Aussie Player Exodus

Holmes and Hayne were/are quite a bit more talented than Petaia IMO.

not in my opinion.
Rugby league players are big fish in small pond (NRL played professionally in 3 countries max)

rugby union is big fish in big pond. Petaia is considered an athletic freak in our game.

anyways time will tell - if he proceeds down this road.

I don’t think there’s a current Wallaby that would make an NRL rep side.

My response re the Petaia/NFL chatter. I believe the NFL scouts have a lot more idea of what they are looking for than any of us.
Maybe. But they also have zero to lose. Pay them nothing on their budget and hope someone pays off eventually. They throw offers at people who have never played all the time.

But Rugby is a very small pond in Australia. Doesn’t really matter about the countries playing it.

AFL players must be a complete joke then (I kinda think they are tbf) but they’re fit. You get what I’m saying

nah when I say big fish big pond - I mean world rugby!

the commentators gush at the World Cup about Petaia athletic ability.

Never heard anyone anywhere gushing about JP's athletic freakiness except from one particular poster here. He is certainly a high class athlete but really no more so than most of those who play rugby at this level.

The differences in the games are becoming even greater IMO now. Rugby is so slow and stop start it probably suits the NFL more than him going to the NRL and his body lasting a half.

Making it in the nfl means playing in the nfl.
If your definition of making it is being on a practice squad for a season….
I would put him at a low chance of making a practice squad.
He has barely performed as an international rugby player - certainly not with any consistency. His hands are also inconsistent and he has a much higher center of gravity than hayne who for all intents and purposes didn’t make it in the nfl either.
I would say self marketing ploy - he will end up in Japan or France and make close to $1M a year.

Petaia has never shown half the ability Jarrad Haynes has/did. Holmes I didn't watch as much.

Petaia for al his potential is a bit of a myth.

So slow? Not a position supported by Matt Rogers on STAN last night. He specifically claimed as someone who had played both that rugby is a lot faster game than League. Also that the standard of rugby in this country has improved this year over the past few years.

you are mixing up the codes. Ghost of raelene was referencing NFL with its stop/start games rules being more suited to a rugby player then a rugby player going to league

Anyway I look at it SX, he says that the differences between Rugby and League are becoming greater and then, apparently supporting that argument, that Rugby is slow and stop start with any rational interpretation being that it is slower than League and hence players would suit the similar stop start nature of NFL. I am just pointing out that according to one Matt Rogers, it is the opposite.

Where is this bad hands on Petaia coming from? Total nonsense.

The amount of times he’s been chucked a hospital pass just because the inside man doesn’t want it in traffic and he’s somehow managed to keep the ball proves that to be false.

There’s been some good rules introduced to speed up the game. The goal line drop out instead of a 5m scrum when held up over the line has made rugby a better spectacle … albeit this is a rugby league rule

Think it’s very nice of him on Rugby coverage to compliment the sport he’s working on.

Even with the time of ball in play Rugby is usually around 35-38 mins and League gets 55-65 mins. It’s more play, more action. We see some fast plays and good broken field play in Rugby but we can then watch 7 mins or scrum re sets.

NRL is a far bigger sport in this country and thus draws in far more athletic talent
JP is fast and has some good footwork. To call him an athletic freak is a massive embellishment.
He is a good rugby player.
A freak was folau.
