What do you mean? There is every chance that Schalk Burger will be the next Springbok captain.
Correct. Being a filthy player like Burger does not exclude him from being the Springbok captain. Corne Krige was a 24 carat dirty nutter. It's a pity that Burger is like that on the field because he is apparently a great bloke off it. They say much the same about Richard Loe, also an eye gouger, amongst other things.
I said Burger is filthy because he has been suspended for eye gouging before and the touch judge who reported it to referee Berdos should have said "red card" when asked his opinion of the sanction when the Boks played the Lions. Instead he said: "At least a yellow." The TJ was B.Lawrence. Were it not for that you could give him the benefit of the doubt on Sunday - but not any more.
What his right hand was doing raking across Pocock's face looked literally criminal. To anybody who queries "Are you sure he was eye gouging?", as they do, I would answer that "I'm sure he was raking his face and that is very close to where his eyes are."
SAffer journalists can whinge to the cows come about the illegalities that Pocock wrought at the ruck, but they won't mention this incident unless Burger is cited, and then they will discount it.
Not quite to the point but they won't mention either that when the Aussies defeated the Boks in Durban when B.L. had the whistle it was like Rafferty's Rules at the ruck and the Aussies expected the same in Wellington and they were right and played to it. The Boks didn't, and even though the excellent Brussouw went off after 20 minutes they should have done their homework knowing how weak B.L. is at ruck time and contested accordingly.
IIRR B.L. didn't even penalise Burger in that incident notwithstanding that he was offside after his first effort as he should have got up and returned to last feet after he went to ground. And/or he should have been pinged for being on the ground and grabbing an opponent.
Even Rodney So'oialo, the arch loiter in opponent's space, would have gasped at the audacity of what Burger did, and I'm not talking about his fingers.
