    Shute Shield 2013

Anyone know what's happening with the Randwick licensed club? I see they've opened membership for 2013 which seems to be at odds with the announcement that the site was for sale.

But what do they add....that's the question? Can't beat the Emu burgers....real value for money and the meat (and gravy) covers the whole bun! Makes the trip to Nepean well worth the effort:)

On the subject of BBQs I'll probably get shot down in flames, but I've always thought the sausage sandwiches were way overpriced at Chatswood and that the locals got an extra sausage! Maybe I should take my Randwick cap off next time I'm buying;)

Interesting thoughts from Simon Poidevin and Chris Roche about the 3rd tier: http://www.randwickrugby.com.au/news/2013-news/1956-clubs-the-key-to-third-tier-says-simon-poidevin

Belly, where's the pressure coming from? Interesting to contrast this with the comments made in the SS2013 forum about providing support for the struggling clubs like Penrith. If he lives up to the hype it's unlikely he'll be seen much at club level, even assuming he has any interest in playing...

    Shute Shield 2013

I'd suggest there are a variety of reasons, especially the distance (and cost) to travel for training and playing if you (and your mates) don't live in the area. A lot of players also don't want to play for a club that regularly gets beaten and has very little chance of making the playoffs.

Makes me wonder who else is hiding under a pseudonym on this forum and who really knows what's going on and could end all the speculation and rumours by "coming out"! Well done Glen (assuming it is really you)! I must admit that I'm always bemused by the level of secrecy and lack of...

    Shute Shield 2013 Transfers

Simon Piodevin's biography was titled "For Love not Money", but the rugby world has changed since it was written in1992: something to do with professionalism and players realising they can make a quid from the game if they're good enough!

I suggest the ARU sees the NRL and private schools as being at least as important as sources of players as the junior clubs, much to my frustration.

Sorry, I know this is off topic but it's too amazing not to share: http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-union/union-news/tahs-apologise-to-members-over-cap-clanger-20130111-2cjv7.html

    Shute Shield 2013

I still have a concern about whether there would be any interest in a competition that doesn't tap into the clubs' tribal support base. If memory serves me correct there was an end-of-season comp between NSW, QLD and ACT some years ago and that was pretty much ignored by the paying public...

Ryan, my understanding is that Randwick's annual budget is closer to $1m and the financial problems are mainly with the licenced club. We've been told that the football club has in fact lent money to the licenced club. Having said that, Wade Kelly claims that no players will be paid at Randwick...

Ever thought of a career in journalism? Very entertaining, but also very true.....and let's not forget the impact of global warming on the polar bears! I submitted a post earlier in the year (after spending 6 months last year working in NZ) in which I presented a similar argument ie that it...

Knuckles, I assume the benchmark club you're referring to is Sydney Uni. If so, let me ask you this: If all Shute Shield teams were at the same level as Uni would the Shute Shield then provide the holy grail 3rd tier competition (in Sydney at least) that everyone dreams of?

Maxwell did have an excellent coaching record at the club prior to 2012 and I'd suggest most supporters saw his appointment as a positive move at the time.

I guess it depends on your criteria for measuring success. For a club with Randwick's record to only win 3 premierships since 2004 (ie 1 x 3rd grade and 2 x 4th grade) in spite of several GF appearances is not considered good enough. Although all grades except 1sts made the (8 team) playoffs...

We obviously also rely heavily on volunteers. My biggest concern is that the new broom doesn't piss off the volunteers!

    Shute Shield 2013

After 2012 Randwick needed a complete clean out. I suspect most of the criticism within the club is coming from those who have been in the same roles for many years and have lost out in the clean out. Like others, I agree the jury is still out on whether Stallion Rugby is the answer, but at...

See below from Wikipedia: Elsom was educated at St. Joseph's Nudgee College in Brisbane where he was captain of their rugby union side; he went on to make the Australian Schoolboys side. He was a fast, agile forward for a young man of his size. He was nearly 100 kg when he finished in the...
