    Reds 2021

I feel like I’ve been a bit of a kill joy this morning. I’d like to say it is great to read comments from many of you wanting to have better engagement with regional areas regardless of my own reservations. And i do think we were seeing a definite increase in effort from the Reds/QRU/RA to...

Liked your post Phoenix - but I do want to point out Jonah Placid is a Rocky boy :)

I think you’ll find initiatives like that stayed in place until at least the 2000s. I played in some of those feeder competitions in the 90s and early 2000s — although never above regional selection. I played a couple of games against Brisbane opposition (even then some of the scores were a blow...

I will add that I thought one of the beauties of the NRC from a Qld POV was that I felt I had two teams to support. When Qld Country played Brisbane City, I backed Qld Country. But against everyone else I was behind Brisbane City.

Wallabies v Pumas, Bankwest (Parra), Sat 5th December

Looking forward to the game tonight. Hopefully we get to see a glimpse of the future with the Wallabies with them cutting lose a bit. Execution has let us down a fair bit over the course of the Tr Nations but we have shown and ability to create and maintain pressure at times. If we can just...

I should clarify on the above points I agree about the alignment between QPR clubs and regional areas. I’d like to see the NRC teams stay as City & Country, not North & South.

They still do. I do agree it seems to have slipped a bit in relevance. But I think that is a reflection of sport itself. It has become more centralised and streamlined. Regrettably some of the old customs have gone are been diminished. I don’t know if it will ever really turn around - but...

Drew - I don’t think your comments are really reflecting the general theme of this discussion. This discussion was specifically about the characters in the game who could be used to promote the game. IMO these guys all fit the bill. They have good humour and a bit of character. What they do...

    Reds 2021

I think there needs to be a differentiation between the Qld Country NRC and the Qld Country representative team which is still chooses from country based players and plays/tours as a genuine representative side made up of players from regional areas. The QRU supports both programs. I do have...

Agree. Don’t get me wrong, I think some QPR clubs would do themselves enormous favours to reach out to regional areas. I know some already have as well.

    Reds 2021

This idea I agree with - although I’d point out that there is nothing stopping country areas already reaching out to QPR clubs. There are already some of these relationships in place and some wins are being had.

I’d also add the Sio & Ala'alatoa double act, the Smith twins and Benn Robinson (Flashtahs & Waratahs Skills - Summer Edition - also featuring TPN).

For what it’s worth, if people smarter than me (and there are plenty of them) think it would work - knock yourself out. I’d love to see it happen.

I guess it depends how theoretical you want to make the discussion. It would require not only a vastly significant sum of money, but also lots of other significant changes. And it depend what you mean by a positive outcome. I am friends with one of the former Capras Coaches. When he took the...

    I did. Great job.

I just don’t see that as realistic. I also don’t think you necessarily get a great outcome. Rockhampton is rugby league heartland. Year in year out some of the best come from here with Cameron Munster and Harry Grant being the latest two. But the local Q Cup side is a perennial cellar dweller...

    Waratahs 2021

Good point - I was thinking of it mainly from the point of view of the Tahs having such a young, but promising, side. But it also aligns well with relaunching rugby to a broader audience.

    Reds 2021

As someone based in Qld Country - admittedly one of the weaker subunions - I don’t see it as realistic you are going to get kids progressing from Country Clubs direct to NRC. They need to move to Brisbane and play in the club comp there and be exposed to the best other club players. People...

    Waratahs 2021

You made the point in your previous post, which I agree with, that they need some personalities. IMO HJH (Harry Johnson-Holmes) fits that bill. I also agree with the gist of your first paragraph here in that he is going to get limited cut through at the moment - but I don’t think that is because he isn’t marketable...
