Yes that would be great if we could see teams each week and get to follow the progress of players throughout the season. I’m wondering why it hasn’t been done in the past
Ill list off a few of the obvious choices for Newington's 1st XV. I'm only basing this off the year 12's as I have no idea which year 11's are going to play for the firsts this year

Siteni Taukamo -15
Drew Williams - 14
Jesse McLean - 13
Edward Barton - 12
James McGregor - 11
Oliver Townsend - 10
Billy Dickens - 9
Mitch Hislop - 8 (not 100% sure)
Jaydon Villiamu - 7 (he could be playing number 8, and Hislop might be playing for the 2nd XV as their number 8)
Louis Bertrams - 5
Thomas Maclean - 3 (not sure)
Tunui Jorgensen - 1

For year 11, Lipina Ata could very possibly make an appearance as making his first xv debut last year in year 10.
Daniel Wright and Wilson Jenkins could also make an appearance (most likely will be playing for second xv however)

So we will have roughly 11-12 year 12 students playing for Newington's 1st XV in 2022 (with all the boys having at least 1 year of experience and around 4 having 2 years experience of playing in the first xv (year 10)

Good team Dusk. Like the backline. Would have McGregor at 10, Townsend 13, McLean 11. If the backline can shift quick to wing/fback, plenty of tries. But giving McLean early ball is important so 13 might be ok too.Thoughts? Jorgensen 1,Ata 2,Maclean 3 will make a solid front row. There are a couple of yr11 forwards could push for 1s. Need workers in the backrow. Hislop and Villiamu have high workrates. Need one more. Need depth as injuries can happen as well. See what happens in the trials.

I'm all for experimenting. I was just kind of basing the team from last year. I do think Townsend could be a very strong inside-center - and partner for McLean (who's playing outside) which would make Ed wing (if McGregor plays fly-half). I'm not going to speak on the forwards too much as i do not have much knowledge on that but Lipina could definitely play hooker. Other than that I believe we are on the same page!

Joeys lineup for the trial v Marist Canberra on 2nd April (only trial to date).

Note - this lineup is not necessarily the final selection, nor players in final positions, yet. Some rowers who were in Melbourne for the National Championships and last year's No10 are not featured.

5 of this lineup are in Yr11.
6 were in the 1stXV last year, 5 from the 2ndXV, 3 from the 16As and 1 from the 16Bs.

Interesting historical note: Marist No11 Lachlan Roff is the son of Joe Roff (Wallaby winger and Marist Old Boy), and also the grandson of Glenn Roff (Joeys Old Boy).

Couldn't help but notice a few of the joeys boys yelling 'traitor' whenever the number 10 (marist) got the ball. Do you know the story behind that?

Will Brad fitler's son be playing in the 1st xv for Scots this year?
Zac played 16as in the sevens comp and looked very very good. He has the all attributes of a firsts player and played in the harold matt's league comp which is u17's. He definitely could in my opinion play 1's and 2's but i'm not exactly sure.

Why would you name virtually the same side from last year ,they got thumped every game
the backline and playmakers were out of there depth and forwards needed more muscle .

This is gonna be very rough as I'm not 100% but For Scots, the year 12s of 2022 that I know played 1's last year are
1. Sam Berckleman
3. Ben Distaso
4 or 5: Ollie Mccrea
6: Harry davis (Only played a few 1's games)
8 I think: Nick Harris
Nic Vanderryan may also be in here but I'm not sure if he's in graduated or in year 12.
14. James Kotis (National Level sprinter)
15. Ollie cummins.

There were also some year 10's who played some firsts and seconds last year Henry James, Grayson Reimer and Matheus Heslin.

Hi Rippa

With no trial games yet, predicting a starting Newington backline is a prediction. I don't like naming boys because they were in 1sts last year etc as there definately can be better options however I believe the coaches will go with this to start and make adjustments if/when needed. Combinations can be experimented before finalising for round 1. What is your trial/GPS backline/forward pack ?
Agree that the forwards need more grunt however Newington have not lacked in the muscle departed as much as they have lacked in the fitness/set piece department. A well balanced pack is essential. Newington's style of play is to barge up the middle and then spin it wide. The "bargers"need to be fit enough to go till the end of the game ( something that goes missing ) and the workers/backrow need to get to the wide breakdown quicker than the opposition ( mainly the faster Joeys boys ). I know there are a few new boys that might surprise !!

Hello Rippa
What happened last year was unfortunate, First, they were a very young side, nor did they have the benefit of a full season to develop the combinations. Second, had they played some of the sides who had beaten then so well, in the first round, the second round of the GPS, might have been very different. In this regard, I have no doubt that we would have seen a level of improvement. It would have been very interesting to have seen the level of improvement, in a more lengthy season.

In school boy Rugby, Boys and their Teams, can change enormously due to personal physical growth, at that age, in addition to their skills level and improvements in this area.Again, I would stress the benefit of experience and its impact, on player standards and confidence, in a second round. Rippa, I don't know if you follow Colts Rugby, but this phenomenon, occurs regularly.

