Harris at fullback? With Hernandez bombing the shit out of him? No thanks (then again who else, Morahan?)

Timani and Samo in the backrow, jeezuz now Hooper has to do the equivelent workload of 3 backrowers.

I don't mind Timani at 6 as long as our game plan matches the selection. If we decide to play a spin-it-wide, razzle-dazzle style like on the GC then it will turn to shit. If we want to keep it tight then it might just work, especially as the Argies aren't going to be doing too much radical.

There is no doubt Timani is a better ball-runner and defender than DD, it's just the workrate and lineout that could be an issue.

Harris was pretty dreadful when playing fullback last year for the Reds. What has he shown since then that he has improved in that position? If you want his goalkicking surely it's better to go 12 Harris 13 McCabe 15 Morahan.

The last time I can remember a specialist lock being selected at 6 was Garrick Morgan. We all know what happened that game.

All I know is that I am not a fan at all of the Fainga'a/McCabe pairing. I think the forward pack could be a good move, especially since I doubt the backline will be playing expansive rugby. Would have much preferred to see Morahan or Taps at 13. There are whole host of other backline combinations I would prefer to see than the McCbe/Fainga'a pairing.

Agree. It really comes down to whether you go for a conservative, harm minimisation approach or take a chance on a couple of youngsters and have a crack. Taps at 13, Morahan at 15 would have been more attack focused. Beale to take goal kicking. Harris on the bench as he covers so many positions.

Under the circumstances I don't mind Deans going for a more conservative pairing. Don't think now is the time to be experimenting with untested players and combinations, as much as we can help it.

Nup, the Australian way is having a crack and going for it, particularly when we're down and out, tired and sore and have heaps of players missing.
I don't want to see any more conservatism from Deans. He should be working in a library or for the National Trust were his approach is better suited.
Don't ask me why, we just seem to perform better when we're written off and almost down and out.
Cutting through the BS, SA should have scored well over 50 last week.
A conservative approach V Argentina in Argentina will result in a heavy loss by penalty goals, as they'll pound away in the forwards, get field position and take penalties.
We need to back the young speedsters, play a fast game running it from everywhere and not die wondering.

If it wasn't such an important game for Deans' career, you would think he should play Taps and Morahan. Both have huge potential and with the amount of injuries there is good justification for giving them a run and seeing if they can handle it at this level. ABs have already won the championship and we are really just worrying about our minor place. However, clearly the situation is quite different to that.

Harris got shown up playing full back for the reds yet he gets picked there for the wallabies?

Mowen should have been bought in to play 6....

I am glad Deans will most likely (injury dependent) leave the nucleus of the remaining uninjured backs in tact, that is the 9,10,11,12,14. Fainga'a has been weighed and measured at test level and he isn't the answer, not even now with all the injuries.
I don't mind Harris at 15 even though Morahan has more 15 experience, simply because Harris has been with the Wallabies squad for the duration of the tournament and as such is more familiar with the Wallabies set up. I know the same argument can made in regards to Fainga'a, but he just doesn't offer anything in attack and is too similar to McCabe, but not as good.
Harris offers good kicking and can penetrate the defence with some hustle and bustle. He also adds a 2nd playmaker option to assist Beale. The selection of Harris, provides the Wallabies with options on the field and in my opinion, will fill the role of Barnes, but better.
This is one of those rare situations where selecting Morahan, Taps or Cummins at 13 has everything to gain and little to lose. McCabe still deserves his spot at 12 and should not be shuffled.
I think all three offer more than Fainga'a as players and I doubt any of them will offer less than Fainga'a this weekend. In all honesty, I think all 3 would bring more to the Wallaby backline and especially with Taps or Morahan, they could create some opportunities outside of them and take some of the ground and pound duties off McCabe and Ioane.

As much as I hate to say it, I have to agree with you there, barbs. This game for the Wallabies is all about keeping it tight and basic. If they go all gung-ho, it could go very badly for them and I just have to hope that the coaching and strategy teams know that.

The calls for RD's head are justified, but I must admit that rightly or wrongly, I feel for the bloke a bit right now.

I know that several high profile ex-rugby persons have said that injuries are no excuse, but let's be a bit reasonable; apart from the AB's (who have a seemingly endless supply of Test-ready players in the warehouse), every other team in the world would be collapsing on itself with the kind of injury levels the Wallabies have right now.

It's a bit like saying that at work you have to keep your department outputs at the same level or higher, but half of your staff are on leave and you have a handful of casual temps available instead.

Similar to WJ's ideas with the Tah's backline, if we are looking put some tall timber in the pack then may I suggest:

1. Simmons
2. Neville
3. Pyle
4. Sharpe
5. Douglas
6. Timani
7. Wallace-Harrison
8. Samo

Actually, if we apply WJ's all half backline to the wobs, we could have:

9. Phipps
10. Sheehan
11. Prior
12. Frisby
13. Stirzlacker
14. Kingi
15. McKibbon

I have only chosen guys that are fit. God that was hard! But we have a goal kicker and lineout options everywhere. Seeing as Timani isn't a jumper, he will have to throw the ball in though.

I agree Fainga'a isn't the answer at Test level, but he was the only back who created a try scoring opportunity on the weekend by hitting the defense, then looking for and executing the off load. I like McCabe but He offers no more than Fainga'a at current due to his running style (again way to high into contact on the weekend) and his horrible vision. He predetermines his option way to far in advance and often an unmarked opportunity goes begging. If he could remove the blinkers and look to involve his team mates more he would be a standout option in the backline. until that point he is still 'meh'.

Harris has been found wanting at 15 for the Reds a few times. To be honest He wouldn't be starting for the Reds if they put out a full strength backline. I think Link recognised this pretty early in the piece.

Interesting - looks like Slipper may get nod ahead of Robinson (presumably no more silly buggers with replacements), possibly Timani at 6 in place of Dennis (not too sure about that - thought Dennis has been a pretty solid contributor over the past few games). Guess they are happy with Douglas. Harris possibly to fullback - seems to me that this is not such a bad move - want to try to minimise the level of disruption to the backline if they can, so maintain Phipps, Beale, McCabe, either Tapuia or Fainga'a (would prefer Tapuai) in for AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), Shipperly and Ioane on the wing (Cummnins on standby for Ioane by the looks of it).

Actually I am pretty sure that Shipperly is being dropped from the starting line up for Cummins.

Agree with Jiggles, I don't see much between McCabe and Fainga'a, particularly playing at 12. There might be more of a difference at 13 where McCabe could use his superior pace.

But neither of them, along with Harris and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) I see as long term wallaby centre options. All have limitations, which don't appear to be significantly improving.

WTF has a forward got to do with a 10,11,12,13,14 or 15 beating or stepping his opposition
