Professional sport is no longer about motivation and riotous outbreaks of passion. Anyone who is a pro athlete has passion and wants to win, and they wouldn't be able to get there and do the job without it. Being a pro athlete is actually a shit job, you do the same monotonous tasks for most of the year.

The team that wins is the team that's full of professionals, hence the name professional sport. That means the team that works the hardest in the gym, sticks to its diets the best, doesn't drink too much on weekends, or at all. It's the team that takes every training seriously and listens attentively to the coach and has honest conversations internally about what works and what doesn't.

This sounds cliche but it is just true. It's also much easier said than done. Try not drinking alcohol for an entire season, or avoiding christmas ham. THen try doing it every year, all for the potential of one bit of euphoria when you lift the trophy.

Motivation is important as is team spirit, but they are not the means to the end of winning rather one of many elements to the success of a pro sport team. What does a coach even do to motivate a team? Yell at them? Coddle them? Give them huge speeches pre game. I'm sure any coach that soap boxed for ages before every game would come to be regarded as a bit of a joke.

We need coaches that fit this mould

Fuck are we really considering Alan Jones? I don't care how bad the Wallabies are - we are better than turning to a xenophobic, sexist, blinkered dinosaur. Whatever success he can bring is completely undermined by the message his appointment would send.

Let alone the players (and fans) who'd walk away from Gold if he was HC.

He'd be sacked for saying something offensive within weeks anyway.

And a Wallaby coach is expected to go out and get involved in kids coaching clinics, so, um......... yeah...........

I don't need to say it......... we all know the history.

I actually think they should and will stick with Cheika. (and the assistants)

I would hate them to sack Cheika and appoint White only because he is the only available option.

If they are hell bent on change and sacking Cheika, then Jones IMO would be a good stop gap to get us to the World Cup.

The Parrot's day has come and gone. When he was appointed Wallaby coach, he was in a position to put a lot of time and I would imagine money into the job.

Way back then the game was amateur in every sense, here in Australia. Players either had jobs, or were genuinely students.

Jones was willing and able to do a lot of work with the players on and off the training paddock, which was pretty radical in those days.

Those days are nothing like these days. To say that he is "yesterday's man" is a bit kind. He is last century's man, in every sense. Well, most senses.

Anyone that’s observed Alan’s behaviour over the last 2 years would almost swear he was about to slip into a permanent state of dementia. That’s before even considering his disastrous record as a “coach” and the off-field incidents that have plagued him for the last 30 years. There is no way in the world Raelene will even consider Alan as a candidate - she would sooner laugh In his face. I couldn’t believe his thinly veiled sexist ranting this year.

do our assistants actually NEED to be fulltime assistant coaches for the wallabies? I don't know the answer for this but if not.....Why not have a fulltime head coach then super rugby coaches as assistants, i know its been semi-done before but didn'tstick with it

Gibson - attack
Thorn - forwards
Wessels - defence

This means there's a pathway to international setup for super coaches, and while this may impact super sides a bit it means more development opportunities for assistant coaches of super sides, creating development opportunities and a pathway of sorts from assistant super coach through to wallabies head coach

I’m not sure his singular success in rugby a lifetime ago, and this alleged intelligence really makes up for the long list of horrible qualities he possesses...

So no, he should be completely ignored if RA want to hang onto any shred of credibility.

Any opinion he spews up is likely built on a foundation of lies, poor research misinterpreted, more lies, fake statistics, and prejudices.

Rather than just blag, tell me a plan or contribution you have made or anyone else here for that matter that is better than this ad jock plan earlier in the year?

Also, Chinese whispers, I am not suggesting he coach I am suggesting RA could do worse than to listen to some of his ideas.

It's easy to shoot off thought bubbles when you know there's sweet FA chance of anything you suggest of actually happening. We all do it. But I can for one thing categorically state that if Jones were appointed. That would end my interest in the game here (at the very least involving the game in relation to anything under the auspices of RA) in this country. The character of the man is so repugnant that it would be the end for me.

I'm a dual Irish citizen by birthright but am born and raised here and while holding Ireland as my 2nd international side I have never backed them against the Wallabies but if Jones were at the helm that would change.

Some of those ideas aren't terrible. The dumping of the NRC is a no go in my opinion. The club seasons are long enough as they are. If they want longer they can start earlier. If anything the NRC needs to be further developed and resourced not abolished.

The free camps are nice in theory but I've always kind of thought we are wasting key resources in regard to not having players acting as DO's for the game. Honestly, I think part of every full time contract should be the participation in a Sports Dev. qualification and then every member of each squad being assigned to a region within the city and state.

There's been attempts to get a National Coaching Panel set up but some far that's been stonewalled by certain groups. I'm not against hiring from outside to oversee such a structure. Joe Schmidt will be free post Japan.

Schools. Good luck with any of that.

As for the rest. The academy structure is slowly creeping back. Apart from that it's mostly fluff.

I’m sure JW is not off the table. They just balked with their mitt in the lolly jar.
RA will arrange a secret meeting, as if they are doing something wrong. They may have already had a chat.

Jake White is the one.

So far I have contributed more to the game by not publishing such rubbish in any newspaper.........

Dump the NRC? "Drain the swamp"......... Faaaaark off.........

The core of Jones' point about returning to the clubs goes to the same anti centralisation, pro individual club and community feel. I really like it in theory, and almost all sport has started off like that and grown from it.

But the reality is that globalisation has pulled all that to pieces - and the only way we are going to get talent to the highest levels is by some degree of centralisation. This is evidence by Ireland's centralised system for player talent.

It's pretty sad, because individual clubs and communities have been the core of rugby in the past, but there's evidence they just struggle to attract the level of support, interest and by extension the athletes not to have that process of development taken off them and centralised.

It's really just Jones regurgitating the same old populist ideas that's going to appeal to his target audience, but in reality he has no new or well thought out ideas on how to actually fix the game............

And anyone who mutters the phrase "drain the swamp" should be catapulted into the sea......... even Donald Trump is on record as saying that it's a dumb slogan that he doesn't even believe in.

Latest news is that Cheika will be doing the rounds of the Super sides next week ostensibly to sell them his Plan and lay out some ideas/rules about resting players in the lead up to the RWC. I have an uneasy feeling the real reason might be to recruit the current Super Rugby coaches into the Wallabies setup in some fashion or other.

I can't, for the life of me, understand why RA would send him on this jaunt if he isn't going to continue on, and he might just be under instruction to get a new assistant coaching team in place before the Dec 10 meeting.

Jones is a brilliant motivator, and tends to get great performances out of players.

If you think like me, that is we actually have very good players and a good team. They are just not playing well. Then Jones could be the answer.

I see he been suggesting Johnson. So that pair together could be good. Johnson knows the modern game better than Jones.

It all comes down to weather they want real change or not. Jones will deliver change.
Setting aside the abhorrent Jones idea (seriously, who actually thinks someone who hasn't coached in 30 years would be any good?) the idea that we need another motivator is ridonkulous.

That's literally all Cheika brings to the table. He motivates. He's loyal, his players like him and they all break their backs for him.

It's long term strategic thinking and short term tactical thinking that's missing. We have no game plan to execute and we still manage to execute nothing poorly.

Side note: I think you have to be pretty fucking stupid to find yourself on the wrong end of a 4 million dollar law suit. Whoever thinks RA, rife with image problems, are ever going to hire Jones needs to stop smoking the crack rock.
