Surely we will see McCabe back to 12 next week in true Deans form?

Barnes was a good selection over Harris, but everything else that Deans has got right on that front is due to injury:

Tapuai vs McCabe
Cummins vs Mitchell or Shipperly

And there is still plenty wrong

Tpn left on the field when Moore is waiting on the bench.
Mitchell coming on for no apparent reason except to risk injury.
The continued 80mins of game time given to phipps.

The last is grounds for dismissal for deans.

I know I say this every time. But fuck me Phipps is a liability. His double pump inaccurate spray pass must be almost impossible for a 5/8. Beale deserves massive respect for getting his hands on a lot of those (but no respect for playing too deep, crabbing, and being limp in defence)

Very soon people will start picking up intercepts, they were there to be taken last night.

Harsh. He played with passion for the jersey and the team. A little Aussie Battler. You have to love that.
I was referencing a recently departed poster, who insisted he was atrocious. I certainly don't think so.

Not with a fractured neck I would have thought.

I was going to say this last night but was too tired. The amount of times I was screaming at the telly for him to pass the fucking ball properly would have numbered in the dozens I reckon. I'm sure he's trying his guts out and his ball to the HB for his try was great, but he's not at the required standard right now.

Lets be honest here, England are pretty shit. We were well deserved winners but the opposition let themelves down pretty badly with handling errors at crucial times.
A more appropriate time for that call would have been before the game, Charger. I thought it was a solid display by the Wallabies and a well contested game. I for one was surprised by how well our scrum went. Perhaps that was because England are deficient in that department, but I didn't read any suggestion of that in the lead up to the game.

A glimmer of light last night but it would not surprise if the flame flickers and dies. Let's hope not.

At first glance it appeared as it Robshaw had been called away to do a post game interview, but second watching showed that this was not the case. It appears to be a deliberate snub.

Another reading could be that the Captain's may have already shaken previously, and then Robshaw decided to employ the one handshake rule.

Not the behaviour I would expect from a Captain of any rugby team - Under 6's to International.

It matters not, how tired or disappointed one is, one does not behave like that after Sir has blown the Acme Thunderer for the last time.
Please leave the ref's sexual antics out of it HJ.

We won. We beat the Poms and frankly, that is all I care about.

Cummins, take a bow mate.

England, nice uniform. Rugby royal purple, huh? Looks even better with humble pie and the Aussie tight 5 imprint smeared all over it.

Hey, I just realised, watching you trot back to the sheds on your chariot is low for you and sweet for me. What a great song!

By all means talk yourselves up before our next game. I can do this all day.

I thought we left a fair few points out there - we could have scored a few more tries but blew it at the last moment, or simply failed to spread it wide when we had numbers. Also, why were we aimlessly kicking the ball away in the last period of the game?

What was satisfying - our backs looked dangerous. I think Tapuai made a difference, Barnes was very good, and the Honey Badger rips in without fail every game. AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) I thought was good in defence, but I think he can often limit our attack as he just does not pass. Also, our forwards. The Poms sitting around me were giving it to me before the game about how our scrum was going to get annihilated. They went pretty quiet during the game. It was the first time I can ever remember being excited whenever there was a scrum, at least until Robinson went off and it starting going to shit. We were also much better in defence - plenty of big, aggressive hits right across the park.

But the highlight was the shifting mood in the crowd. Slowly but surely all the pre-game smugness and derision around me turned to hushed conversations about the referee favouring Australia, and then finally, all out abuse of their own players. But of course, no credit given to the Wallabies.

Seeing hundreds of Poms getting up to leave well before the final whistle was the icing on the cake.

I agree with (almost) everything everyone has posted in recent times about our shortcomings but the way we played against England is why I love this team!

The pack was immense - particularly the front row. And Palu. Well done fellas. Cummins, Barnes and Taps brilliant. Two-Dads never lets us down. I can forgive the odd poor game if we lift for this fixture. Bravo! (oh, but continued work on the restarts please)

Player ratings from the Telegraph UK:

By Paul Ackford
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/ru...85529/England-v-Australia-player-ratings.html

Fairly accurate.

