Surely Moore is the shoo in for the captaincy. Current Wallaby, experienced player, plays in a key position and will be first selected in his position. It's a no-brainer.

Doesn't make him a leader, OR a good captain. We shall see, but i'm against selecting people on "Current Wallaby, experienced player, plays in a key position and will be first selected in his position" as a basis.

Do you really want your captain being someone who isn't ruthless and gives the opposition free points? :fishing

I agree. Who do you think should be captain? When you look at the playing stocks, it's Moore and daylight second. Runners up could be Lilo or Alexander.

These are surely attributes you would like to see in your captain? What attributes/skills would you like to see the Brumbies 2012 Captain possess?

Frankly I’m happy with whoever Jake White chooses, it’s the present that counts now, and captaincy should never be given out for only club loyalty, there are many other more important attributes a good captain requires to lead a success team.

Five Positive attributes of a Leader based on Sun Tzu “Art of War”…

1. The confidence of the Coach/Coaches/CEO;
2. The ability to coordinate various tactical groups;
3. The ability to capture the hearts of their team;
4. The ability to hold the hearts of their team;
5. The ability to know their competition;

Five dangerous faults which may affect a Leaders success…

1. Recklessness, which leads to failure;
2. Cowardice, which leads to indecisiveness;
3. A hasty temper, which can be provoked;
4. A fragile honour which is sensitive to shame;
5. Over-solicitude for his men, which exposes him to worry with less commitment to win

Ben Mowen may be a very good choice if team dynamics (feng shui) work with him… I'm not convinced about the established Brumbies players leadership skills... They may be fine players in their specialist position and passionate , but thats not enough to be the best leader for the team...

He leads from the front and has the respect of his peers. Not a bad start me thinks. Mowen also fits this bill and if White goes with him I dare say it will be part of his reform agenda clearing away those potentially tainted by the old guard. My personal opinion is Moore is the man the Brumbies need at the helm.

I've got no dramas with Mowen, he's got the skills to be a leader. My first pick would be Moore, with Lilo as VC. It'll be interesting to see who Jake appoints.

Looks like things have turned the corner and the community is getting behind the Brumbies. Clearly the vibe in this thread is positive. The Brumbies could be a real dark horse (no pun intended) this season and only a fool would take them lightly.

Just another reason to be excited about the upcomming season.

Oh dont get me wrong, i'm not slating him.

I've just never seen him do anything that made me think "captain material".

Pocock runs around on the field like a General, and everytime there's a break, he drags everyone in and starts directing them. Mortlock, when there's a break, automatically gets the attention of all the players.

I just dont really see that in Moore, and a good TEAM, always has a true leader, otherwise they're just a bunch of rugby players with a designated 'person who can tell Alain Rolland he's a dick".

Captain is a a big issue for us next year, and a very, very important one.

I dont see a problem with Mowen being named Captain if he is indeed a better suit then Moore which im not sure he is. But this year the Brumbies is all about a "fresh start" so I have no problem with naming a Captain who is new to the club. That being said, before I read this thread, I automatically assumed Moore would be named Captain and from my personal experience, the first thought is usually the right one. So im picking Moore, Might not be the best leader but he's the best we got and I'm sure he won't let us down.

The telegraph is mischeviously reporting that Jake White will not be deserting the Brumbies to coach England.

White, who masterminded South Africa's World Cup triumph in 2007, has been linked to the England position ever since Martin Johnson's resignation in the wake of his side's controversial World Cup in New Zealand last month.

White, 48, has even dropped a hint, through the media, that he would welcome an approach to succeed Johnson as England coach.

He said: "I'm sure if an opportunity came about, it's something I'd like to do again."

I read that one the other day...

I'm sure before the start of the season White will also be linked to the All Blacks coaching job amongst others...

Yup, one day they report he's going and the next day the "staff writers" call it off, based on the same interview where White was simply polite.

Mowen could if he is unlucky end up one of those players that are always solid at Super rugby level but never really crack it at test level. David Croft springs to mind as a perfect example but they are much, much more common (and useful) in the European leagues that often keep running whilst the test players are away.

Whether you think this kind of player is a good leader or not is up to you (it's certainly open to debate) but I would suggest that someone that hasn't had higher honors and isn't a club stalwart has two strikes against their name when it comes to getting the "(c)", at least for the 2012 season.

I think Mowen, like Mitchell Chapman has been unlucky not to have received a test cap ...

Rewind back to the 2009 season and both had blinders, but were edged out at the time by Mumm and Kimlin...

And then Elsom returned late in the year after being the standout of the HEC...

Personally, I wouldn't quite rule out Mowen just yet for higher honours.

The Wallabies appear to have a number of candidates for the 6/8 position, but I wouldn't guarantee any of them a spot for the future.

Edit: However, being in his late 20's probably makes it very difficult to crack the Wallaby team with Deans as coach...

Tim Gavel has just tweeted that Stephen Hoiles is to be granted a release from the final year of his contract due to his Achilles injury.

Those guys are all good leaders and have obviously got what it takes to lead from the front. I've never seen Moore as that sort of player, but he is a solid performer, and is a senior member in the squad.

Mowen is in the same boat (even if he is the new boy) as Moore as they are both of a similar age and will play a significant role in the team in 2012.

Lilo has led before at a lower level, but he's never come across to me as a standout, consistent player at Super Rugby level which I think is an important factor in selecting your captain.

Jake White will hopefully make a decision based on how these guys perform during the off-season/pre-season sessions and see who stacks up. There's plenty of time to make a decision, so we'll see what comes out in the wash.

Some players just get unlucky to have a log jam for for Wallaby honors in their position. Crofty is one of these as he, Smith and Waugh were all international standard, though Smith was truly something special. Mitch Chapman also fits this bill for mine. He would have to have been one of the most underated players going around. Mowen if very similar to Chapman in what he brings to the game. He has something to offer and I wish him all the best in his quest for that Wallaby Jersey.
