Joeys played AFL before 1896 as the Marist Brothers considered the rugby to be too rough. Common sense prevailed as Joeys wanted to join in the rugby competition due to AFL not being widely played. Hence a darkness fell upon the land till less than a decade ago AFL crept back in. It is by all accounts kept incheck by the school and boys. Having a rugby culture unseen anywhere in Oz helps too.
Yes - kept in check. There are ZERO boys playing AFL at Joeys.

I have many concerns with the "dying sport" of rugby. Perhaps in 10 years GPS and CAS rugby mwe simply become a obscure and mediocre game.
Hi Black & white

Wish I could share your optimisim once the DH ( and I mean Deputy Head ) moves on, but it won't happen. They have increased the teams and are playing it in yr5/6. At the end of the day, it's competition and Rugby needs to lift it's game.

i completely agree with league in the summer! Newington offers Touch Football which is essentially rugby league with less players and its better suited for summer season.
That is some positive thinking,Dusk, but it should also extend to Australian Rules, not just to League. If Rules football was to become a major summer sport. It would be better received in NSW and Queensland. To me, its not the game, but rather the capacity to take players away from Union. In fact, maybe the GPS Headmasters should designate Aussie Rules, as a Summer sport. By keeping both sports as separate sporting entities, with no crossover between the two.We could take out the rivalry between them. Sports clubs should now consider the possibility of Joint Franchise
between Rugby and Rules Clubs.

So a club like Parramatta Union and Leagues, would take over Aussie Rule clubs in Summer, including the Western Sydney Giants and the Sydney Swans, would be taken up By Northern and Eastern Suburbs Rugby clubs. Yes its pipe dream, but unless we can end the rivalry between the codes, Union will lose by virtue of its financial predicament.
So please any suggestions how, this might work or not work. We need in order to save Australian Rugby, think "Outside the Box".
Regards B&W

yes it is very sad and it can be seen with their so called mascot “iggy the moocher”who has been around for years and who all the boys love with it being one of the key things they look forward to in year 12, is now banned. I know it has created uneasiness and upset within the View year 12 cohort that such a lengthy tradition is taken away from them.
I loved Iggie the Moocher as it was so unique to View. Such a shame.
