Crikey, the Rebels must think a lot of Esei Ha'angana. The big lock is still only 17 and yet they made him the captain of their U20s; and now he's off to South Africa with the seniors, although he's not a contracted player.

Mind you, their second-rowers have been going down like flies.

He didn't take my eye in the U20 game I saw him play but that may have been more the fault of my eye than of his ability.

Also he didn't look to have the ideal build for a lock - not rangy, and arguably over-weight - though maybe it's my bad eye playing up again.

Tuipulotu is a known "commodity" but the other two touring Rebels U20s won't be able to press their case for Aus U20 selection since they are not available for the Oceania tournament.

And the 28 for the Worlds will be named after that tournament and before the final camp at the AIS in Canberra - so they must hope that they have made a big enough impression already.
.
He has come along way since playing Combined States last year
Esei Ha'angana, born 1999

It scares me that from next year, we will see kids born after the year 2000 debuting in Super Rugby

Anyone know who is in rehab so ineligible? Some surprises is an understatement...

I don't like to question players selected, but the omissions that raised my eyebrows were Hoopert and Walker at prop, Girdler in the back row and Goddard at halfback. I'm factoring in players like Vui, Uelese Etc being on super duties

Rob Leota is eligible and injured, but the last (only?) injury report the Rebels put out said either Season or Indefinite, which gives no helpful information whatsoever.

Oceania squad gotta perform, with the return of sevens players, super players & injury recovered players available for JWC. Go hard or Go home!!! Sound hard but that's the bottom line.

Lee answered most of my queries, but I'm still a bit surprised Goddard and Girdler got overlooked. I can't say I watched all the games closely so it's just my opinion on what I saw. Good luck to all the boys.

I guess Girdler has been squeezed out because they only picked one specialist 8 and decided that the two 6s and 7s cover Hewat. With a squad of only 29 there's presumably a fair bit of thought about likely matchday 23s.

If they're definitely going to start Hewat at 8, Cron is presumably thinking that his best 23 doesn't have a specialist 8 on the bench.

I didn't really see a lot of Goddard or Lonergan but Nucifora and Strang certainly seemed excellent. Not sure who Goddard missed out to, but seems to be a fair amount of competition at halfback this year (which is good because it has been a reasonably weak spot in recent years).
