I think Cipriani will take fly-half honours now, since hangers, barnes, To'omua, lealiifano all re-signed with their current clubs. Free's up a fullback postions for the likes of one of the league players!

I shall be astonished if Macqueen does not sign at least one more specialist 5/8 - i.e., additional to Cipriani - and one who can cover 10 and 12.

The pool of players available to the Rebels is not confined to those on the lists of other Australian S15 teams.

Folau, Gasnier and Mortlock. That back-line is many things but small is not one of them. Shit.

Yeah, my thoughts too.

$1 million a year for a guy who has never played the game? How stupid can you get? Yet still no flyhalf. Not one.

If you are going to recruit a mungo get him very young and very cheap, otherwise get someone who is ready to play the game. Rugby has many specialist positions and skills, and rugby league skills alone cover exactly none of them.

He has played flyhalf, but apparently not any more (recruited to play fullback), and even if he is now the preferred flyhalf who will take the spot when he gets injured again?

no need to start jumping up and down just yet, there is still a long recruiting path ahead, interestingly they havent yet signed any kiwi or south african players, something which i expect they will do plenty of in the near future.

I think at the end of the super14 season we will probably see a few players from south africa and new zealand sign with the Rebels, they might not want to damage there selection chances in there current side by announcing any earlier.

Additionally i think the same will happen with a few of the academy and junior players, its ludicrous to think that the Rebels havent yet signed any academy players, im sure they have already penned a few, however like mentioned above they probably want to avoid these players receiving the cold shoulder and hence have kept it quiet.

He nearly always plays flyhalf for Wasps.

Where are the Argentineans? I thought the majority of there national side would be keen to play some Super 14 for when they become a part of the tri-nations

There may be some unforseen consequences for opening a Tri-nations window in the NH, such as low numbers of the Argentinian players migrating to the Super 14.

yeah, they've only signd 14 so far. Give them time. Jump up and down about it in November if they haven't a decent 10.

And Falou will be getting a lot of corporate money, a little bit of Rebel money, a bit more ARU money (incentive-based) and a shit load of corporate money.

On a completely different non-Argentine/Folau tangent, I played a match against 2009 Vic/Aus Schoolboy Nathan Palia last night. He is a very good player.

Surely he is on the list as a Rebels Academy target at very least. I get the feeling though if he really wants to go places with rugby he will have to do a TPN switch from 8 to 2.

Rebs need to start showing Vic grassroots loyalty, even if it's just through an academy set-up.

They'll come through eventually, not immediatley. I wouldn't worry about the lack of local talent just yet.

how did it take the Brumbies to get their contracts?
Completely different situation.

They came on the stage when the sport just turned pro. In fact they were a result of. So EVERYONE was available. No one had contracts.

For the Rebels, they need to work in with who is off-contract only and an existing season and the fact there is a RWC next year. Makes it a tough environment to recruit. They won't have their preferred squad for a few years I would suggest.

Dunno, but isn't Dane Haylett-Petty the first WA Junior to come through the ranks?

The ACT beat NSW just before the Brumbies were formed. The local talent has always been there. They beat Wales in 78 for examples and they were 5Ns champs at the time.

There is a few so far, Tyrell, Haylett-Petty, Turner and a prop (his name escapes me). Also there was a guy at the start of the Force who was Western Australian and has been playing with the Reds.

Overheard Sitiveni Mafi having a private conversation with someone else prior to the Gordon - West Harbour game in the weekend. He told this other person that he was off to Melbourne to play for the Rebels next year.
