but there were some very serious defensive errors and continued poor selections. But I do agree there is a base to work from but there is real need to make some changes.

Oh definitely. Deans should make some slight adjustments to this side I would like to see Turner for Mitchell (Re: Rugby Reg on Hong Kong Phooey) Barnes for Giteau & someone for Chisolm but not Mumm I want him off the bench.

I would rather Turner for JOC (James O'Connor). JOC (James O'Connor) is not a winger. He is amazing in traffic and he made that scintillating break running from 12. As for Chisholm here we see the poor selection of the 36 man squad. I would have liked to see Douglas instead of Chiholm but against Wales I will be happy to see Van get the nod to start or at least be on the bench ahead of Chis.

We just nearly lost another Test match to an All Blacks side in the worst form they've had all year. Drew Mitchell got stood up by Kieran Reid that nearly cost us a try, but you'd pick him ahead of Rod Davies. Mark Chisholm, as usual, barely featured in the game except to let Ma'a Nonu straight through and drop an uncontested lineout ball in the last quarter. But you'd overlook the hardest working lock in Aus rugby, Van Humphries.

I do respect the need for consistency, but if you don't drop bad players in favour of better ones you can't improve a team.

I respect your cynical criticism, Newt, but Mitchell's second effort after that created a turnover, he made other crucial tackles and scored a bonza try. Jizz was fairly ordinary (although you've picked on his only lineout error), but Van hasn't proved himself up to this level - let him perform in the tour games first.

The more consistent and persistent issues are Matt Giteau and JOC (James O'Connor). Gits was ordinary and should be dropped in favour of a better form player, and JOC (James O'Connor)...well he did some ordinary things but tbh we all have some egg on our faces. I'd personally still drop him to the bench next week but no denying he was outstanding in attack, against tired legs.

I am not the biggest Chisholm fan but he had a great night at the defensive lineout, which really disrupted the ABs. I don't understand the obsession with Turner.

I agree about Turner. It's sickening to hear the constant push for him. But Chis? No, no, no.

He's a really fucking good winger. See Bled III or pretty much any Tahs game in the last couplea years.

Indeed.

Thank f*ck our selectors aren't mired in the dopey provincialism of Australian rugby fans. Half the people that post here only seem to see players from their own Super 14 team.

Super 14?!? It's like picking players because they shop in your f*cking supermarket.

Who was the lock behind Robinson at scrumtime? I thought Alexander would be the weak link but it was Fat Cat who got pounded. Wasn't expecting that.

I would like to take this opportunity to point out that everyone who plays for the Wallabies plays or has played for the Reds or has lived in Queensland at some point during their rugby development. Therefore, I hold no bias about any players I talk about because Queensland ties are not affected by Super14 tribalism.

Folks we should not talk about players who have played bugger all significant rugby in a long time - or in some cases, any rugby.

Thus the comments implying in some posts from time to time in this thread that the likes of Van, Hodgson, Davies, Higginbotham and Hynes should be used in big games straight off can't be taken seriously.

Happy 3000th post Lee. Celebrate it with a Wobs victory over the Darkness.

Nah, our selectors prefer to select players by how big their pay cheque is, you know, to warrant why they pay certain players so much...Giteau

Plus, I reckon by about 5 minutes before RWC11 Robbie will have worked out that JOC (James O'Connor) is a 12, Giteau is poison, Turner should be in the side, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) is not a fullback, etc, that most of us worked out 2 years ago.

HAha very true Scarfy.

On Giteau - it's interesting that Beale and now J'OC have won games for the Wallabies to rocket them into Wallaby legend status - in the same mold Mortlock, Larkham, and Gregan did early in their careers - yet Giteau has never really had that impact on a game. The closest I can recall is him kicking all the points for the Wallabies over a rubbish England in 2004 at a Twickers; dire, slow game that was.

Nice to see us not playing particularly well and winning.

Positives
Lineout
1st phase attack

Negatives
Scrum
1st up tackling

Cooper had one of those games, he just tried too hard to do the "special play"
