The Reds smashed the Bulls in 08 with this combo.
We also need to remember that when Barnes was at the Reds they had next to no platform from the forwards.

Not you are not. BB stood too deep at 10 for the Reds. When they swapped QC (Quade Cooper) came up closer to the line and Barnes played the steady hand outside of him.
Barnes is limited, but you know what you are going to get - a good defender, and calm head, strong organiser and good dummy/straight running. He is the best foil for Cooper at the moment (I still see a possibility of Horne or Chambers type being able to play 12 eventually though). Cooper is obviously the complete opposite to Barnes, except he is also a strong organiser.
It's a big call to give Slipper a start against Lo Cicero and Castrogiovanni, 2 of the best and most experienced props in world rugby. If Slipper holds up here we know we will have a prop of high quality in the making.
Huzzah for Barnes getting promoted and Simmons getting a shot over Chisholm. Giteau, Chisholm and Robinson all needed wake up calls...well Chisholm just needs to get out of the side more to the point. Good on Burgess for truly earning a call up as well.
I can't say I'm surprised that changes were made but I won't be surprised if many of these changes are reversed next week for the French game.

The game vs the Bulls that I mentioned above was the first one in 08 that they swapped (I think). They won comfortably in the end (I remember as it was my bucks night - although I don't remember much after that). I asked Latho after the game what the difference was and he simply said 'Quade' - 'he was able to play to our game plan' (implying that Berrick wasn't).

It is a play off for the French game isn't it? If Simmons, Barnes and Slipper go well, I expect they will keep their spots. The others I expect to see changed back.
I hope you're right, but I just can't help but think that Deans will go back to the tried for the French under a mirage of wanting experienced players to take on an experienced French side. I think Barnes will need to be MotM or close to it to hold his spot over Giteau, I dunno I just have that feeling. I hope I'm wrong though.

It's a bit of a banana-peel promotion for these guys, especially Slipper. If they win the match people will say "It's only Italy" so it won't count for much, but if they lose it could well set their careers back a couple of years. And it should be a tough match. All the angst about how England would target our scrum and get at least one pushover/penalty try and we'd get at least one prop carded proved unnecessary as England chose another route. Italy won't though -- it's pretty much the only string to their bow so they'd be nuts not to use it. It'll be scrums all day if Mallet gets his way.
btw I wonder if this is the first international side to have 3 preferred LHPs (and no specialist THP) in the same lineup?

Well these are the changes that we have mostly been screaming for (myself included). It will be interesting to see reactions after the game. Slipper and Barnes are the two who I'll be most keen to observe. Good games on the weekend could set them up for long term starting positions and give their rivals a bit of a rev up.

Had to give Slipper a start - has outperformed Benn R for weeks - rather see a tough and talented kid get a start than an incumbant not playing well (reckon Robo will now be motivated and we will see him back to his awesome best in 2011 in time for RWC - Barnes should stiffen the defence
