The National Under 16 competition was cancelled indefinitely last year and IIRC the funds redirected to the JGC.

There is a National Schoolboys Championships for Under 18's held annually but with each state running their own schooling systems, some kids in some states can leave school as Under 17's and as they are not attending a School are therefore not eligible to participate in that.

Lastly there is also a National Under 20 Championship, having just been through its second iteration.
On the funding issue... is there any transparency as to what the true cost of the program is after the parent / fundraising / sponsorship contributions?

........My concern is that there doesn't seem to have been any increase in player numbers in the Sydney JRU upper age groups on the back of the JGC targeting Under 15's and U17's. If the kids coming out of JGC are not offered challenging games of footy in the "proper" season then all that time and effort to teach them skills via the JGC will be lost as they drift out of rugby through disinterest.
Just what we have been talking about at our local club up here in Qld. It's very much like a number of clubs have to pull together in the later grades to form regional teams.
To use our local club as an example, the U15s are surprisingly strong but are unable to form a team in the 16s or 17s. So they have spoken to the surrounding clubs to form some teams in this age group who have also been unable to make up a team.
It's a sad sight indeed to see halve a dozen keen boys rock up to a club and be unable to play. The clubs collectively need to address it president to president as I don't believe the direction will come from the BJRU and maintain some of the momentum from the JGC. Which culminates for us QLDers point of view this Saturday against NSW at Ballymore.
Let's see if the Reds can finally win something this season!!

It's a real concern. We have teams in the same boat here. Our under 17 Gold boys will play Colts this year to improve the quality of football. They will also play under 17s.

Unfortunately, the competition will have a reduced number of teams or will play with reduced numbers on the field for the 17s competition.

For us, the Colts competition fills the gap for those players. Also, since we have an under 17s team, some of the 15s may be able to be assessed to play up.

I'm sure those options aren't available in every case, though.

NSW V QLD Tomorrow at Ballymore, kickoff 12:45pm for the U15s followed by the U17s.
Looking forward to two quality games. Certainly is going to be a step up for the boys involved. Go QLD!!!

For those interested, looks like the game will be streamed on the Reds website tomorrow at 12:45 Qld time.

The U15 NSW and QLD teams for 2015.
Very good game of footy. Both sides played well with some outstanding talent on show. The QLDers showing their senior counterparts how to win a game.

Interesting to see if any of the U17 boys from QLD or NSW make their respective state u18 schools sides. I would hope some of the 'new' talent have had an opportunity push for a place. Any thoughts on QLD from those of you up north.

Lots of QLD players finish School in their Under 17 year. Not so in NSW.

One would be looking for the NSW JCG lads to make their tilt at state team or Combined States for National Schoolboys in 2016 when they are Under 18.

Hence the question with respect to QLD. There will also be u17 NSW boys make the u18s but realistically, perhaps not from this years JGC as you point out.

Is it too early to talk about the loses by the Qld u17 and u20 teams to NSW? So many left scratching their heads at selections in both teams. Why is it that same age groups in league easily account for NSW, but we fall so short in union?

So what do we have 2/3 months and Gold cup selections start in Brisbane?
geez the time will fly by.

Heard NSW are reducing the number of U17 teams for this years Gold cup, wonder if Qld is following suit?
I guess to compete better with the other states who send 1 team per age group?
Seems it just might be getting a little more about being competive and winning, and less about broader development.
Anyone heard more about this?

I understand the U15s are staying the same. The 17s seem to be splitting into six "provinces": Metro East and West, Northern, Western, Eastern and Southern.

Not sure of the breakup, except that Western now takes in the Central North Zone.

Zones are broken up as per the attached.

From a results perspective, combining Northern Inland (3 wins from 10 games in 2014*) and North Coast (0 wins from 10) is understandable.

Similarly, including Illawarra (0 wins from 10 games) in a larger catchment has obvious benefits in terms of competitiveness.

The amalgamation of Central Coast (4 wins from 10) and Hunter (6 wins from 10) is a little harder to justify on the results. Is there a reason apparent to those closer to the action?

The reduction of Sydney teams from 4 to 2.5 in each age group (allowing Southern Province as a half) seems strange. Almost every Sydney team had a winning record in 2014 and it doesn't seem that any of the metro centres had reached their full potential in terms of organisation and player development.

On a related issue, it would be fantastic if there could be greater cross branding between the NRC and JGC.

North Harbour Rays would seem relatively straightforward but I guess Rams would be more difficult given Southern Districts wouldn't be included and apparently the whole Stars/Country Eagles/University/Randwick/Eastern Suburbs thing is something that only Sydney folk understand.

(*5 games each for U15 and U17.)

It is certainly interesting that NSW have made these changes, there was some talk up in Qld of the Brisbane metro teams dropping from 5 to 4.
Not sure if they will do this, guess we will see in a month or so.
But as I said, it looks likely that less boys will get to take part in Gold cup.

while the JGC is about opportunity as much as competition I think a more competitive U17s will do a lot more for their development than keeping all the current centres going. If we ever a u19s/20s age group they should take it further to effectively mimic the NRC. A pyramid with a wider base will ensure ever increasing levels of competition.
