From Hong Kong Stadium:

Finally stopped drinking piss and can make a few cogent comments at this end (eh, maybe).

The venue was very organised and controlled (loads of security staff). The pitch was in terrific condition and didn't break up at all during the match.

You didn't have to wait hours for a drink or a feed - maybe that had something to do with the numbers?

Crowd was mainly visitors like us or ex-pats incl lots of Poms but I’d say about 15% chinese.

Pre-match entertainment incl a chinese Beatles tribute band – and they were good if you were of a certain age (even threw up some Abba numbers).

No mid strength piss here – Stella Artois was the match beer and was available in jugs.

You couldn’t take your plonk from the concourse into the stands, well, you could if you put it into a large coke container….

The match amosphere for a crowd of about 25,000 was fantastic. Loads of interaction with strangers in green and gold clothing of all sorts. I thought the crowd was just great.

And there were more Wallaby jumpers in the crowd than ABs.

The game itself – I texted Juan Cote with 20 mins to go and said we’re gone. To his credit he kept the faith and said no, the Wobblies will win – and he was right.

Wasn’t as pretty as it could have been but we were the better team and in the end deserved the win. Step 1 – 6 to go.

As far as some of you wonks on this thread who can't stop whinging - well, we beat the best team in the world tonight for the first time since 2008. Stop whinging and rejoice.

Happy 3000th post Lee. Celebrate it with a Wobs victory over the Darkness.

I must claim a small part of the victory. I was wearing the same Rivers red undies I wore to the NRL Grand Final as a good luck charm and it worked for the Dragons. I was in the study and unlike at Homebush I wasn't wearing any pants just to increase the charm of luck of the underpants.

That victory was as full of holes as Meade's at Gettysburg but let us hope it has a similar effect on the struggle. I'll leave discussing the shortcomings for a few days but the Wales gurus will already be picking over the bones of our many deficiencies.

Well done boys - you did us proud.

Thanks for the horse's mouth report....It's a beaut place to visit...

Still, I noticed in the TV coverage that the pitch was breaking up a bit and the commentators remarked on that...

After 20 wife beaters (Stellas) the pitch looked fucking great by the sound of things!

For the naysayers - here's the thing; yep there were deficiencies but even with them we deservedly beat the #1 team - which many Kiwis are describing as one of the best ever and the ranking points would agree - in the world.

Don't give me any "they weren't on form" bullshit. They were nigh on a world record winning streak - how the fuck is that not on form?!?

This young Wallaby team can put together patches of attacking play that NO TEAM can live with. It's not based of pre-formed set pieces, or religiously drilled in formulas, it's based on natural footballing ability brought to the fore in players like Pocock, Beale, O'Connor and the Coopers.

What's missing is what I want to call "the glue". The bits that string those together - the set piece, re-starts, crunch kicks, key tackles. But bit by infuriatingly slow bit, that glue is coming together, although not as fast as the brilliant attacking chunks have evolved.

Should they knit it all together and apply the glue - and there's no guarantee they will - this will be the most electric and successful Wallabies team, and remain so for a long time.

First win on the veldt for 40 odd years, breaking the ABs winning streak (in what should have been the last 2 matches), the young freak talents coming to the fore to win games.

It's all bubbling along nicely

It wasn't the best they have played this year. In fact they have looked better in at least 2, maybe 3, tests.
But it was the belief and the young blokes who stood up when the Blackness scored their last try. In the past we would have rolled over and let them in for a couple more.
Beale, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), Alexander, Slipper, Pocock, McCalman, Mitchell, Burgess.........and of course the ice man James O'Connor.

There were some less than excellent performances but I reckon these blokes took a very big step up today.
Well done to all 22!!
Enjoy it.

Who was the lock behind Robinson at scrumtime? I thought Alexander would be the weak link but it was Fat Cat who got pounded. Wasn't expecting that.

Yes, but did you notice Slipper destroyed Franks as soon as he came on and the latter was substituted a few moments after his second pummeling?
Robinson is not up to scratch for some reason?? And Slipper is infinitely better at LH as opposed to TH.