I remember well, that in 2013 that Scots beat Newington, I think it was 101-0 in the first round. Come the second round, it was 22-12 to Scots. A significant improvement. And the following year with many Newington players returning from 2013, New beat Scots 27-12 in the first round. They, also went on to win a share competition, with Scots who drew with Newington, in the second round. Therefore, improvements, can work both ways.
So Rippa, I can't disagree with your last year's analysis, but this year could well be very different.

Kind regards
B&W

Hello Wyvenboy

Again, an excellent analysis. But I must admit, I am bit out of touch with Newington Rugby, for obvious reasons. As I remember talking with a member of the coaching Staff, back in 2019. That, there was an attempt or belief in Newington Rugby, to move away from its traditional bash and barge game, based around a big, physical forwards to more of a backs game. Certainly, in 2019 the 1st XV had a excellent backline.

Glen Roff, was my uni lecturer at UNE in the mid 1980s, he was still playing Rugby for Armidale Old Boys back them, with his younger Brother Damien. I played against both, them as a Robb College player, and we well beaten with both Brothers dominating us in the Centres

I'm just posting the predicted players for this years 1st xv and their positions, that's all. I never said this was the best choice for Newington. Besides that, you are basing your opinions on a team that was primarily full of 16 year old's during a season that was cut off way too early. Feel free to discuss what you would change from last year's lineup.

Jack O'Mara is a Canberra boy who was in Yr12 at Joeys last year, and played in the 2nd XV. He's obviously repeating at Marist Pearce (which is where he lives), and the Joeys boys were giving him a bit of a (good-natured) pizzle.

Hello Wyvern Boy and welcome to the forum. Totally agree with your comments.

From the few games I watched in 2021, I observed that the boys were individually talented however they lacked cohesion, game awareness and direction around the park which was understandable considering that it was most of the boys first time playing in the 1sts.

The forwards need to be dominant at the set pieces and aggressive at the break downs for the 9 to provide clean ball to the 10 or the first receiver of play.

As you mentioned In your previous post the backs will need to improve on their defence in the centres.

IMO if the team can input this into their games I believe that the boys from Stanmore will have the potential and application to execute on game days and dominate their opposition.

Cheers

Good days when I played at Armidale Teachers in the early 80's. We hated Robb College with a passion. We were coached by former Wallaby Arthur Tonkin. Still have an old jumper which has seen better days.

Hi Love2Scrum

Will be interesting to see what the coaches come up with in terms of combos. Joeys will target opposition,12, 13 to allow their 15 room to link with wingers. That's how they played in 80/90's when 12 and 15's father's were playing. The formula doesn't change at Hunter's Hill. New will need a good defensive centre pairing. I beleive McGregor at 10 may be able to direct play. He has a decent pass, taclke, kick and has good speed( I'm not his dad!!). Think he would be wasted on the wing. Where Mclean,Townsend,Barton and co fit, we will see in the trials.
Most games come down to forwards and possession. If New's forwards can do the job at set piece and breakdowns, get enough ball to the backs, I think they have the game breakers to trouble most teams. Can't wait to watch the trials and see how it turns out.

Hello Joker, sounds like you and me, might have a lot more in common, than a Love of GPS Rugby. In 1981, I played Teachers in the Grand Final and Robb won 10-3 to be premieres. Two weeks before a rather shady looking team of players beat us 28-0. But a protest was put in and a number of Teachers Players, were ruled ineligible to play.

Please note Joker, I had nothing to do with this protest.

Anyway, by 1982 the teachers club had all but collapsed. The last match Robb played Teachers 1st Grade was that year and Robb beat Teachers about 43-4. Nevertheless, teachers played well and the local Paper acknowledged teachers had a good backline. After, 1983, most of the teachers, played for Earl Page, who had a great backline in 1983, with Peter Tonkin at 5/8 and Ian Lloyd at full back. They were one of the few sides to beat Robb. Who won the New England Premier ship in 1983.

After that I recall teachers affiliated with the Page-Wright Barbarians or Armidale Old Boys, who entered the Competition in 1983.

I have now, but lost all contact, with most of my mates from Robb. But, they were great days. I fell in love with a beautiful girl from Austin College and another from Wright College, unfortunately, their lives moved in different directions. As did mine. But they were wonderful beautiful days of my now long lost youth.

I am happy to report that at the AGM in 1983 the ATC rugby club changed its bylaws to allow non-students to play. Up until 1982 it was students ONLY but when you have a cohort of 120 per year and only 10 are young men the numbers just died. The Soccer club allowed locals to play but not the rugby club.

By 1982 we had some players playing up to three games on a Saturday. Finally in 1984 we had some players, mainly made up of blokes who had been kicked out, banned from Old Boys or UNE clubs or were released from jail and were looking for a "get square". These players appreciated the "Animal House" vibe we had going and the fact we had 100+ young female teachers attending most games. (the keg shed was infamous for its bacchanalian nature...hope you went there)

My final year was eventful as the 1st grade team did contain Peter Tonkin (classmate of mine at SJC) and about 12 townies. The best game was against Glen Innes when we won the game (Tonkin field goal again) and the fight in Glen. Best bus ride home too, after first stocking up at the Imperial Hotel.
