I ain't no socialist but we've already had the two biggest franchises already go bust and need a bailout from the ARU.
You want to give them unlimited ammunition to shoot themselves in the foot with?

I have to agree Gagger. As much as I loved Higgers playing for the Reds I'm not prepared to put the finances in stress to do it. Cap or no cap.

Where did I say that?

You didn't. Having a giggle, mate.

You'd hope the primary goal of any outfit would be to win trophies, not necessarily provide Wallabies or create roles for fringe players.

In the Force's case, I'm not so sure.

If it is b) then it will never succeed. There will always be more schoolboys from QLD and NSW whilst the AFL continues to dominate WA and VIC in the hearts of minds of the average schoolboy. Case in point... The Melbourne Storm (yeah I know it is RL, but it is a similar situation) despite being around for something like 15 years in SL, ARL and NRL STILL is predominantly NSW, NZ and QLD players.

I would love for it to be b, but realistically can only ever seeing it be a.
Hmm... Ioane, Tapuai, Lealiifano, To'omua, Siliva...

We've produced plenty down here for some time. To our credit we have a decent Islander population which supports the competition here.

Instead of relocating interstate, they can now come via a local pathway.

I remember a few weeks ago Dave Dennis was mentioned in connection with the Rebels for next year. Can only assume he won't be required now?

Umm, their notorious historical problems had nothing whatsoever to do with 'excessive player payments', not even close. Rather, maladministration and/or poor team performance. Just crap general management and leadership prior to those bailouts.

I doubt Jim Carmichael would accept a description of his management team as 'kids with dynamite'.

jeez... quit your whinging people..

This isnt the ARU's fault, it isnt the Rebels fault, its a simple case in which Higgers was offered more money by the Rebels...

The thing i fear for the sanity of this forum, i doubt he is going to be the last Reds player to sign elsewhere in 2012.

Thats what people are suggesting by creating a scenario where clubs dont abide by salary caps...

Queensland might be in a slightly better position to spend more on players now then 3 years ago, but if the notion of a free trade market was introduced in Australian Rugby back in 2009-2010, it would have been the death of the Reds with the Western Force and Waratah's having the revenue to spend significantly more on players.

Free trade isnt the answer and the central contracting system has been exposed due to the increase in player numbers within Australia the past 5 years.

I get that Reds fans are annoyed, but you really need to stop bashing the Rebels. They're trying to build the best team they can, not piss in the punch at your party. The Waratahs signed Kurtley as a school boy, brought him through the system, suffered his growing pains, saw him become a world-class 15 and then had him walk away almost straight away. That's the reality of professional sports.

As for the system, it might not be perfect but everyone knows the rules of the game and makes decisions accordingly. Maybe the Reds could have re-signed Higgers, but lost Quirk, Gill and Schatz as a result. Or maybe they would put themselves out of the running with Quade. Who knows?

Also, I think it's quite funny to be slamming all this as "unionist-socialist" or whatever. After all, it is rugby UNION. ;)

I asked them on twitter:

@theruckshow @Rebel_Army With the @MelbourneRebels being privately owned, do you have to adhere to the Salary Cap like the other 4 AU teams?

Response:
Technically no, not under the current EBA. In reality, yes, because as soon as a new EBA comes in we'll be subject.

That was the Rebel Army account who answered that, not the Rebels themselves, so be careful as they may not know the full situation.

I know as I answered the tweet :p

As much as I enjoy this thread, how is QLD gonna react if Cooper signs with the Tahs.

Player movement is just fact these days, it's gonna happen, gotta roll with it, supporting the jersey not the player is a permanent factor of professional sport.

Also the negativity against the rebels is pretty uncalled for, NSW lost Beale to them last year, the force lost OConnor, both those players were far more important to there franchises than Higgers is. Time moves on, opportunities arise from it. Delve leaving, Higgers moving provides another Australian with the chance to play full time starting supeRugby and in the long term it's good for the game.

P.s. The rebels being strong in Australia's 2nd largest city is a good thing for the game and it's finances at an ARU level, as much as we all want our teams to win, rugby wins by the rebels exposing rugby in a positive way to as many people as possible.

We Reds' fans are pleased to receive the kindly philosophical advice re the calm and considered manner by which we should accept the departure of a (supposedly) $ motivated Higgers to bleak city... but am I right in recalling...

...when KB (Kurtley Beale) was similarly poached with Rebels' currently uncapped funds, there were endless GAGR Tahs posts attacking or close KB (Kurtley Beale) for 'seeking big $s and betraying loyalty to the team that supported his development'. I can't readily recall a long line of 'calm and philosophical' Tahs posters accepting it was 'all in the game' and 'thank goodness for salary caps' and 'let's just move on'.

And, whatever the historical circumstances, there can be little doubt that the 2012 Tahs have missed KB (Kurtley Beale).

But we are building a 5 team network for the long term. The Force's progression and its reliance upon local imports highlights the importance of that long term thinking.

Congrats Higgers and Rebels, hope your union sees both of you soar to new heights! For the reds, Eddie Quirck is ready for an embiggening off season and lots of starts. It's all good.

In my mind that says it all really. The ARU is treading down a dangerous path allowing this team to be ripped apart.

They need to build the rebels and force from the ground up. Make sure they have their own academies and top level coaches.
I wish higgers and rebels all the best for next season and beyond.

Uhhh... not really.

Have a look for yourself at the 'Beale to the Rebels' thread.

All seem pretty calm and rational to me, not many attacks on Kurtley, the Rebels or the ARU. Just a bit of general annoyance a good player is leaving. Which is fine IMO, unlike some posts on this thread.

I'm not going to lie, its rather embarrassing when people refer to "us Reds fans" as a collective group..

Never happy to see a good player leave, but I'm not going to get upset about it..
