This game is going to be won or lost up front again this Saturday. If we don't generate more quick ball, we are not beating the ABs. With Pocock out, I'm increasingly pessimistic that the Wallabies can compete at the breakdown; we certainly have been ineffective without him. Do I want another fetcher? No, I'm inclined to leave Gill outside the 22 and play the more flexible Hooper, but Pocock is our best player and Saturday now looks a lot tougher now.
Having said that this game is all about fronting up in the collisions and at the breakdown next Sat, I want to say a few words about 10.
Those who advocated for the selection of Barnes at 10 did so because his less off the cuff game gives structure to a team that lacks it, and which a coaching staff has failed to provide. At Test level, when the pressure really comes on from teams like the ABs, QC (Quade Cooper) blows either hot or invariably cold. It can be feast or famine and his performance renders the contribution of the 14 others less significant.
It has been well documented that the Reds play with a definite structure that many here argue allows CQ to flourish. In the Wallabies, he doesn't have that structure to fall back upon and irrespective of his organization skills, his confidence can take a knock and his play is badly affected as we saw in the RWC.
QC (Quade Cooper) and Barnes played effectively together against France but this seems to have been abandoned. Deans wants a hard-straight running 12 it seems, which will also tend to eliminate the possibility of JOC (James O'Connor) playing 12 for the Wallabies under Deans. But I'd like to see QC (Quade Cooper) and Barnes revisited. We have to be more aggressive in attacking the ABs with the rare good ball we do generate, otherwise it will be a mere damage limitation exercise.
