Pre Season '16: Stormers vs Jaguares

It wouldn't surprise me if they rotate their players a fair bit. It'll be tough for any team to beat them in Argentina, especially if they play their top team in every game at home. They can reduce the effect of the travel schedule somewhat by rotating their squad when playing away. The biggest...

Pre Season '16: Stormers vs Jaguares

Btw, I'm not saying I don't think the Jaguars will do well. I think they'll make the finals and will be contenders to win the title. I just disagree with people that seem to say they should be head and shoulders above every team in the comp. There's not a huge gulf in class between say the...

Pre Season '16: Stormers vs Jaguares

In 2013 the Blues came 10th in Super Rugby. With a young team missing 8 top line players (including 6 in the All Blacks squad) they lost 38-15 to France. They lost a couple of games by similar scores during the season with their best team. I think this supports my argument if anything. How'd...

Pre Season '16: Stormers vs Jaguares

I think people overrate the difference between national teams and top club/franchise teams. When you add in home ground advantage (especially when you're talking about traveling between continents) I don't think it's that big a surprise. Just look at the British and Irish Lions tours. The Lions...

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

The 9's still has the 10m defensive line which means the same tactic of one out runners is the most effective and risk-free tactic to make ground. I think 9's would be better with say a 5m rule as then the teams would have to use the ball a lot more. That or a reduced tackle count. I think the...

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

The 9's is also not played by specialist players. They're all guys preparing for a season of regular rugby league who maybe practice 9's specific strategies for a week or two. That, and the fact there's only a 30% difference in numbers of players compared to normal rugby league makes it very...

World Rugby Sevens Caravan coming to Sydney

I think they're going to kill the event like the Wellington fun police have done there. The Saturday in London has been sold out for the last 2 or 3 years after a steady build up in support before that (and starting from a pretty low base). I was there in 2014 and it was great. If the pressure...

    S18 on its way

Agustin Pichot has previously mentioned the possibility of a Montevideo based franchise with strong Argentinian presence/support. It's a fairly short ferry trip away from Buenos Aires so there could be a nice rivalry between such a team and the Jaguares. I'd imagine if this was to happen...

    S18 on its way

The Argentinian Union didn't want a 2nd team. Primarily for financial reasons I believe. If the Jaguars are successful on and off the field then I'm sure we'll see a 2nd team sooner than later.

I also think it has the potential to be a great long term event in Sydney. It's more likely to draw in non-rugby fans than other rugby events as people learn it's a great day out. Hopefully they don't hike up ticket prices in future because of this initial success - the events success requires a...

    Rugby News from unexpected places

Here's a prediction for you guys: The African qualifier for the 2019 world cup will be Algeria. Their Federation was recently established and in their first official test match they beat Tunisia 16-6. Don't think they have full WR (World Rugby) membership yet, but they should get it soon and when they do...

    Waratahs 2016

On the other hand the depth of their squad means they can probably rest and rotate players more often than other teams. Their 2nd XV would be a fair bit stronger than every other teams 2nd XV IMO.

    Rugby News from unexpected places

I think it's a step towards further Super Rugby expansion within Asia. Korea in particular will hopefully be very jealous of Japan's success and try to replicate it.

    S18 on its way

I agree that format would make more sense WCR. If this year's format doesn't work out too well it's the most obvious one to switch to. Though Jaguares games in New Zealand would have to kick off at lunch time to give fans in Argentina a chance to watch them play at a reasonable time.

Isles ran 10.13 with wind assistance. I think 20 and 40m speed is probably more relevant to be honest and Isles is exceptionally quick over the shorter distances. I read somewhere that he's faster than Bolt over 20 and that he holds the 40 yard dash record at the NFL combine. He also seems to...

Yeah and she dominates! A lot of the women's team are from other backgrounds. It's not as needed in men's given the greater base of male rugby players, but in this one specific area - speed, we do seem to be lacking.

    Rugby 7s general chat

Maybe we should follow the example of the US and try and convert some actual sprinters into sevens players. There's obviously not enough time before Rio to do this, but maybe by 2020 we could have a couple of options if we made it a focus. Almost every Australian sprinter would have a better...

Cummins will be great for PR purposes - not convinced he'll have as much of an impact on the field, but hope he goes well.
