Just a note from today’s Australia U18 squad announcement. I personally am astonished Marshall Le Maître hasn’t made the cut. In the past year or so he has played and captained all teams he has played in, including but not limited to: SHORE’s premiership team, AAGPS 1st, Waratahs U18. Also he was placed in the PONY squad all throughout 2024.
The only reasoning I could place for his non-selection is a personal reduction from the squad.
Regardless of this selection I wish the Aus U18 team the best in the various upcoming games.

Fair comment and he’s been outstanding this year but it can be considered a good thing that just because you make the PONI squad doesn’t automatically get you a jersey.

Could be injured though so really unsure.

Pretty bad for some of the boys who’ve committed themselves to union all year to get dropped when leaguies who played their SG Ball season and schools league get picked in the 3rd and final squad selection and then make the trip. What message are we sending to the boys in future years. Loyalty doesn’t count

Or the mothballed PONI* players didn’t play enough rugby GAMES and came up short? Thought they’d be an auto pick and didn’t prepare/play well enough this week?

13 of those in PONI* all year and didn’t make the cut!

When were they mothballed? They played Tahs vs Reds in February and a full school season and school association games
They then didn’t play the ASRU tournament….

the 13 PONI that aren’t going to NZ (top squad) or Fiji (ASRU):

Bennett Armistead (Reds)
Bailey Bouquaiux (Brumbies)
Dylan Bretton (Brumbies)
Toby Brial (Waratahs)
Tom Hartman (Waratahs)
Talia'uli Latukefu (Brumbies)
Marshall Le Maitre (Waratahs)
Lehopo Leota (Reds)
Jay McKenzie (Waratahs)
Charlie Poynton (Waratahs)
Treyvon Pritchard (Reds)
Manaia Tetana (Force)
Joe Walsh (Waratahs)

injured, overlooked or league….?

Here for the advice

Maybe picked on last years form and guess what injuries happen and others develop. Plenty of solid names in the squad.

Yes & that’s the very point; picked way too early, missed out on games, and paid the ultimate price of not representing their country on either tour…..

Whole system is broken, play games in February and then lock kids into multiple trainings and camps in what is for most of them their HSC year just to cut them loose at the end of the year 8 months later. It’s a cynical ploy to stop some of them playing league

A bit of culture from my father who was a TAS old boy. He has a way with words and the paint brush.
Painting now hangs in the home of the former Joeys sports master. Painting and poem inspired by the Joeys 21-20 win

This is the tale of a country brat
Who required educational leading
He could run down a brumby in minutes flat
But not, the skill of reading.

You see: They had a place in the Snowys
I seem to forget the name
So they sent their spry boy to Joeys
Where he was taught to play the game

Also learnt to read and write
And from maths graded somewhat lower
Learnt it’s true that one man running fast
Beats eight men, rowing slow

It was the final of the championship
Timekeepers hand on the bell
Hard to see us winning it
But then, you never can tell

Tho the scores are near the same
The lad grabs a loose ball and cleaves their pack
That’s how they play the game at Joeys
No time kick the bloody ball, it is time to attack

And through the mob of grasping hands
Does prance the mountain lad with dancing feet
For in the blink of eye he managed
To bring forth victory from certain defeat.

You hear round the fire in the Snowys
Look, I can’t recall their name
They sent their brat to Joeys
Yer know, the kid that won the game
