of Iona College (who missed the 2012 Oz Schools tournament because of injury) got the award for the best player of the 2011 Oz U/16 tournament.

I apologise for bringing up a CAS player and his non selection. It certainly wasn't intended to cause a stir, more that I frequent the GPS thread more and noted the selection discussion here and though I might get some reasonable opinion here, which it did.
So off the CAS thread to stir things up ... :) (not really)

Last I heard was that Josh Shwagger got that award...?

also i wonder which are other GPS schools 1sts/2nds teams have players that have begun at GPS prep schools, i wonder how many more there are...

In shore's current 1sts, only 1 player didn't start in year 7 (5) Fisburn and 3 were in the prep school (1) McCathie, (8) Buckling and (9) Pulver.

regardless of the talk of scholarships

This i can imagine will open a pandoras box so to speak.
Guys, please note we have a thread to discuss imports and this is not it.

It is absolutely a pandoras box, and we've found it works for us to keep the GPS thread free of imports discussion. Most have heard the arguments a thousand times, however I thought your posts were reasonably well considered so I've moved them to the correct thread and not issued warnings on this occasion.

I have to say I was also at the High vs Shore game and disagree completely with the comment above. As an unbiased spectator the High team were penalized 16-6 at final count of game. Certainly done no favours by the referee. It was a tough old game, their 12 is outstanding, played a good game and broke the line several times. It's good to see High rugby on the rise. They have produced many players for Australia and deserved the win. Other teams will under estimate them at their own risk, as I understand they have also beaten Newington.

They only beat an under strengthened Newington B side.... I thought we had covered this, and that team in particular is basically a socials team no one really tries that hard

If Newington are going to field an 'understrength social team' then they deserve to lose, that doesn't take anything away from the High boys....

To be honest, it is difficult to compare a team's standards to a lower newington team. Of course, the newington 1st and 2nd XV are very dominant this year and deserve their contender title. However, their lack of depth is shown in their 3rd's team, where they have been beaten by a rising high side, but could also narrowly win to riverview 4th XV.

Not trying to take anything away from the High side who are portraying the rise of a good side. More so, I am just raising the issue of lack of depth at Newington. They have to be weary that injuries at schoolboy level play a big role in the success or failure of their 1st and 2nd XV. For example, injuries to a couple of key players in the 1st and 2nd XV could potentially cause the failure of their season because of their lack of depth in replacements from the 3rd XV.

Regarding the NewU/16s while their results indicate they may well be the weak link in our open division for 2013, however it should be acknowledged that Yr11 represents for many schools the single biggest intake of boys into the school apart from yr7. Yes all you critics can claim IMPORTS but the fact is all schools have entry points for new students some in year 10 or year 9. So before having the usual and standard well worn out, cry of TONGAN IMPORTS, who knows what talented rugby players may wish to take up the many benefits that can be obtained by education an at Newington College beginning at Yr 11 in 2013.

Having gone Newington myself and recieving a well rounded education I remember my Bible saying a phrase along the following lines " Only he without sin may throw the first stone" So complain as much you like the fact remains that is not one GPS school in existence that has not encouraged a talented sports person into their school or REPEATED him (Shore supporters please take note this includes the captain of your 1977 Co-GPS winning side and one Headmaster from the 1930s). I suspect the New 2014 1st XV will look very different from the New 201216As. If for no other reason than excellent coaching and the inclusion of players from the schools 14s and 15s age group.

I think that the New 3rd's are trying hard! And agree that the High win in round 1 should not be lightly regarded.

I watched the 3rds draw 17 all at Kings in a tough game, and a 12 - 0 loss to Joeys last Saturday ( if I heard the score correctly ) hardly indicates that they were playing socially or "not trying", although I didn't see this game.

I find this Thread disturbing as it infers that the only legitimate players are those that started in the prep.
Our boys who are boarders from the country did not start until year 9 due to the drought. Are they not real schoolboy footballers?

I wasn't trying to say that I think legitamte players have to come from the prep or year 7. I was just answering a question. I've said on this forum before that I encourage schools attracting these great players, as it rewards them for their skill by being able to attend some of the most prestigious schools in the southern hemisphere and adds to overall standard of the competition. Wasn't trying to start another importing argument.
