It's hard to read too much into these kinds of games.......

The Brumbies didn't play any of their Wallabies, while the Highlanders had a full strength side in the second half........

And apparently the Brumbies opted against penalties in the second half to focus on set plays...........

In the end it's just about testing combinations, plays, making sure guys get some proper contact before the season proper..........

Personally, I'd like to know if any of the Canberra locals got a run and how they went?

Also the performances from our new recruits, including our new Japanese player?

One of the benefits of the new NRC will be that these kinds of players get a platform to show their worth........

Can anybody tell me what Mark Swanepoel is up to this year? Where is he playing?

Based on this if the highlanders played a strong squad in the second half and we played a side without Pocock and McCabe and EOYT players not taking part then it is a good result. Sounds like Brumbies defence will again be a feature and we may have reasonable depth in the squad in this respect. The Times reporting that discipline was a problem I hope there is not a perception building from previous comments in the minds of officials

Highlanders weren't full strength second half apparently, Ben Smith and Aaron Smith for starters didn't play according to the NZ match reports.

Slim is right when he says not much can be read into these pre-season trials.

Hope he goes well. But this:

"He left Exeter in 2011 to join the Canberra-based Brumbies to try and force his way into the Australian set-up, however he was left frustrated by the International Rugby Board’s residency rules which stated he needed to live in the country for three years prior to being capped."

..... is rose-coloured IMO. Don't think he was in the frame.

Coming back from a mid season ACL and didn't Scott Sio zoom ahead of Murphy and now the Smith twins and we do have to make room for Allan Ala'alatoa. That is three changes with Ita Vaea and Ben Mowen. In our great years we regularly turned over 7 players from rookies to veterans in a season.

Realistically, I'd say that Sio, Alexander and R Smith are ahead of Murphy, with Ala'alatoa the development player so he will be given time in small games ahead of Murphy too.

Bernie to become the first head coach/waterboy:

International rugby rules ban him from being on the field, but ACT Brumbies mentor Stephen Larkham will use a loophole to become the first Super Rugby head coach to double as a waterboy.

Super Rugby's governing body SANZAR has cleared Larkham to become the most high-profile waterboy since Adam Sandler played Bobby Boucher in the 1998 Hollywood hit.
International Rugby Board protocols dictate head coaches are not allowed to run the water.

But because Laurie Fisher is the Brumbies' director of rugby, SANZAR has cleared Larkham to be on the field while Fisher is in the coach's box.

Well, there you have it.

Bernie Boucher, The Waterboy.

Now where's someone who's good with Photoshop?

Bernie to become the first head coach/waterboy:

The lengths people are going to get around the prohibition for senior coaches to be coaching on the field is getting pretty ludicrous. The coaching staff are supposed to do their job during the week and at oranges. Having them run on at every breakdown just to give someone a rev-up or advise them where to run is ridiculous. Are the players so dumb these days that they can't work anything out for themselves?

IMO it demeans the role of a coach at this level. When I coached under-10's they wouldn't let me do it.
