No worries. Have contested scrums but can't spend 5 minutes packing and repacking it for no obvious reason. Alternatives need to be explored. Your options could work. Anything to speed up the game. Rugby should be a game for all shapes and sizes but something needs to change.

Good to see WC in Aus 2027 and 2029. Now for the administators to maximise the exposure and fill the tills. If the Wallabies do well ( and that is semi at least ), then it could be the kickstart Rugby needs. Long 5 years till then. A super Rugby and Bledisloe victory between now and 2027 would be handy.

Uncontested scrums...... that will do me. If we take away the contest at the scrum we are no longer a game for everyone. Perhaps a better alternative is that if the scrum does go down there is no reset it simply reverts to a free kick to the side who was feeding the ball (with no option to take a scrum) or a penalty against the offending team (no option to take a scrum)?
I like this, both teams get one chance to set the scrum and if it fails, the team who messed up has a free kick or penalty depending on the infringement was. Would speed up the game considerably and force players to stop messing around at scrum time.

You are spot on. The tree grows healthy beacuse of it's roots.
The next 5-10 years are crucial. The next WC is important for advertising and money.

Whatever the RU gets must re invest in junior rugby. Hopefully the Wallabies can go far in the WC. If not, I'm afraid they'll be a lot of hair spray and fake tan around ( and tight shorts and singlets ).

Hello Wyvernboy
You are spot on, the failure of Rugby Australia, over the Years to invest in grass roots Rugby, particularly club juniors is disgusting. A major effort needs to be aimed at 6-12 years of age and it needs to be "Australia Wide". If boys entering secondary school have played Rugby as their first sport, the appeal of soccer will diminish in the later years. Creating more appeal to play Rugby, for the 13-18 years group. The 73-0 defeat by GPS over CHS last year is a disturbing trend. Yes, I love GPS Rugby, but if we reduce our player base to far, the game will lose some brilliant talent. Also, Rugby Australia and the Super Club franchise, need to spend on players at school and stop allowing the GPS schools, from becoming recruiting academies for League.

Union as a genuine World Cup Sport, should be miles ahead of league, instead Rugby Australia has simply allowed the game to be denuded of its potentially, best players. Yes, money is limited, but grow the game at its base, Grassroots level. them, keep the players by investing in them. It's not Rocket Science.

I have many concerns with the "dying sport" of rugby. Perhaps in 10 years GPS and CAS rugby might turn to a Rugby League competition.

Is there any chance all the GPS Schools can stop playing AFL ? the Queensland schools have stopped playing the Southern game, and there are only 3 NSW ones which do ( Newington, Riverview, Shore.)

They don't allow League, so why do they play AFL? It's good to see Scots, Kings, Joeys not playing it, I'm not sure why?

hi everyone, Stannies supporter here, slightly disheartened that our Saturday fixture is at home instead of away against Scots. As a single man myself, i've heard Scots has an excellent selection of single mothers, country women just aren't floating my boat as of lately!

dingleberry458, i can second you on this, nothing made me more happy then finding out we were playing away at Scots on the weekend

Hello Grimey

At Newington, the Game is pushed by the Depuy Head, a Victorian.Hopefully his time will come where he moves on to greener pastures. But until then, we must suffer.

AFL is like a disease. Once it;s in, very hard to get rid of. Joker is right that the AFL admin have spent millions investing in schools etc and now have their base. Hopefully S,K and J can stay strong. Doubt the others can go back. Football is not as bad. At least it's an international sport and broadly popular. The decision to stop playing AFL at GPS schools is now up to the heads. It can not be allowed to be an official AAGPS sport. If that happens, it's another nail.

Hi Black & white

Wish I could share your optimisim once the DH ( and I mean Deputy Head ) moves on, but it won't happen. They have increased the teams and are playing it in yr5/6. At the end of the day, it's competition and Rugby needs to lift it's game.

I commend your boldness however Rugby League has turned into a growing sport in recent years. Many GPS players are choosing a more lucrative and secure pathway in that of the Roosters, Souths etc... unfortunately the ARU hasn't kept up with the NRL.

SB
Growing sport? Where? on a global scale rugby union vastly outstrips league and AFL for growth (these are both mere curiosities in the global village). Now that the USA has been awarded 2 x world cups to host there will be a further leg of global growth and opportunity. I would venture to say that far more GPS old boys are lost to rugby union in Japan and Europe each year than all the boys genuinely lost to league in a decade. By genuinely lost I mean those who were always union players, I don't include the league boys drafted in to enhance a few schools squads in the senior years, they were always going to back to league and the quick buck anyway. Union has serious work to do in this country, pathways and development must be improved so that we stay competitive with the rest of the world. Fear not though, if it is a competition about opportunity (financial or otherwise) union smashes league and AFL, if it is a competition about lifelong mateship then union is undefeated champion.

You are fundamentally wrong here. The ARU has become farcical with its financial situation barely boasting a positive. RL has unfortunately overtaken rugby union and I dont see it slowing. look at the likes of Crichton, Billy Smith, Penisini, Sua'ali'i, Taane Milne Cameron Murray etc... all lost to Rugby League. Particularly loosing talents such as Sua'ali'i and Crichton highlighted the ongoing financial troubles of the ARU.

sadly this is also the case at riverview, the principle there is very much for getting rid of the “culture” and is slowing undermining the rugby there. Would be no surprise if we saw him even ban warcies etc in the future

It comes down to opportunity. There are 12 NRL clubs in Sydney plus all the second division teams like Bears offering professional contracts and opportunity. They get roped in early with SG Ball etc and get given lots of shiny toys and told they will be playing first grade. 100s of players get an opportunity. The alternative is playing four games a season for the one NSW U20s team and then going back to a part time colts comp. No money and no opportunity.

How many Shute Shield teams own their home ground or have a profitable Club house? Without a professional structure and functioning assets we are screwed. Every leagues club has a better facility than the one at Daceyville. Every AFL club has their own AIS. We cant rely on Super Rugby as a draw card with so few spots available and no real reserve grade or U20 comp.

The fact that some rugby schools bankroll committed league players all in the aim of winning a school premiership sucks.

People forget that the procedure of the referee controlling the scrum process, screeching "crouch, bind, set", and penalising early shoves, wheeling, collapsing etc is a relatively recent phenomenon. Back in the day the ref would call for a scrum, indicate the spot and back off - the packs would then sort out everything from there, and engage how and when they saw fit. This wasn't all that long ago - check out some vintage footage.

I have a radical suggestion for fixing scrums in the current environment - have all 4 props NOT bind with their outside arm, but prop their elbow on their outside knee, thus forcing the outside legs forward into a stable, firm position. There would still be room for the ball to go in (striaght!), and it would force the hookers to actually strike for the ball, currently a lost art. And I can guarantee there would be no collapsed scrums.

I wrote something very similar the other day Homer and agree 100%