England
Alex Goode
Not nearly as effective up against a well-organised, tight defence. He will come again but he now knows what he is up against. 6/10
Charlie Sharples
Tested defensively by Nick Cummins and failed to make a conclusive break himself. Proved that pace is not everything at this level. 4
Tom Youngs
Youngs Allowed Michael Hooper to run over him but his lineout work was solid. Part of a front row which was in regular trouble. 3
Tom Johnson
Good hands in the build-up to Tuilagi’s score but could not match the physicality of the Wallaby back row. Another player who might not survive. 4
Chris Ashton
Hungry for work and there were moments when he looked threatening but in a big boys’ game he fell disappointingly short. 5
Toby Flood
More direct. Attacked the gain line but suffered because he is just not quick enough to get free of tackles. Should have taken greater control. 6
Dan Cole
Perhaps not quite the world-class tight-head everyone thought. Benn Robinson tested him fully and Cole did not come back with much. 4
Chris Robshaw
Shaded by Hooper who had a fabulous first 40 minutes and an even better second half. Questions over his decisions inside the third quarter. 4
Manu Tuilagi
In full-on bahser mode to score a very iffy try just before half-time but that was all he offered. A bad knock-on at the death, too. 6
Danny Care
Scrambled well defensively to snuff out Australia’s clever kicks in the first half and put pace on game for Tuilagi’s try. Not much else, though. 5
Tom Palmer
A couple of canters in the loose but another of his infuriating quietish afternoons. Will be under pressure from Launchbury. 4
Thomas Waldrom
No frills but the tank engine does drag his side forwards. Close once or twice to scoring but close not good enough against the top sides. 5
Brad Barritt
Barely saw him in the first half and it was not a whole lot better in the second period. Provided none of the variety exhibited by his opponents. 4
Joe Marler
Carried an injury for much of the first period. Dodgy hands at times and under pressure in the scrums. His worst game for England by a mile. 2
Geoff Parling
Gave away a dull penalty for “pushing defenders out of the way” when England were in a good field position. I still think he lacks real presence. 5
Australia
Berrick Barnes
Gave the Wallabies options. A cute early drop goal showed what an intelligent footballer he is and he played astutely throughout. 8
Nick Cummins
The play seemed to come down his wing most of the match. Finished off his try professionally and muscled through tackles all game. 7
Tatafu Polota-Nau
A liability. Great work ethic but just made too many mistakes on the carry and throwing in to his jumpers. Replaced by Stephen Moore during interval. 5
Dave Dennis
Was one of Australia’s principal ball carriers. Got better as the game went on. Very efficient in all that he did. 7
Digby Ioane
Could not get into the game at all in the first half and was replaced by Drew Mitchell before the end. Ioane is a better player than this. 5
Kurtley Beale
An individual who had to be watched all the time. Never predictable, always entertaining. He and Barnes worked well together. 8
Ben Alexander
Australia’s Adam Jones. Without him the Wallabies do not have a platform. Scrum wobbled when he went off inside the last quarter. 9
Michael Hooper
Just wonderful. Benefited from the work of his front five but did more than anyone to force the victory. 10
Adam Ashley-Cooper
Thumped up the middle once or twice but well contained by England’s defence in the first half. Different story after half-time when he was excellent. 7
Nick Phipps
More of a runner than a passer. Phipps injected the gas for the try by Cummins and handled the pressure well. 6
Sitaleki Timani
A strange match. Did not notice him until you looked hard into the dark places and then he was everywhere. 8
Wycliff Palu
Caught the first kick-off and then ploughed forwards for the rest of the game. A hard, tight performance. 8
Ben Tapuai
Not afraid to try things. Tapuai mixed his game up well and coped with the physical exchanges. A creditable performance. 7
Benn Robinson
Much more like the decent prop we know he is. Stopped all chat of a Wallaby scrum disaster and turned it to scrum triumph. 9
Nathan Sharpe
Well over a hundred caps and way past his stated retirement date but the old boy still has it. Bloodied but unbowed. 8

It was a try.

This shot is pretty conclusive and unfortunately I now have to climb down off my high horse.

If this link doesn't work properly - Go to photo #10/23.

This photo is what i'd call "inconclusive". I couldnt categorically say he got it down before he lost it. I'm happy to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I think the video refs should be consistent in this regard. Alexander's try (earlier in the game) was turned down when the ball appeared to be grounded , and i assume the TMO ruled he was short of the line on the basis that the footage was inconclusive. To be honest I think you either give the benefit of the doubt for both tries, or neither. that is my only beef.

Watching the video reviews of that try, I felt that the purple player had lost control of the pill before it got across the chalk, and that it was touch and go whether Phipps grounded it across the line.

In the photo Phipps hand is a long way off. The Purple player has effective control of the ball (just), and there is the appearance that a couple of blades of grass touching the ball have white on them.

I am with you regarding Alexander's no try.
