    Rugby News from unexpected places

And a tweet has been going around about Spain entering a team in the French system at the ProD2 level.

    Rugby News from unexpected places

More Pro12 speculation. Apparently there's now interest from a potential German franchise. Which does seem far fetched if not for the fact that it seems to be centred around Heidelberg which is also the home of the WILD Rugby Academy. The same billionaire who has been in the process of getting...

That's the point of maintaining the Rams.

If that were to occur I'd look to keep the Rams, Rising, Spirit and Vikings. Then open 4 spots for both teams from the Shute Shield and Brisbane. This would give us a 12 team league over 22 rounds.

Wasn't suggesting they merge. They would continue to run bpth squads as a pathway for each competition.

Agreed. The ARU should be talking to Foxtel about the value of upgrading the NRC to a full domestic league. The likes of the Brumbies, Force and Rebels could easily enough keep their branding. Or the value of taking the current 5 and adding the two Country's to the fold. Add Fiji and we have an...

Are you saying that without us Super Rugby is D.O.A in terms of being a viable TV product?

    Australian Rugby / RA

I agree with that sentiment with the exemption of NSW and Queensland. While they are very much franchises these days they did evolve from the traditional rep sides.

Which brings up an interesting question. If say the ARU cans the Rebels, should they look to relocate the Brumbies who are struggling in a single small market to Melbourne as their primary base while splitting games between AAMI and GIO? And would both sets of fans still support them. This...

There are actually 6 provinces in the Campenato already.

Sort of why I suggested going with 6. That way the regular season could run for 10 weeks and then the 2nd phase could be either home and away again or just a straight round robin for 5 more games. Alternatively. With speculation the Panasonic Wild Knights are eyeing up a run at Super Rugby one of them...

Not necessarily. Depends on whether or not SA keep 6 teams or not. If they scrap the Kings then 5 will be fine. But I would still go for separate Japanese and Argentine conferences.

We could look to include Fiji in our 'league'. Run it for 10 weeks and then run the Champions League set up. Have the Top 6 teams from the Top League play in their conference. Have NZ add one and Argentina use either their Compenato or Nacionales de Clubs. The current 6 SA remain.

To the point where you effectively create a semi-pro rep team and run them in say the SS.

    Australian Rugby / RA

It would require a signifcant commitment to the overall development of the game in whichever one they dropped and more attention and absolutely more emphasis on the NRC.

Don't the ARU still provide the Rebels with funding? Either way, I'm actually not a fan of nixing anyone to be honest. As far as I'm concerned Super Rugby doesn't need to contract more re-organise. The conference format they used last season and this one is bullshit. A far simpler one is literally...

Sorry, guys but if any should go it should be the Rebels. The Force have just signed a significant sponsorship deal while the Rebels are still to find a sponsor. If the Rebels go then the Brumbies could be assigned the territory this expanding their base.

Possibly moving. Wasn't there a proposal that suggested just that?

    Shute Shield 2017

No. Just a suggestion on using the current state U20s squads to help build interest in the SS from outside of NSW. Just a suggestion and would be highly dependent on it actually being workable.
