"develop a local comp based on what" based on Australian rugby, based on a domestic competition, based on local rivalry, based on tribalism, based on TV interest, based on the same model that works for the AFL & NRL, based on local derbies, based on something we can actually afford, based on...

The most important thing about separate domestic competitions is it then allows each competition to align and adapt to there own marketplace. NZ may end up with 8 teams Australia 7 (who knows, but each individual market will determine that) Tribalism, scheduling, economies, private money...

Those same people running the game that have us about $120 million in debt and a code struggling to remain even relevant in Australia, at the same time they have all been paid quite well for there services. As Derpus says not sure how much weight those opinions should be given.

I agree they need to build new bits that are fit for purpose. That is a domestic competition with enough Teams/Content to cover Australia to at least start to compete with the NRL/AFL and probably the A league into the future...

This is where I agree with Half. I have just read a couple of articles in the SMH, not actually read them as they are behind a paywall, so no doubt take them with a grain of salt...

Dan, The structural set up of the game here with its underlying slave relationship to Test rugby is the issue. I’m sorry I just don’t buy the whole there are no other options, when you only have to cross the street to see better more financial set ups. In fact the set up has been a success...

A 2nd NSW team doesn't have to be in Western Sydney, the whole point of a 2nd team is to maximize your market & support, to create tribalism a game in your biggest market place every weekend, another team to help create more media. We need to grow the game in Australia & reach a bigger market...

It should also have evolved as a competition, but by design it has never Been able to adjust or meet market conditions, which is partly why it is getting its preverbal ass kicked by the NRL & AFL. Just one glaring example out of a 100, NSW only having one entity in the biggest market in...

Then why would you persist with Super Rugby, which is bankrupting the game in this country

And that has been the exact thinking for the last 25 years, every decision has been justified by the best financial outcome, its a win-win. And look where we are.

Nothing is going to change until you address the business model that these teams operate under. Having the rebels a single entity franchise in a state that barely participates in the code compete on a supposedly equal basis with other franchises including NZ (arguably the strongest rugby...

Then we should be discussing the whole point of Super rugby, exactly what has this competition achieved for the code in this country over the last 25 years. Until the game here actually deals with the fundamental issues of why it is stoned cold broke, then you are simply kicking the can down the...

It does not solve anything though, you are simply shuffling debt around. In the end it has to be paid and RA are the ones paying. The problem is they don't have any money. The whole structure of the game here is ultimately unsustainable.

Yep, most young folk can travel the world with Jetstar & Air Asia these days. The whole travel the world thing says more about rugby's aging fan base than anything else.

So how do you fix that 70% with less players, less fans, Less supporters, less money, less tribalism, less viewers, less TV rights. That 70% becomes just another Wishlist.

    Australian Rugby / RA

The question has to be asked why the RA signed up to a competition until 2031 that has been pretty much an abject failure for the last 20 years, and it is hard to see how much further loss of face this would cause the RA, we're not talking about an organization that has a lot of reputation to...

What has that got to do with it. So the game is played in some other countries in the world. So because we play Test rugby then we cannot have a domestic competition, has someone told the French. They are comparable, because they are competing with us for eyeballs each weekend of the season...
