Maybe the second fastest forward, but definitely not second fastest in the squad.

I am pretty sure I heard he was the second fastest in the Brumbies squad in an interview with someone from the Brumbies as well. I am not sure what distance that was over.

I think he was a schoolboy athlete at St Pius.

I did some digging, in the Australian in said hooper was the 2nd fastest over 40m in the squad, Robbie Coleman is 1st. Hoopers time was quoted as 4.79, thats very fast for a forward. Apparently he was a junior NSW gold medalist beach sprint champion.

When I was at school, former Wallaby prop Andrew 'Ox' Heath was my rugby coach in the under 16s.

He used to claim that he was the second fastest in the Wallabies over 10m. Or maybe it was only over 5m. He claimed he had very good accelaration and reaction times.

Good piece up there about Gerrard but can't agree with all of it. I said for quite a time that Gerrard should be in any Wallaby squad to be trundled out if there is a test to be played in bad weather or ground conditions because of his long raking accurate kick and good rugby brain.

The reason why he is no longer playing for the Wallabies is that he is too slow. He can make it into position at fullback quite well because of his experience, but at the top level his lack of pace would be a problem against fast finishing wingers.

On attack his rugby brain masks his slowness as he helps faster team mates to finish the job but some opportunities have to be forgone because he can be run down.

He was found out in his last test match, in the loss against Samoa last year, though he wasn't the Lone Ranger that day.

I've seen him play since he was a nipper and he's always had a speed problem, even being embarrassed at club level many a time for my team, The Rats. His best position skill wise was always at 15 but factoring in his pace I always thought he would have been better as an outside centre.

He may not have the speed, but he has always had the ability to carry a ball into a tackle and continue leg drive so that he either breaks out of the first tackle or is still on his feet when the support arrives. Something that many wingers and fullbacks either forget or don't try. Davies case in point.....

But you are right LG, as you frequently are, that maybe he would be a better fit as an outside centre. Would be interesting to see how he would go now at 13 for the Wallabies. Dream - 9 Genia 10 QC (Quade Cooper) 11 Diggers 12 JOC (James O'Connor) 13 Gerrard 14 AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) 15 Beale. Any takers?

Gerrardo won that match for the Rebels against the Brumbies in Melbourne last year with his field kicking. It was also his first match with the team and I think it was the first week he had been there.

However, a lot is different since then and this match could be anything like most games in the Australian conference this year.

Looking forward to see how Murphy goes in that front row...

Haven't thought highly of Alexanders scrummaging this year... Although he did get the better of Slipper last week...

Always thought Kuridrani was an out and out winger...have never seen him play 13 at club...

Ben Alexander and Andrew Smith on the bench is an interesting selection.

Is this part of a rotation policy?

I was doing some sprint testing for some young athletes (all fast but not many were trained sprinters) the other week and honestly their final times were almost entirely dependent on the crispness of their starts rather than their speed.

Many didn't have good reaction time and many had weird starting technique. I think a running start would have been better but we didn't do that because it isn't exactly rugby relevant.

Interesting move in putting Saffy to 7 and Lipman to the bench.

Maybe Damien Hill has started reading Lipman's tweets and has demoted him as a result.

Interesting move. Rebels have the stronger back line, but a full strength Brumbies pack could have put this to bed at half-time.

Instead, you're just leaving the door open.

Could be rotation/resting. Remember he returned from a back injury, and lack of other flankers, could spell another positional crisis.
