    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

I wonder if Rugby’s sanctimonious approach will extend beyond problem gamblers when it dives head long into all those Arab $$$$. "proven business model" AFL, NRL or Super Rugby, take your pick.

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

That's the difference between two sporting codes one driven by a club based proven business model that generates growth, support, equalization, better business decisions, private equity, Tribalism, Cross town derby's, Competitive broadcast landscape etc etc. The other one is Rugby Union.

    Australian Rugby / RA

It doesn't matter how you frame it. It is a recipe for going broke more quicker than we currently are. Who is going to watch this and who is going to pay for it, the rusted on fans who are already paid up. "Not watching Super Rugby" then give our development competition a go, NZ is struggling...

Except your getting into a gunfight with an opposition code that has a lot more money, smarter business operators and far more professional positions to offer. The whole Cleary thinking is Wallaby centric off we go again to conquer the world, the NRL has 18 soon to be 20 so called Wallaby...

That's a magnificent achievement for the game here, our only super star is Sualili, a guy that hasn't played a senior game yet and last played as a schoolboy.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

The game is supposedly healthy & growing at a Test level, but it appears that at the domestic level it is struggling in virtually every market it has a presence in, Except two countries that don't have a slave relationship with there Test team. could not part of that issue being the game...

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

While the Rebels administrators were clearly negligent, there are whole raft of reasons why the Rebels were not successful, it was not just solely due to the Rebels operators. The price the game will pay is due to the head in the sand attitude of the code here, trying to apportion blame asap and...

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

You could also argue about those VFL teams, the players are paid so it's a level of professionalism but at a much lower level.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

The whole issue I have with this is the lack of reflection or learnings from the Rebels saga, as long as a villain is found and blamed then great we just move on and nothing changes. The whole Rebels fiasco was like entering a mini in a formula one race and guess what losing. But then just year...

"RA seem to be trying to live within their means" being broke does that to you.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

They do, but at the time all we ever heard was expand or die. Hell if someone watched a game of rugby in a remote village in Africa, they were parachuting in Super Rugby expansion swat teams the next day, the games narrative was all about global expansion in the early 2000's Melbourne supports...

The Rebels don't exist because because of a whole lot of factors, of which we have discussed ad nauseum for the last 10 years, check the "where to for Super rugby" blog. Blaming it on whoever controlled the Rebels just ignores the root causes for the games decline in this country.

Because they're pretty much already using bridging finance, the RA are about $70/80 million in debt as is. Those pots of gold forever promised never quite seem to eventuate to the level promised. They do have money come in over the next few years, Lions, WC and some sort of bastardized champions...

    Super Rugby Pacific 2025

Because all that Global Rugby Money has worked out so well for the game in Australia.

I have always been confused with the approach to the game in this country. Mention a domestic competition and it's as if the game here could barely support a Tuesday night social league. Yet happily moves forward with a growth strategy that relies on its Test team basically being number one in...

Well if that is the case then. We are truly fucked.

    Australian Rugby / RA

But that's my point, we have created the scenario where they generate such little revenue. NSW they have one team in Unions biggest state, but they only play 6/7 home games each year, half there away games are in another country, the season ends at the end of June basically, there is no Rugby...

    Sounds reasonable.

    Australian Rugby / RA

That debt is due to the unsustainable set up of Super Rugby. When your funding model relies on a Wallaby win ratio, yet doesn't take into account they are not the All Blacks and Rugby Union is a long way from the national sport of Australia, then you slowly chalk up what is it now $80 million in...
