    Bye Bye Paddy O'Brien

He's got a few years of super rugby reffing in him. I'd guess he'll help out up and coming refs in Currie Cup/Super Rugby for a few years. Then decide whether or not to go further. He is a smart guy (optometrist I think). It looks like they might be changing the role of referee manager...

    Bye Bye Paddy O'Brien

Mark Lawrence retired from test refereeing after he missed out on world cup selection in 2011 (saying he wanted to make way for emerging refs now). But I couldn't imagine him missing out on this list if he made himself available.

    Waratahs vs Sharks - RD5 2012

Sharks are such a good team right now, I don't know how the Tahs won that. Some great induvidual breaks and spot-on kicking probably got them there. The Sharks are wheeling the maul around to the left for BdP to peel off and score/or get very close. Teams need to find a way to counter this...

    Waratahs vs Sharks - RD5 2012

One penalty and they get a 5m out lineout > rolling maul. Tahs need to find a turnover somewhere.

    Waratahs vs Sharks - RD5 2012

Is this the attacking rugby the fans wanted? Great stuff. TPN and Dean Mumm are on fire.

    Waratahs vs Sharks - RD5 2012

This game is awesome, come on Tahs!

    Waratahs vs Sharks - RD5 2012

Sharks look very good early on. Hopefully the Tahs can step up, or else it will be one-sided.

    Looks like a positive change.

2012 S15 All things Referee thread

Well whoever it was (a tall south african that looks similar) gave us a speech on how to confidently referee and control a game. So he'd be an expert in that respect. ;) edit: come to think of it I could be mistaken, will find out later anyway.

2012 S15 All things Referee thread

I think that guy (Van de Merwe) gave a speech at our pre-season referee conference. If not him, someone who looks very similar. And if it is him. He was extremely interesting to listen to and I'm sure a very confident referee. Good luck to him.

    Digby banned for five weeks

Sure, if that's how you interpret the tackle. It's a borderline case thought which the commissioner/s probably ruled the other way on. Poki would be able to make a pretty good case against the "dropped from a height with no regard for player safety" part of the charge.

    Digby banned for five weeks

They cite offences if it is a red card under the law (it's not just opinion based). And the whole thing about teams report players is just if they think the commissioner/ref missed something.

    Digby banned for five weeks

Digby's was a red card offence (spear tackle). Do you know of any spear tackles that haven't been sanctioned? (IMO the AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) one was just a lifting tackle, not a spear tackle)

    Digby banned for five weeks

I'm not that familiar with it, but it seems to work alright for NRL because the comp revolves around 2 states. The SuperXV is over 3 countries so gathering everyone who was reported in a conferences room every week (like NRL) is pretty much out of the question. We could probably take some...

    The Judiciary

I expect taking on a system like that will result in more common, and lengthier suspensions. So that will probably clean up the game a little more, and if that's what people want. Go for it.

    Digby banned for five weeks

What aspect of the NRL judicial system do you want SANZAR to adopt? I'm confused. They do grade offences, that's why the reports talk about things like the "entry sanction" which for a dangerous tackle I think is 3 weeks. edit: found this in about 1 minute, table towards end of document...

    Digby banned for five weeks

True, reading through the report now and picking up details.

    Digby banned for five weeks

Looks like Digby's bad record of spear tackles made it a 5 week ban. edit: It's a 4 game ban, not 5 game (as i first thought). So he is really only 1 game past the entry point in this case.

    Rebels v Cheetahs - Round 4 - Super Rugby 2012

Cheetah's 100% deserved that. Running the ball out of their own 22, Strauss and Ashley Johnson stepped up when needed.
