Melbourne Rebels Players - where are they going?

Opt out of what? They are under contract

RA is not going to pay them and then have to pay more players to take their roster spots. If they want to leave after that’s fine, but as long as RA is paying them they might as well get their moneys worth

Exactly, it is not so much that they are signing new 1 year contracts, they already have 1 year left on their contract with Rugbyau and are just seeing out that contract at a different location. Can’t blame them for seeing how that year goes and if the clusterfuck that is Australian rugby sorts itself out.

They can opt out of going to a club they don’t want to.

Having a huge influx of players if they are only going to play there for one season can be hugely disruptive for the squad and doesn’t really help the list build

They can.. but RA can't force them to go to a club so it shouldn't reach that point, and we haven't seen a player opt-out yet either, and frankly i'd be surprised if we do...

Lots of posturing from managers through the media, no doubt to get better deals/ugprades/renegotiated contracts but there's none that strike me as though they're going to sit out the season.

no the story hasn't changed, Waratahs asked for 11 (inc Kellaway), 3 opted to negotiate, 7 refused (at that point) to go to the Tahs, they may have changed their position as the Tah management changed, other options didnt eventuate or they have negotiated a better deal. so far the only confirmed one is Kellaway, Tupou is apparently a done deal, Talataiana (who wasn"t contracted last year) is training with them. One or two (inc Leta) others are rumoured to be in talks. we will see what happens, but as the heat dies down players will find a spot they are comfortable with. As i said in my initial post this was all much more a F@#$ you response to RA than a snub to the Waratahs.

Pandaran's article never said that the Waratahs asked for those 11, just that those 11 nominated a team other than the Waratahs when they were asked in May where they would like to go.

And at the time, they were missing a coach and DoR... so it's an entirely expected response..

Furthermore I think there's weight to the argument that it may be a negotiating tactic also to extract more value out of a deal which requires them to move to NSW to reflect the high cost of living that exists there.

well, that may well be the truth but what i was told by someone (who really would have known) within Rebels organisation that 11 players had been specifically requested. either way as i said they will all hopefully end up where it helps their careers.

To lose a whole franchise and expect the others to pick up the pieces always struck me as wishful thinking. Where are the Euro/Jap offers for these players? RA will be working over what they can salvage from the mess but at the end of the day we will lose a lot of players. It looks like most of the better players have been retained and that is a win for RA with Lions and RWC coming.
Let's see what happens end of 25.

To the Brumbies to replace Tua has been the solid rumour. Hasn't moved much recently, but given he left the wallabies camp for personal reasons he might have a bit on his plate outside the game at the moment.

I don't necessarily disagree with you but it's worth pointing out that this is literally the first time I've read or heard this angle presented.

The whole fucking mess of the Force in 2017 and Rebels in 2024 has been predicated on the playing lists being picked over by the establishment clubs (/"franchises"). Shrinking to greatness and all that, certainly not their benevolence in nobly taking on the contracts of former Force/Rebels players.

Very True Tex. The basic issue from my POV is coaching, When you look at the Rebels playing groups over the years they have had some years with excellent players and they should have been one of the best teams in Australia in those years.
I was surprised when the Force was shunted and the Rebels were more obvious due to financial problems so not such a shock. It is the wash up that is very messy and several players may be forced to review a rugby career, which is a waste.

Carter Gordon also carved up in the centres for Tweed in QRL on the weekend.

Scored a try, ran for 150m and didn’t miss any tackles.

Sounds like he will be elevated to the Titans earlier than next year, might see him off the bench soon.

Sigh.