Yeh slipper scrummaged well, not sure and I might be insulting the front row union but i think looseheads tend to be less destructive at scrum time than tightheads can be. I always thought of looseheads as stabilisers in the scrum,

JOC (James O'Connor) is 2 out of 3 in terms of clutch kicks. I wonder how gutted he would have been to have missed that kick,
1- Kick against churchie 2007 35 out 15 in missed
2- Kick against IGS 2007 25 out 5 in on target
3- Kick against NZ 2010 25 out 15 in on target

Great to win against the All Blacks under any circumstances. It has been far too long coming - and it wasn't even our best performance!

I agree with Gagger that when this Wallaby team is on song in attack no one can live with them.

Beale was immense in attack and defence. He sparked the final charge. The way he brings in others is amazing. His pace is not deceptive, it is damn fast.

Pocock - I'm amazed how he gets around the park so fast with balls that huge.

On the other hand:

-I'm not going to pretend there aren't some big issues to deal with.
-The All Blacks had us cold and Donald fucked it up twice.

There are a few problems that I think can and will be fixed:

-The two Ben/ns are short of something, especially Benn. When they are in form they can match any international front row, if not always dominate.
-TPN will return and take the front row power up a notch (although Moore played fine, no, very well, he doesn't have that extra something)
-Chiz did a lot of good stuff, but he too could up it a bit. In time there will be more competition for the starting spot next next to Sharpie.
-McCalman did well (considering his youth), but Palu coming back in will add a lot of the power and mongrel we still need.
-Genia is not at his best again, but was still good, plus Burgess is an able standby
-JO'C. Kicks can win matches. He is still not one of our best two wingers. He is worth a shot at 12.

There are a couple of more difficult issues:

-Giteau is not allowed to be dropped
-COOPER. His defence is piss poor. He is prone to brain farts. He can be brilliant in attack. The Wallabies cannot get away with his defensive frailty in the long term. His defensive performance was the worst I can remember by a Wallaby. Dan Carter is safe as the number one flyhalf in world rugby.

JOC (James O'Connor) kicked great, but I wouldn't be surprised if Barnes was still our best kicker.

As you said last night, Langthorne, JOC (James O'Connor) to 12, Turner to wing, problem solved. I also wonder if we are not better off starting with Barnes for the traditional softening up period then bring on Cooper to win the game.

Thought McCalman was poor whenever I noticed him. Rocky has pretty much lost his international-class running game, so we need Palu back more than any other player.

The only guy I could see pushing Cooper out of 5/8 is To'omua. Looks to be the most promising of the 5/8s and is good in defence. The other options negatives outweigh Cooper's poor d.

Atm, I'd say we need Horwill/Vickerman back the most. Chis is really poor, he's probably the biggest in world rugby and also the softest. The rest of our injured players have suitable replacements but we're short of a lock atm.

I sort of agree with aussie1st, however i think barnes could do a job at 10 like he did in 07, To'omua looked really good last year and ran the backline at the brumbies before he got injured,

Hopefully with the aussie teams playing each other twice the coaches may be able to more easily identify which players outperform others

McCalman didn't seem to do much although I think he did fairly well at the base of the scrum because it was pretty messy at times and he dealt with it. Horwill will replace Chis when he returns, good thing sharpie became awesome this year

I didn't think McCalman was too bad, but needs to focus the effort in defence more, as opposed to Quade who just can't / won't tackle. I like the energy and mongrel he brings, and is worth persisting with. Obviously Palu would be a huge return to have.

Well done Australia. A win is a win, enjoy the moment. Some exciting running from your backline, particularly the back three. They certainly carved us up at times. The pain isn't too great over here. In a way it's a monkey off both teams backs. Most of the comments here are of the '' we told you so Henry''type, referring of course to Donald's selection. Being our national game everyone has an opinion, and his selection was heavily criticised when the team was announced.
The ref was a pain at scrum time, and given that the surface was a bit dodgy he could have perhaps given both front rows a bit more latitude. I thought Barnes stiffened up the midfield when he came on,why does he not start?

I'd say 90% of the people on here want Barnes or JO'C instead of Gits at 12. I doubt Deans will drop Giteau though
